Kill the bastards!

Been getting a fair few messages of support from readers and I thank them. Keep the evemails coming and no, my consideration in joining Black-Flag in no way will stop me writing this blog; nor will my impartiality be impaired. I still need time to sort things out but Black-Flag is a new corp with pirates I like to yar with and killing and robbing and ransoming people is much more fun with others of the same mindset. We're pirates after all!

Moving round Heimatar and Metropolis I feel like there are more pirates around not less and about 50% of the fights are with other pirates. Some are new to the area, others are old hands. Nonetheless, this is about territory and loot and pirates will fight hard to maintain dominance. Currently, M34N corp are the dominant pirate corporation with Havoc Inc a continuous presence. BLACK-FLAG is a new upcoming pirate corporation with ambitious aims and enough blood thirsty pirates to make it a reality.

The Bastards are a pirate group that I've only bumped into a couple of times but we found out that they were camping a gate in Brin and we wondered whether pickings were thin for them that day - and maybe we can improve things for them?

We sent in a rifter first, for intel and the brave frigate pilot jumped in - meanwhile a mixed gang of us held station on the other side of the gate. The rifter pilot reported back, nervously as his cloaking timer was counting down.

"We have a drake, a harbringer, er and two 'canes and a punisher!"
"We need names to ships. Names to ships!" Said Viper Sam, the night's nominated FC. A few more seconds ticked by and we could only imagine what would be happening now.
"Lewis in harby, er Mahn in drake. Shit!" The comms went off and we came close to jumping. "Hold gate jump! Hold!" barked Viper Sam. Some of the others were eager to jump in and assist but we held. The rifter pilot reported back to us.
"They're firing on me and am taking damage - am running. They're agressed. They're all agressed." Reported our scout.

Decision made.

"Jump!"

We all jumped and stayed cloaked and waited for primary to be called. Viper wanted the harbringer to be primary but it was too far from the gate. Only the drake and punisher was close enough for me and one other. The punisher was the only one that was not blinking red too. "Harbringer is primary, drake secondary" I said to the rest of the fleet - jumping in front of our FC. Ach - we're pirates not an organised navy!

As the ships decloaked, the comms came alive.

"Point on Drake!"
"Locking 'cane number one - need to mwd to it."
"Cane two is aliging. Get points on it!"
"Harby is bugging out."
"Point on Drake. Firing."

I locked the enemy drake and hit with my full rack of 425mm II ACs, spitting out EMP shells and knocking the famed shields down in quick succession. Grunanca in his sleipnir with engines roaring, closed the distance and unloaded hell onto the drake as well. The other two canes and harbringer had aligned and warped out. We didn't have enough tacklers with us this time round and had to let the other marks go. Pity.

The drake popped and we all attempted to lock the pod, however it insta-warped.

Risking the sentry guns - I locked and blasted the punisher as well; my blood lust well and truly raised. The sentry guns started to hit me and Redbad as no-one else in our fleet was firing on the punisher. No matter, tough as it was - the plucky little frigate popped.

Had to log and leave the rest of the fleet to complete their sweep.

Yaarr..

So who was trying to cyno into Auren then?

A nice day today but significantly, I took out two kestrels that were creating cynosural fields. The first one popped but only after a Moros class dreadnaught had appeared while the second one, I killed within ten seconds of the cyno-field registering on the scanner and overview. There must be a pissed off capital ship pilot out there. Auren is a quiet place, relatively speaking but not safe enough.

It dropped a cyno-generator and a cargo hold of ozone while the pilot was podded and added to my collection of discarded protein. A minute later, a rifter appeared in local and I thought - why not? Chasing him down was fun but he could get into warp pretty damn quick. When I finally caught up with him after landing four times too far in as many occasions! He gave me these immortal lines after I asked for a 500K ransom:

>> FUCK YOU! FUCK YOU FROM RUSSIA!!!!

He dropped ok loot for a rifter and after my flag had ended I traveled some more. In Gultratren, I jumped in and was not too surprised to see lots and lots of mindless haulers; poor pod pilots controlled by this one mastermind it would seem. My scanner gave a little bleep. It was a contact and not a shuttle or an industrial.

Looking closer, I saw it was OriasV! Yes, an old adversary who went from CEO to -10.0 pirate and now with a new corp and working his sec status up, it would seem. I tracked his movements on the scanner and locked on. My heart thumping hard as I anticipated another kill. OriasV was in a wolf, identical class as mine so it would be most interesting in finding out who pops first. He was also still a blinkie so it mattered little about a timer. My warp engines engaged and away it went, the distance to the destination counting down rapidly. With another wolf, suitably configured, it will be an armour tanker so i needed to switch to some armour-piercing rounds as soon as his shields went. Some hail and phased plasma would do it I think.

My wolf came out of warp and I saw OriasV with his ship blinking red in my overview. Beautiful I thought. Just beautiful. My 150mm T2 opened up and soon reduced OriasV into dust. It was only then that I noticed a blinking, minimised conversation window.

I opened up the small message packet and it was OriasV offering surrender terms. SHITE. I missed his conversation and it appears that the offer to accept the conversation never came up; so I didn't see it. The red-mist of combat clouds and hides everything. Then I realised that OriasV was in my address book.

Oh well.

His loot was ok and yes, I pod-killed him too.

Coming back into my home area, I was asked by one of the newly minted BL4CK FL4G players to help him. He was in his punisher and it was Mochur. There was a harpy around, piloted by SNURA who I was chasing for a while but never caught. It appeared that he was hunting Mochur which in turn meant that I was now hunting him.

After a few minutes of setting up in position, I was summoned by Mochur - already in mid-warp; I discovered that the harpy had pounced on Mochur and was busy smashing into him. Speed was of the essence and I warped to my gang-mate as quickly as possible. Arriving, i was dismayed to see that I had landed outside of the 20KM range and had to hit the afterburner to close the distance. This I did and locked onto the harpy, it was close to Mochur's punisher so it was a blaster harpy; not the usual run-of-the-mill; missile and railgun jobs. Most likely it would be T2 fitted with lethal void-class ammunition. Mochur's punisher managed to tank for a few seconds longer before it exploded. I was in lock range and opened up with the x4 200mm and x1 rocket launcher. A salvo that hit the harpy full on, knocking it's shields down to 50% in the first burst. However, the harpy was tough and like all Caldari ships, had a super-efficient shield boosting system and was soon running at 75% shield. I had to be quick and get the damage to bleed into it's comparatively thin armour.

"Just popped." Said Mochur in our Independence channel chat and I was alone to avenge my gang mate. Mochur got his pod out but wished me luck.

My T2 auto-canons had a high rate of fire and the extra gyrostabiliser that I had installed allowed my wolf to kick out an extra 15% extra in terms of damage and rate of fire. However, even without these mods, the wolf was more than enough and soon the Harpy was on fire as it's hull was breached in numerous places. Its precious fuel and life support systems leaking out. Then it burst. The pilot had a big bounty on him and I tried to clamp onto it but experience and a bit of luck was on his side and he got away.

The loot was good and would pay for several new Punishers for Mochur.

After a quick change over, Mochur was back out in his new punisher and once more was engaged by yet another Harpy class assault frigate. What was it with this punisher? This one however, hit a lot harder than the last one and Mochur's punisher soon disappeared in a ball of flame, just as I arrived and got a precious point on the new Harpy.

"That ship hits a lot harder than the previous Harpy. Watch out Flash!" Warned Mochur, his pod now warping away. I locked horns with the second harpy and by God this Caldari AF could hit hard. I lost all my shields and some armour before I had the sense to kick the armour repairer to life. However, my Wolf was no slouch either and had torn a sizeable chunk out of the shields, I could imagine his capacitor struggling to feed the shield boosters thirst as it bled of the excessive kinetic energy imparted by my auto-canon shells.

However, the power of the wolf is in hitting harder than most other frigate-class ships and let armour be damned. This tilted the balance to me, even though I was tanking it mattered not and soon the Harpy was blowing out fire and atmosphere. It was dying but the pod pilot bravely held on and fought.

Hats off to him.

As his ship blew, the pod-pilot's capsule instantly warped out leaving his wreck and his crew's rescue launches in space.

Not a bad night. Nice loot too for me and Mochur to share.

Love them isk!

25 May 2007

Dampners - I love 'em even if they're used on me.

A bad couple of week for me. Been going out as a tackler and each time, have had my rifter or punisher shredded from underneath me. Got podded twice too.

The most frustrating fight was when I tangled with a celestis - it had dampners, drones and missiles and the pilot played with me. Not only was I webbed but my targeting range had dropped to about 4k....which I could never do due to my webbed frigate running a less than 10 meters per second. I was also scrambled and got leisurely taken apart by the celestis pilot through his missiles and drones. More recently, I ran right into a combined ADF and Red Squad gate camp that shredded my stabber in under three seconds. Got podded also into the bargain so someone is 1 million isk richer.

However, one must never give up and in a short period, in order to recover my wits and some isk I went on a rampage and knocked out a thrasher, three rifters and a caracal.

The caracal pilot's response to my ransom demand of a mere 5 million was:

> FUCK OFF

Oh well. He popped under the 200mm Autocanons and his flash frozen corpse now joins all the other meat icicles I have in my collection. I always love challenges though and never back down from a potential good fight.

So the other day, I was in my punisher - the last of the current batch and configured along the lines of the infamous 'bleeder' setups. I moved from system to system hunting for appropriate targets. A decent pirate never stays in one place for too long.

A Minmatar hurricane-class battle cruiser appeared on my scanner but then disappeared just as quick. Local had five pilots, two I recognised. The other three must be one of the hurricane pilots. The 'cane was also towards one of the three gates. God, I hate it when this happens!

I quickly hit the warp engines and jumped towards the first gate. Nothing.

The 'cane was back on scanner and I chanced the second of the gates. I arrived and still nothing and the 'cane had gone. I lost track of who might be the potential pilot as two had left and four more had come in. At least whoever it was had gone through the third (and typically) the last gate. Without hesitating I jumped to the other gate and went on through, gate command firing up the massive jump engines and letting me zip across light years in the blink of an eye.

Bursting from space, I spotted nothing but the 'cane was on scan...then disappeared. Local had not gone down at this moment so the 'cane was in-system and outside my range. There were no stations for it to dock. This system had five gates in it and I had the scanner at 360 degrees so not a chance to get an guess a location but exercising a bit of logic (who said pirates can't think?) I deduced that due to the range of the scanner and the no change in the population count in local count, he was near one of two gates over 14AU away.

Guessing I jumped to the more populous one. I set the scanner to 180 degrees and pinged ahead and got a contact: the hurricane.

The gate had already stopped firing when I arrived as the hurricane had disappeared. Surely it had jumped? I arrived only for me to catch the disappearing engines signature of the battlecruiser! He was heading towards one of three gates, all in-line with each other. So I gave chase. This went on for another ten minutes with some false leads but I was never more than two jumps behind.

I managed to catch up just as the target 'cane had jumped. It was an exciting chase, though I doubt the hurricane pilot knew that I was on his tail in a punisher. Not wishing to waste more time, I requested a gate activation for me and was quickly processed; arriving at the next system. My eyes widened as I finally saw the target. The hurricane-class battle cruiser is a beautiful ship, I have one in space-dock at the moment and getting some rigs installed. This beautiful killing machine was awesome in it's destructive powers.

Pity that I was planning to kill it in my punisher.

The hurricane pilot was moving away under speed from the gates and it was activating it's shield boosters. So this gave me the first clue: a shield boosting hurricane would be far easier to take then an armour tanking one. Also, it would have one less slot for a webber - which would be the death of me. The pilot was also only three-months out of pod school so this would be to my advantage. However, the battle cruiser was still under the protection of the sentry guns and I was not going to risk a long fight with a battle cruiser as well as getting pummeled by automated sentry guns.

The hurricane pilot also did not target me let alone fire on me so I left and warped to a safe spot and waited. There was no way he would stay near the gate. Eventually, he would leave for a belt or planet or the system entirely. Doubtful he was running a mission for an agent either.

I kept an eye on the scanner and after ten minutes (God, what was he doing?) - he moved and I tried to track him. He had moved off scan and a quick flick through the scanner and I realised he could be at one star gate or the IX cluster. I choose the cluster and went to there ready to double-back if there was a mistake but mid-way through the warp - the distinctive hurricane signature appeared on scan. My heart started to beat faster as I was slowly closing down on him.

My scan spot now told me he was in one of two places - the IX-1 belt or the planet IX itself. I scanned for wrecks but found nothing but decided to try the belt anyway. I landed and was promptly targeted by some irritated Angel cruisers. The 'cane was still on scan and was either in a safe spot or the planet IX itself.

I swung the punisher around and pushed towards the looming presence of the planet. As I exited warp, there was a slight lag as the interface was loading up. A good sign that it had detected a ship and was updating the view.

I think I have him.

Coming out of warp I landed a mere 5km from the hulking presence of the battle cruiser. There was a 'yaaarr' from my frigate crew and it was all hands to battle stations. On came the warp scrambler and the small nosferatu. I waited a few seconds for any drones to appear as re-acquiring targets alway slowed things down.

Several seconds went by and nothing, no drones. No Nos either. Could I be so lucky?

I opened up with the x3 200mm auto cannons and the EMP shells streaked out and hammered into the considerable shields of the hurricane. The hurricane replied with the distinctive recoil of 650mm howitzers. Oh yes, this battle cruiser was built for range and had nothing for small stuff. Amazingly, no webber either.

I set the 0rbit for 2km and settled in. Slowly, slowly chewing his shields down - he was furiously boosting his shields and even with a capacitor booster - it could not go on forever. I stayed around him for over 5 minutes, firing at him before his shields bled out and I was into his armour. I was increasingly nervous however as the longer the attack, the greater the likelihood that there would be 'guests' appearing.

The hurricane's armour now was slowly being chipped off, a meter at a time and I checked to make sure I had enough emp shells - the inventory informed me that I had over 3500 rounds left. Should be enough I hoped.

When his armour was down to 50%, it crepted back up. An armour and shield tanking ship?

I opened up convo with the pilot and asked for a 15 million ransom and all that came back was a polite 'No'. He either didn't have the money, wasn't inclined to give it to me or thought he could survive it.

Then something odd happened. A can appeared next to the hurricane. I quickly opened up and saw over 100 scan probes and two, shivering exotic dancers. Bemused I went in closer (having drifted too far) when the can disappeared. Shocked, I rechecked my overview setting and it confirmed my suspicions. The can was destroyed.

Another can appeared, it was filled with salvaged stuff and ammo. It too popped.

The hurricane pilot realising his predicament had opted to deny me any chance of salvaging his cargo and was destroying it!

Damn it. All that isk.

However, I had to admit that it was a nice move and congratulated him on his move. I presented him with my ransom demands once more and this time he replied that he had only 460,000 isk left. One should never sink all your funds into one ship. Only fly what you can not afford to lose. This would be an expensive lesson for the rookie Hurricane pilot.

The armour was now stripped off from the once-mighty hurricane; it was on fire. I presented a new ransom demand to the pilot: eject from the ship to save yourself from being podded. He merely laughed and continued to destroy his cargo.

The hurricane was listing portside, my last salvo had knocked out it's internal gyroscope and it began to spin a little. It was a pity to destroy such a wonderful ship and I let it's stricken crew to leave. The captain, however had to be caught and taught a painful lesson.

The ship finally exploded, my ship rocking slightly in the expanding debris field. I quickly snagged the Captain's pod.

I congratulated on his cargo-destroying move and killed him before he could reply.

Feeling a bit refreshed I waited out for my flag to expire and pondered on the pilot's reluctance to comply. It is possible that the reputation of pirates as being generally untrustworthy meant that he had nothing to gain by paying the ransom or leaving the ship.

Oh well, the loss of the hurricane is a lot of isk to lose.

I ended the day with a successful ransom however: Jubes's T2 -kitted rifter-class frigate was destroyed in the nearby Angel complex and I managed to get a 2.5million isk ransom out of him. He came back for his wreck five minutes later, in yet another T2-kitted rifter and I destroyed him again but failed to snag the pod. I warp scrambled his wreck instead and he got away.

All in all, it is a good day to be a pirate.

Yarrr.

Back in Eifer and rocking and rolling

Getting back to my current system was hard - I was too distracted with targets of opportunity but after a long journey I was finally home. My new crew were joined by those I lost when the stabber was blown up so here's me hoping to become even more deadly.

A quick trip into Eifer and I spotted a 4 month old pilot in a thrasher - amongst all the usual big hitters. It smelt like a trap but who wants to live forever? I quickly and efficiently scanned him down. Setting battlestations for the ship I hit the jump drive and dove straight in. I landed too short for the warp disruptor and I commanded the rifter to make all speed to the target. The thrasher was sniffing around some old wrecks and apparently, had not yet spotted me.

Good I thought, keep your eye on the wreck and not on your scanner. Since local was so busy, it probably masked my presence somewhat. Impatiently, I waited until I was almost in range and then cycled up the guns and let the unfortunate thrasher have the full load. The rifter is such a fine ship - it can be one of the few frigates able to perform a decent 'alpha-strike'. The thrasher was punched sideways by the force of my 150mm autocannons and single rocket launcher.

The pilot finally managed to acquire me and hit me with 200mm auto-cannons that tore into my shields. One of a few thrashers fitted with fast-tracking auto-cannons? I might be in trouble now as I was banking on yet another artillery fitted destroyer. It also had missile launchers and the flameburst missiles rocked my rifter.

Trusting to the extra shields that I had installed, I pressed on with the attack, the rifter weaving in and out in order to confuse the targeting computers on the thrasher. However, there was little chance of my being able to tank any damage for any length of time so I had to kill the thrasher and hope no-one came in during the middle of the fight!

The thrasher had lost the shields now and I was breaking his armour down into small chunks - I was at around 35% shield and it wasn't dipping.

The thrasher was mine - I love the feeling when you know you have the victory in your grasp.

With a delightful explosion - the destroyer disappeared in a flash of expanding debris and flash-frozen gases. I locked the pod and popped the pilot. There were too many in local for me to have an extended conversation with a pissed-off pilot.

Later on in the evening - Eifer and Gusandall was getting hot. We had ADF, FFAT and others in and around the system. Just how I like it. Proculus (CEO of Fortes Fortuna Adiuvat Corp) was zipping in the system in a Stabber fleet issue while ADF were present in various ships with a scan-probing helios in tow to make safe spots far from being safe.

Zombiee was present and Lucius so, after the last successful gang up - we did it again. Lucius was especially keen to take on and kill DELT4 (a pilot from FFAT) as was I. I have nothing against Proculus but he has some idiot pilots under his command.

So a game of cat and mouse ensued between all the parties. No-one was around the belts but in safe-spots but with ADF scanning, these would not be safe for long unless I continued to move around safe spots and made more.

Proculus actually lost the stabber according to Lucius who engaged him a number of times that night. According to Luc, the stabber was a poor damage dealer. No matter, Proculus was in a rupture and a quick scan of local revealed at least ten ships of various classes.

Zombiee was now in local too in his brutix so I opted to act as bait.

I warped to the top belt and sat there - didn't have to wait long; a rupture appeared 3km from me and locked and fired in one efficient move. It was Proculus. I wasn't too bothered who it was to be honest and while Proculus is neutral to me, as soon as I get fired upon; I will fire back and attempt to pod the pilot.

However, a second rupture came in too.

Ah - problems.

My punisher was holding up but the drones, auto-cannon and missiles was taking it's toil. I called in Zombiee already but he hadn't appeared next to me yet. All I got from Zombiee was 'fack'. That did not sound too good.

I was into 50% armour and tanking but I was not on top of the damage, I was targeting and popping the drones around me but the other ordnance were taking chunks out of me. I was down to 25% armour when Zombiee finally said: 'On my way'.

I feared that it was too late so I made sure that the last thing I would do was to maintain a disruptor on Proculus before the punisher was destroyed. When my ship went pop, I insta-warped just as Zombiee came in. I hoped he would have the chance to lock Proculus and who ever else was in the belt. Finally discovered that the other rupture was Captained by Fox20. So far, this chap and his corp were neutral to mine.

No matter; my job was to tackle and I hoped I did a good enough job.

Zombiee gleefully told me that Proculus was down a minute later. He apologised for not warping in faster - instead of 'warping to member' he 'kicked' himself from the gang!

Fox20 was also firing on Proculus and between Fox's Rupture and Zombiee's Brutix - Proculus was down. Concord recorded it all for our posterity:

I warped back to Gusandall just as I heard that Zombiee was being ambushed by a bunch of ADF pilots (I think). Damnnit, if I survived long enough - I could have helped him. I only managed to grab a few snatches of conversation; combat usually results in a lot of garbled message traffic but Zombiee was down.

Lucius had flown back at speed to help us out. Eifer and all the surrounding areas was hot with pissed off pilots and itchy trigger fingers so plenty of loot and plunder opportunities.

I was back into another punisher and was taking a detour to Ingunn to meet up with Lucius (who had already located prey and was also tracking him) when I stopped at the Ingunn entry gate in Sotrenzur. I was just pausing to fire off a message to Zombiee when a rifter (yellow flagged) came screaming in from the Gusandall direction. The pilot was 'Cumbersnatch' - someone who I tangled six months back (but more recently, two weeks ago) and whom I have had quite civil dealings with. He was in a rifter once more. My own intelligence had informed me that he had lost at least one Wolf-class assault frigate lately.

His rifter hit an intercept course and buzzed close to me. Wondering what he was up to, I was about to message him when my own tactical computer screamed out that it had detected a targeting lock. Shit, Cumbersnatch had locked me and immediately after, my punisher was buffeted as his shells smacked into the shields.

'Battlestations!'

OK, civil or not - he was now going to die.

I hit back as hard as I could with the punisher. The bleeder setup is NOT designed for frigate 1 v 1 but I had to try. He had the advantage of speed while I had a tank. We jostled around the gate - with the sentry guns silent and brooding. Lucius jumped through and informed me that he was going to help but had to align. Cumbersnatch was not nasty enough to have a KOS on him and had not caused any aggravation against Lucius. Any hostile action by Lucius would result in the gate guns opening up on him.

That would be to his detriment one would assume!

The gates whirled into action as it detected an illegal weapons discharge by Lucius's rupture just as he aligned and warped to safety. By this time, Cumbersnatch was in trouble and his hull was on fire with his vented atmosphere ignited by the exploding munitions.

The rifter, taking too much damage exploded.

Grinning, I had to pod him even if it meant possible destruction by the sentry guns. Locking the pod and then opening fire must have surprised Cumbersnatch - who would be mad enough to do this in a frigate directly under the sentry guns in 0.4 space?

The rules governing the possibility of sentry gun fire is quite complex but one thing is clear. A pod kill of anyone not a pirate would result in an immediate response from station and sentry gun fire as well as Concord inside empire space.

So I fired at the pod. And missed.

SHIT.

The sentry guns then opened up on me and the tactical computer protested at the damage. I realised that I had drifted too far from the pod and was now 11km.......which meant that if Cumbersnatch had his wits about him - he could warp. As the sentry gunfire intensified, I turned the ship around and tried to get close. I was already down to armour from the previous fight and the armour repairer was working as fast as it could. I locked the pod again and hit the guns once more. The sentry guns pummeled the frigate. I was tanking them but doing a bad job.
The emp shells hit Cumbersnatch's pod but failed to completely destroy it.

SHIT.

Why are they so tough now?

Already I was down to 10% armour and I had to leave. I squeezed off one final shot and was rewarded with a squish sound as I finally sent Cumbersnatch back to the cloning vats. I didn't have time to savour the victory as I warped to a safe spot and checked the combat logs.

Once my flag had expired I was contacted by Lucius - he had snagged a prophecy in Hrondredir so with a whoop I jumped next door and landed into raging combat between the harby and Lucius' rupture.

I helped out in my own way but with my fast locking, it was expected that I would snag the pod....which I did.

Hurricane hunting

The hunting around my Eifer has been erratic: some periods it has been good while other periods - the pickings have been none existent. My stabber was in space dock getting a refit so I was back into the punisher - increasingly turning into my main pirating frigate, even though I had five, recent good kills in my rifter. I feel safer in the punisher as I can tackle targets of the cruiser class more easily then the wonderful rifter. Certainly, I am more resistant to NOS in the Amarr frigate than our very Minmater rifter. As I was contemplating the ship types; a new face appeared in local. I quickly scanned the Concord bio and discovered that he was a relative newcomer. I quickly undocked and hit the scanner. He disappeared from the local com-net but I think I managed to get enough of scan signature to ascertain that it was a Hurricane-class battlecruiser.

Unsure of which gate he went through and with nothing else interesting in local; I zipped across to the primary gate and activated it. Nothing. The next two systems revealed nothing; unless the pilot had decided to move on. The fourth gate activation and I was successful. The Hurricane pilot was present and local was empty. The pilot was N***** and was three months out of Republic Military School...and already flying a Hurricane?

Going to be interesting as I have had a decent track record engaging Hurricanes. Hopefully, Neraven al'Brindihad fitted his ship with no webbers or nos.

I jumped to my scan spot and willed the scanner to send out it's electronic feelers. The returns came back to me and within seconds I had narrowed him down to a cluster of three belts. This is where it gets tricky: I didn't want him to jump and land short of him since most pilot ratting in a belt tend to move quite far from a warp in point. So I decided to wait: the longer I waited, the greater the chance that he would be in the last belt. Most ratters work sequentially from top belt down. He had a one minute start on me and probably had already finished the top belt. Most likely, he was in the second belt. I could have warped to the cluster's planet but decided this was a bit more challenging. After another minute, I willed the jump drives to cycle up and I warped towards the belt.

The familiar excitement was there and I don't think it will ever get away from me. The anticipation as you see the warp tunnel warp itself around your ship, the constant pinging of the scanner ahead of you and the hard return of a target. The frigate popped out of warp in a blaze of colour, the overview revealed the wonderful icon of a ship (square brackets FTW!!!) and as always with Battlecruisers, I was struck by it's size and presence. The frigate was a mere 6km away so on came the warp scrambler and I hit the afterburner to push me close to the 2000m orbit range. With two points on him, am hoping it would be enough to keep him there. My heart was beating fast now and the Hurricane pilot had already locked me. Deciding to be cheeky, I started a conversation with him:

Me: Hello.
Neraven al'Brindi: What can I do for you?
Me: You can pay me the princely sum of 12 million isk to let you go.
Neraven al'Brindi: No, I would rather you leave.
Neraven al'Brindi: And I will not pay.
Me: You sure?

At this point, Neraven al'Brindihad launched three light drones. Only three? Good - meant that he either lacked the full drone skills or he had lost some in previous engagement. No matter what the reason, three light drones I can take out.

Neraven al'Brindi: We shall see.

At this point, Neraven al'Brindisent his drones screaming my way as well as a salvo of light missiles. My shields disappeared pretty quickly as he scored some decent hits. Maybe not a noob after all! His drones proceeded to tear into the shields and within seconds they were gnawing at my armour. Shit! I toggled the armour repper on but it would take a few precious seconds to warm up. It was a tricky moment as I I targeted and sent shell after shell against the drones; popping each one. I was down to 25% - some armour tanker I am huh? Chances are he probably didn't notice the loss of his drones but now, with the threat neutralised - I had him.

My small nosferatu nibbled at his cap but I was scoring hit after hit. Occasionally, a light missiles salvo came screaming in but I was on top of it.

Neraven al'Brindi: what was the ransom again? 1.2 million

Cheeky git.

Me: No, 12 million isk.
Neraven al'Brindi: I dont have that.
Me: pity for you then!

Throughout this time, his shields were slowly going down but I was low on isk. Something had to give.

Neraven al'Brindi: Please: 6 million isk
Me: 7 million isk now or I close this conversation.
Neraven al'Brindi: Ceasefire?
Me: You pay first.

Then the conversation went silent for at least five minutes as I finally cracked the hurricane's shields and got into his armour. It was down to 52% before the conversation picked up once more:

Neraven al'Brindi: Ceasefire?
Me: NO. You pay me first, then I stop firing.
Neraven al'Brindi: Ceasefire. Payed.

I checked the accounts and there was no extra isk. I continued to fire and his armour dipped down to 45% - I checked my ammo levels and the weapon-chief informed me that we had over 4000 EMP shells left. That was plenty.

Neraven al'Brindi: Stop.
Me: Pay ME.
Neraven al'Brindi: OK, payed.

Finally, my account was credited with an extra 7million isk. I disengaged and zipped off to a safe spot. I fired off a warning to Neraven al'Brindito leave the system as there were bound to be more pirates around.

Not the biggest of ransoms but I needed some isk for a vexor that I have an eye on.

A good start to the day.

27 Feb 2007

Killing my first Geddon.

Determined to get more kills - I went back to Gusandall to see what was flying around. Oddly, no Blackfleet or MeanCorp or anyone for that matter. I have had some success in a the Todifrauan system in Metropolis. Its the base for many corps and many appear to mine there. Also, the place is hot with Angels so there are plenty of hunters there.

Lucius and I spent some time scanning and seeking out targets; as there were plenty and what looked like a major mining operation. We saw covetors and retrievers all guarded by Dominix, Scorpion and Caracal class ships. A bit tough for two frigates.

However, there were still plenty of ships around and we spotted a stabber and an armageddon that were working together in the belts around the VI cluster. Sensing an opportunity we split up and tried to pin them down. The primary target would be the stabber then the armageddon. We doubted the 'geddon would be able to track us unless it had NOS, SmartBombs and drones. The search for them was fun as both Lucius and I landed 100KM+ away from the pair a total of five times. It was clear to us that they knew were were around. However, we took advantage of a mistake they made: they passed a secured can and we bookmarked the can and warped back to it a suitable distance, screaming in and landing within 10km of the pair. Snarling, Lucius and I hurled our ships closer and tried to scramble the stabber - amazingly it warped off before we got close enough. Looks like both Lucius and I had 7.5km scramblers. I normally fly with a 20km disruptor but not this time.

We engaged the armageddon instead, the golden hulk gleaming and reflecting the system's red giant sun dully. The Armageddon presented its broadside and unleashed the heavy pulse lasers. Ruby lances of light flashed by. The punisher's own collision avoidance system banked the ship to one side as it regarded the destructive energy lance as another ship.

With the private independence channel alive with chatter, Lucius and I co-ordinated our attack. Scramblers came on - all four points worth and completely locking the battleship down. We started firing our small sized weapons; compared to the large destructive lances - they were a mere spittle. However, they scored hit and after hit.

The battleship pilot realising the folly of using the large lasers went to his other option: drones. Sure enough, small blisters on the ship irished open and heavy berserker class drones slid out. Their eyes swivelling into position and locking on us.

"Drones, Lucius."
"I see them."

We quickly re-directed our fire towards the deadly war machines and proceeded to pop them. They were designed as sluggers and to go after slower cruisers and larger craft, not nimble frigates. The drones were duly popped and we returned our fire at the armageddon.

The stabber then warped back in and landed on top of me. Lucius and I quickly split our targets: Lucius would maintain lock on the armageddon while I would try and take out the stabber. I switched my scrambler towards the sleek Minmater cruiser and redirected the fire from the three 200mm ACs at him. The small nosferatu also came on to supplement my capacitor. The stabber captain desperately tried to track me but I was too fast, even for the feared stabber-class cruiser; well known as a deadly anti-frigate platform.

My EMP shells ate into his shield. His only effective hits were from his missile launcher and the occasionally hit from his medium autocannons. I tanked and avoided his fire but realised that I was drifting further and further away from Lucius and the Armageddon. I called out to Revivor to get his rifter down here pronto. The blue-skinned babe duly obliged and informed us that she was ten jumps away.

Meanwhile, the stabber fight was going badly for the cruiser captain - he was down to 50% armour but started to pull away from me. He had a micro-warpdrive and even in the fast punisher, I had trouble closing the distance. Once out of scramble range, he warped.

I then made my way back towards Lucius' fight - now over 80km away. I warped back out and in on Lucius and minutes later, the stabber came in again. Once again, I peeled off to take the stabber and once again, he warped off once he was down to 50% armour. It was an effective tactic preventing me from adding my firewpower to Lucius but Revivor was only 2 jumps away and would swing the battle our way.

The stabber didn't turn up the third time so i once again, locked myself into a 2000m orbit and switched on the 200mm ACs. The damage readout on the armageddon was showing 80% armour and falling slowly. Revivor screamed in and added her firewpower to mine and Lucius. The armageddon captain must have been horrified at this.

Slowly, but surely the mighty armour of the Armageddon-class battleship was being drilled with thousands of ragged holes from our small projectiles. Atmosphere now venting out into space and fires burning in various places. Another three minutes and the armour was all but gone - most of it spinning off into space, burning and molten. Already, the crew was abandoning the ship, life pods as thick as rain flying away from the doomed ship.

We wanted the Captain.

The hull creaked and groaned and finally split after a final salvo. The Captain's pod appeared and it is only fitting that the Captain goes down with his ship. The concentrated fire of nine 200mm ACs blew the adamantium shell of the capsule to pieces.

My first ever Battleship kill.

The stabber never returned.

There were cheers from our own crews and we congratulated each other on a fine job. The wreckage and loot was disappointing but the thrill of the kill was all. We flew to a nearby planet to re-group.

While the cheering had not even died - a stabber came into view. We thought, 'its him again'. However, a closer examination revealed a different Captain and my readouts flashed out that it was Zelgris - who piloted a ferox and had taken out my third punisher a week ago.

We wanted revenge.

The stabber was hit hard by both me and Lucius. However, the stabber managed to escape just as Revivor arrived. It sped off but Lucius was hot on his heels having quite quickly figured out where Zelgris was heading too (warp to 0 to planet FTW!).

We chased the stabber for another two planets before locking him down and pummelling the stabber into scrap. The pod escaped and Zelgris disappeared from local. His pod was still there on the scanner.....logoffski???

23 Feb 2007

Hurricane Season!

I was bored and decided to check out the kill mails that I had accumulated over the last few months and it is over 200. A few were ship losses of my own and since I insist on flying frigates and with a 6million isk bounty; I do get a lot of attention.

More power to the bounty collectors I say, so long as they engage - I don't care. Also realised that while a T1-fitted rifter is a lot of fun, I do need something that can hit even harder so I am faced with either getting a Jaguar (drool) or fitting a new rifter with T2 kit.

Decided that I would do both but I also realised that I am using the punisher more and more; slowly I am refining the 'Bleeder' setup and understanding the ins and outs of this ship. Sure, it has been pwned a few times but it was always from ships with T2 guns or very fast firing ships. Need to be a bit smarter in using the tough little Amarr frigate.

I loaded up on ammo - opting for three-quarters EMP and one-quarter Phased Plasma and undocked into the vastness of space. The station slowly receeded as I increased the sub-light engines and pushed out into space. I check the local com-net and there were a few pilots. I took a chance and snapped on the scanner, just in case a few were around in the belts. After a minute or two - it was clear that the three local pilots (x1 battleship, x1 battle-cruiser and x1 frigate) were all in safe spots: deep areas of space away from any warpable celestial objects.

Sighing, I popped in the co-ordinates of the next system and fired up the warp engines. I have to admit, the Punisher has nice clean lines and makes a change from the Rifter. Of course, the deadly rusted Rifter is still my ship of choice but change is good. I arrived and recieved immediate clearance to jump into the next system.

Arriving in Eifer, I hit the scanner again - the local comnet was quite busy so potential for targets I thought. I hit the scanner and waited for the return. Finding nothing, I quickly hit the warp engines and arrived at my secondary scan spot. Sure enough, the scanner came back with solid returns. Narrowing the angle down, I spotted a Republic University pilot in a burst-class frigate. Not much of a challenge but I needed to warm up the guns.

I hit the warp engines and the frigate leapt into the warp. I could feel my heart start to beat faster as I neared the belt, adrenaline coursing through my body and feeling a touch-light headed. I hit the scanner mid-way to ensure that the target was still in front of me and yes, it was. The ship sensed my eagerness for the kill and hurled itself out of the warp tunnel and into normal space, thin plasma streams trailing off the ship's sleek golden frame.

The sweet, sweet overview return of a white cross made me grin with fierce joy. All hunters will know the feeling of excitement of seeing a target icon appear in the ships overview. I hit the afterburners as soon as the navi-computer was sorted out and closed the distance. The Burst class frigate was 25km away and I had a long-range 20km disruptor. I had to close the 5km gap before the pilot could get out.

23km and I hit the targetting computer - it cycled through it's lock very quickly. A long tone indicated a successful lock but the I was still 21km away. I prayed that the last km would be rewarded with a snared ship and not me chasing after plasma trails. The computer maintained its lock and the distance ticker read 18km and dropping.

On came the disruptor and he was mine - the burst-class frigate suddenly became aware of me and tried to pull away but I had the velocity and closed to within 9km and opened fire. The ship's shields flared brightly as my EMP shells spat out of the 200mm ACs. Soon I was chewing into his armour as the burst tried to fight back. The armour peeled off in glowing strips and the vulnerable and soft hull was exposed. The pilot was too young to have any money but his clone would be cheap. I quickly slammed two more shells into his hull and his pod ejected out. Calmly, I targetted the blinking pod and sent the Republic University back to his cloning vats.

A kill was a kill and I was warmed up.

Of course, the burst was a snack really I wanted more. I swept the area for more potential victims but they had all finally found a dark, deep hole to safely hide. If only I had a wing mate with scanner probes. Grumbling a bit I jumped through a number of gates after my criminal flag had expired.

One of my regular hunting buddies came back to the same area and we greeted each other. Lucius Cain is a pilot with SNIGGWAFFE but outside of corp operations, we fly with each other and other likely minded pilots; all frigate pilots and all looking to misbehave. We spotted for each other calling out targets in each system and assessing the likely success of a joint operation. He was in his trusty rifter while I still flew the punisher.

Lucius called out a hurricane-class battlecruiser had arrived into Gusandall so we decided that this would be a nice test of the two-frigate combo.

flashfresh > Phantom Sulker in 1-1
Lucius Cain > heh
flashfresh > he's moved
Lucius Cain > want to try him?
flashfresh > ofc
flashfresh > I always die to canes
Lucius Cain > Booyah :D
flashfresh > he's moved though
Lucius Cain > Try IV - 1
flashfresh > k
Lucius Cain > Warping

Lucius had tracked down and engaged the battlecruiser pilot and called me in.

flashfresh > laaagg
Lucius Cain > He's here
flashfresh > In warp
Lucius Cain > 20km away

I arrived within 10 seconds and landed a mere spitting distance away from the bulk of a hurricane battlecruiser. A rifter was in a tight orbit around the hurricane; there was a faint blue glow of an activated web around the battlecruiser - reducing it's velocity and transversal to a crawl. This made the beast easier to hit.

I hit the afterburners and pushed the punisher into a 2000m orbit and engaged the 200mm AC and the small nosferatu. The EMP projectiles screamed out and smashed and flared off the hurricane's shields.

My disruptor came on and with the nosferatu firmly engaged, I settled into destroying the hurricane's shields. Throughout this time, the Hurricane captain tried to fight back but he had the wrong weapons: too big to track small ships. He also lacked a nosferatu or even drones. However, his shields were ten times that of ours and I could only hope that the 6ooo rounds of EMP ammunition was enough.

His shields did go down however, as they could not last forever.

We knew we had him.

Soon the readouts were showing armour damage; I switched one of the 200mm ACs to phase plasma and continued to pummel the hurricane's armour - armour that was peeling off in white-hot stripes and spinning off into space. I could imagine the panic on board the ship as internal fires started to erupt and the klaxons blaring away at failed shield generators. No matter, I wanted the kill and to see what it was carrying.

The armour was soon gone, it was venting atmosphere and the hull's integrity was severly compromised. Still no word from the Captain but Lucius and I decided to ransom the pod as we both wanted a Hurricane kill to our names.

The Hurricane was in its death throes - it was still firing at us but it had seconds to live, Lucius and I were merciless and destroyed the ship. I howled in delight as debris flared off my shields, the explosion was a bright flash that vapourised two small asteroids. The Captain's pod was visible and both Lucius and I attempted to lock it but to our amazement, it jumped into warp instantly. The few remaining crew in their own life boats were ignored.

The captain opened up a conversation to me:

Phantom Sulker > I will find you and kill you when you are not with your buddy.

Great. Bring it on.

Concord confirmed the kill:

The loot from the wreckage was so-so, nothing T2-wise but plenty of ammo. Shame I haven't got a salvager here, one could make quite a bit of isk from the scrap floating round here.

Lucius and I congratulated each other on a good kill - a first I think for us both.

We both waited for the criminal flag to expire and then went out to seek more prey.

I found Ashval in a rifter this time and shaking my head in disbelief I warped into him his belt and killed him. He was understandably very pissed at me but I did tell him that he was in low-sec and that no-one was safe. I didn't pod him as I felt guilty - don't want him to hang up his pod controls and go back to being a planet-bound pleb now could I?

In the next system, I spotted a vagabond heavy assault cruiser. Never went after a HAC before but flushed with success I called out to Lucius who duly responded with a firm 'yes' on engaging the vagabond. He docked to fit double webbers and a MWD while I maintained an overwatch on the vagabond. He was moving from belt to belt in rapid succession - no doubt looking for victims.
However, Lucius informed me that as he as undocking from Gusandall - he spotted yet another Hurricane-class battle cruiser. Deciding that a second kill would be good, we decided to engage the new targer. Lucius went to engage it immediately while I fired up the warp engines and made the two jumps back to Lucius' position.

flashfresh > Second cane today I hope
Lucius Cain > V- 1
flashfresh > omw
Lucius Cain > I don't have scram
flashfresh > YAAARRR
flashfresh > I have 1pt
Lucius Cain > Hurry
flashfresh > In warp
Lucius Cain > Man, now i'm the damn Noob

I warped in and saw the familiar shape of a hurricane-class battle cruiser. It was double-webbed by Lucius but not scrambled. I got into range and hit a tight orbit and hit the disruptor.

flashfresh > Scrambled for one.
Lucius Cain > Get a point on him and you're an angel.
flashfresh > I have.
Lucius Cain > *phew*

Once again, this Hurricane pilot did not fit a medium nosferatu or any other anti-frigate defence. We attacked the hurricane much like before and soon her shields flared off in a bright flash and we pounded at her armour.

Lucius Cain> 'Cant believe our luck. Two hurricanes in such a short time!'
Flashfresh> 'Yah'

Then the hurricane fired up it's warp engines and left us alone.

Flashfresh> 'WTF?'
Lucius Cain > DO you know that sound when the tea pot starts boiling?
flashfresh > wtf?
Flashfresh> 'Damnnit, stabs....but it's still in-system. No wait, its docked. Damn.'
Lucius Cain> ' Well, at least we got one kill. Might need to refit this rig and put the scrambler back in. Damn it!'
Lucius Cain > Well that sucked... Talk about anti-climax.

Both of us were unhappy but congratulations to the Hurricane pilot for fighting as long. Warp Core Stabiliser do gimp most pilots setups so he was willing to take this hit. No matter. However, it was clear as Lucius and my criminal timer was counting down that the hurricane pilot was still docked. The to our amazement, he undocked and warped to another belt. We were torn between re-engaging him again, as with his single WCS - he negated my single, one-point warp disruptor. It would be a waste of ammo and worse, he probably refitted with specific anti-frigate weapons.
Still, we realised that he had undocked and was continuing to rat. We both looked up at our timers and we each had 6 minutes left.

Lucius Cain> 'This is the worst moment in EVE for me....'
Flashfresh> ' Yeah. Goddamnit - this timer is so slow. We need to refit and re-engage the 'cane!!!'
Lucius Cain> 'I know mate, I know!!!'

The timer was glacial as we prayed that the 'cane pilot would stay outside. Maybe it was waiting for us?

We also noticed that a taranis-class interceptor had also undocked. Lucius, in another scan spot then cried out:

Lucius Cain> 'Taranis has engaged the Hurricane'
Flashfresh> 'OK - we re-engage and take out the Inty. The inty pilot is a pirate anyways. Don't engage the Hurricane - wait until your global timer is out.'
Lucius Cain> 'Roger. Let's go.'

We both warped and landed a short distance from a furious fire-fight between the Interceptor and the Hurricane. The taranis was indeed piloted by a pirate (-9.6) so we engaged him and with Lucius' double-webber rifter - we killed the interceptor in short order. The pod escaped though.

Now it was round two: I had the Hurricane scrambled once more and orbitted around him, he threw heavy missiles at me but I could easily tank his damage. Lucius's global criminal flag finally expired and he quickly made his exit towards the station. I had to maintain contact with the hurricane. It was tricky though: I had to do enough damage to make him fight me, take enough damage so that he would stay long enough for Lucius to dock, refit with a 2 point scrambler and undock and rejoin the fight.

Gah.

I turned my armour repairer off and took the damage - hopefully this would force the Hurricane to stay for his 'kill'.

I was down to 35% armour and he was down to 10%, I had one single 200mm AC on him now, having turned off the other two.

Just as Lucius undocked with a new scrambler - the hurricane hit warp again.

Flashfresh> 'Shite. He warped out.
Lucius Cain> ' Nooooooo'
Flashfresh> ':-('
Flashfresh> 'Safespot, as local is beginning to fill up'
Lucius Cain> 'Roger. Shame we missed the second Hurricane kill'
Flashfresh> 'Yeah. We'll get our chance'

So we each zipped off to our own spots and waited.

Oddly, the hurricane Captain was still in local. I scanned and realised that he had docked. Then a thought occured to me. I voiced this to my partner:

Flashfresh> LC - you know, we could get a third shot at this 'cane.
Lucius Cain> Yeah?
Flashfresh> I think the fool has redocked to repair and I think he will come back out again. I mean we had two attempts to kill him and each time he escaped. Probably doesn't realise that you docked up to refit or even realised that we now know why we cant scramble him.
Lucius Cain> He cant be that stupid....
Flashfresh> Lets see....yes! he's undocked. Scan and find him!

We both quickly hit the scanners and let the machine do it's work. There! We located him at IV-2 and with a wary cry both Lucius and I pushed our ships into warp and hoped that the Hurricane was not running away.

Both frigates burst back into normal space, the entry bubble bursting like a supernovae and there it was: the same hurricane - fully repaired and shields back to 100%. No matter, unless it had refitted with another two warp core stabilisers - he was dead.

He re-targetted us, just as we did him - looks like he was eager for round three as much as we were. I locked and hit the disruptor and got into nosferatu range. My faithful 200mm ACs spat death in the form of screaming EMP projectiles. Lucius's guns also spoke the same deadly language.

The hurricane was frantically regenerating his shields and also, for the first time - hitting us with ECM. He was using the wrong one though on me but one cycle was sucessful.

Flashfresh> Careful! He is using ECM.
Lucius Cain> Roger.

We continued to orbit, weaving in and out of each other's orbits and dancing around the bright flashes of the Hurricane's medium autocannon projectiles. Without anything to slow us down, he had a hard time hitting us....however, the Captain hadn't been idle and in addition to a single ECM module - he also fitted a target painter and it was I who was illuminated.

His heavy missiles shook the punisher and my computer protested at the damage being caused, with an angry look I shut the automated messages off as I needed to concentrate on managing my capacitor and the repairer. Still, his damage was inconsistent and I managed to get on top of the damage and tank it.

Meanwhile, our furious onslaught had knocked the hurricane's shields down and we were once more drilling into its newly repaired armour. This time, there would be no escape. The ECM had also stopped and Lucius and I assumed that he was running low on capacitor energy. No matter, that was his problem.

The bloodlust was on me and I howled in delight as the shells started to bore into the hull. If the hurricane wanted to escape it would have tried by now and I could imagine the panic on the Captain's face as he realised that this time, he was stuck.

Lucius Cain> I think we have him!
Flashfresh> Yaaarrrrrr

The hull was now a smoking ruin, venting out fiery atmosphere and crew escape pods. The order to abandon ship was obviously given. We however, waited for the Captain's pod.

Lucius Cain> I want to pod him. He deserves it.

The hurricane shook as a length wise shudder ran through it and then in a bright flash it exploded in a bright multi-coloured flash. We saw the pod appear on our scanners and locked it. Both Lucius and I hit it with our ACs and it disappeared in a flash. The Captain was no more.

We searched the wreck but there wasn't much in it. No matter, it had been a good day for us. We managed to get some named medium autocannons and a T2 shield booster but it was the thrill of the chase and combat that we loved.

I had to dock and grab a beer while LC had to log.

We both agreed that it was a superb day. Long may these continue.

So a great day ended on a slightly downbeat note. No matter. There is always tomorrow.

21 Feb 2007

You win some and you lose some.....

Got another consignment of punishers.....I can't seem to get rid of them it would seem, so I went rummaging around the hangar and found enough bits and pieces to make another bleeder setup. I made a change and dropped a CPR for a damage control unit. I never seem to run out of cap before I die so why not make some changes? I also experimented with a few changes to the low slots but settled on the DCU variant.

Other setups (all variations in the low slots) included:

Variation one: x2 CPR, x1 200mm steel plate, x1 SAR
The standard Bleeder setup. Not bad but difficult against fast damaging opponents.

Variation two: x1 CPR, x1 200mm steel plate, x1 Damage Control Unit, x1 SAR
Dropping a CPR lowers the cap recharge rate but the DCU is very useful increasing the resists across the board.

Variation three: x1 CPR, x2 200mm Steel plate, x1 SAR
Increases the armour HP to 1500 and with the high resists; means it is a hard tanker.

Suitably tanked up I ventured out into my hunting grounds and stalked it. A few minutes later a rupture came into local. Oh yes, my heart beat faster as I checked out the information on the pilot. Still a RMS graduate but has been with them now for ten months. My goodness, is he having learning problems?

I wanted to test out the Bleeder against the rupture so was super-keen to take him out. It took me a few jumps before I found him, he left a trail of wrecks behind him so was easy to follow. I landed at 9Km from him and proceeded the scramble cycle. We exchanged fire but I then noticed that he was moving away from me: 1km, 3km, 5km - shite; he had a mwd installed and was pulling away from me. Partly my fault as I wasn't paying enough attention but I didn't want to get into a flat out race as my traversal would drop too low and his howitzers would tear me apart. I tried to re-orbit him but it was no good. From range, he started to hit while my trusty 200mm ACs failed to reach him.

Gah. I warped out and had to rethink my strategy. However, he left the system soon afterwards and I couldnot follow due to my criminal flag. Next time I need to be smarter as the bleeder doesn't have any webbers to slow fast ships down.

LC was busy in 0.0 with his corp mates but Revivor was back in town. I hooked up with her and we went hunting in Eifer. Local was busy and within a few moments, a rifter pilot - all cocky offered us a 1 v 1. Rozalina was her name and I admired her courage. Revivor and myself were hunting Rozalina, Underundertaker and threesixone but they were buzzing around the system like flies around crap.

We opted to wait for them to jump into a belt where we would be waiting. Within a few minutes, theesixone came screaming into the warp-in point in a freshly built rifter. Revivor and I proceeded to tear it to scrap. Revivor also podded the unlucky pilot.

Hmm decent weapons but a civilian shield booster doesn't cut it I'm afraid. Not local was down to two other pilots and Rozalina was asking (nay, demanding) that we meet her at a belt for some fisticuffs. I decided to warp to a scan spot first just to make sure all was ok. Revivor on the other hand leapt straight into belt IV-4 with a war cry.

She was jumped on by the remaining rifters so I turned round and went to help. Revivor was doing well but her shields were down. I locked underundertakers (also in a rifer) and proceeded to take her shields down. The 200mmACs spat EMP death and stripped her shields. Meanwhile, Revivor, who had targetted both Rozalina and Underundertaker knocked Rozalina's rifter out of the fight - Rozalina's pod popped out and blinking and just asking to be podded but no-one did the honours. I was too busy with underundertaker's rifter.

Her shields and armour disappeared quickly enough but it was then when I zoomed out a bit that I noticed a third rifter in the belt. Obviously, having just warped in and it went for the nearest pirate: Revivor. I heard her say someothing and then she was in a pod.

I quickly dispatched Underundertaker and scrambled the pod. Meanwhile, I had to quickly acquire the new target: another rifter piloted by Nak Nok. Not taking any chances I started to fire on Nak Nok with two of the 200mm ACs and the third 200mm AC was used to blow Underundertaker back to the cloning vats.

With Underundertaker duly dispatched, I concentrated on Nak Nok's rifter. It could hit hard and I suspected he was using Tech 2 ammo. Certainly my armour was protesting under the barrage. However, my tank held - and so did his but only for a minute. My 200mm ACs consistently scored hits on him, even without a webber and the NOS was adding more cap to my reserves while depleting his.

Nak Nok's tank was good though - probably some tech 2 stuff there too?

I controlled my cap flow and managed to get on top of the damage. Nak Nok's tank eventually broke (ran out of cap?) and my EMP rounds drilled into his hull. His ship exploded in a satisfying burst of light and debris - the scraps sparking off my remaining shields and armour. I quickly tried to acquire the pod as such a good fight deserved to end in a podding.

Nak Nok was good though and his capsule zipped off before I could even finish the lock cycle.

I looted what I could and collected the bodies.

Revivor then had to log - she only came on to check skills and ended up with two kills to her name and a lot of fun!

Later on in the evening - I spotted Dakker (MW) in local and we said hi. Have tangled with his corp and his predecessor corp (RLE) but they are a good bunch. He safe spotted while I went hunting for a thrasher that was ratting in Eifer.

Eifer is a big system with lot of belts, some of which are outside of scan range. Makes a challenge to get pilots. However, Bariaur (RMS) in his thrasher was trying to be careful as he knew there were other pilots around. I located him in belt V-3 and zipped in; my heart hammering and the adrenaline pumping through me. The thrill of chasing down a kill is still there, as intense as ever.

Bariaur's thrasher was a mixed AC and howie setup - not much of a pain but he was fast. The Bleeder came in, plasma trailing off it's sleek body from the warp tunnel and locked the thrasher. I hit the afterburner as soon as the navigation computer could align itself. I then pushed the punisher into a high-g 1000m orbit and started up the 200mm ACs.

The destroyer's shields soon fell to the trusty EMP shells. I wanted t get into his armour and chew into his hull. The bloodlust was on me and there was to be no mercy. His ACs scored hits on me but this is where the Bleeder's tanking ability and high resists came into it's own. The key
to the Bleeder is that it is hard to hit due to its size but if it does get hit: the high resists should reduce most of the damage. Finally, even if there's damage the SAR can be run almost indefinitely. Only issue with the bleeder is that it's damage is slow over time. I like to alpha-strike my targets. Fighting for a long time in a busy system is asking for trouble.

I took Bariaur down to hull and popped the ship. Bariaur pod was scrambled but he couldn't pay a ransom so he was popped.

We continued to chat once he recloned and swapped notes.

Meanwhile, a cyclone had appeared in local. I initiated chat with Dakker and asked if he wanted to hunt the cyclone down. We agreed on a truce and went after the battlecruiser. Dakker made contact first and I followed but I landed 48KM away. Dakker didn't have a scrambler and the cyclone managed to warp out.

Ach.

We hunted the cyclone over the next few minutes but a Myrmidon came into the fray. Ah, so things were getting complicated. We finally locked down the cyclone and proceeded into him. The Cyclone had problems hitting the rifter and the punisher but we could hit him.

We had him!

However, the myrmidon came into the fray. I warped out while Dakker stayed. A few nervous minutes passed and Dakker informed me that Taxus ( the myrmidon pilot) was so-far, neutral. I warped back in and landed on top of the Cyclone pilot (called Briaritus).

We killed him quickly, as the myrmidon had tech 2 drones. As soon as Briaritus cyclone popped- the Myrmidon turned on me! I was scrambled and his drones then proceeded to tear the punisher to pieces. Even before the damage reached the hull I was attempting to warp out.

The Punisher was shattered into small pieces under the combined firepower of the Myrmidon's 425mm autocanon II (yes, ACs) and his tech 2 drones. I warped out - so much for Taxus and his myrmidon being neutral.

Briaritus was podded and Dakker also lost his ship. Taxus had a good night.

14 Feb 2007

Valentine Day's Surprise

Not much love this time round. Black Fleet have decided to park themselves in Gusandall and one pilot just talks and talks and talks. Gah, gives me a headache!!!

However, Auren was a bit quieter and I was stalking two ships (vexor and rupture) there. The rupture was piloted by an old victim (Tazit1z) and I called in Lucius for assistance. It was a game of cat and mouse for ages though with new pilots coming in frequently. It was clear the two Moon Hawk Corporation pilots were ratting as they left wrecks all over the place; however each time me and Lucius were too slow. The vexor was the most dangerous ship with its myriad of drones but a challenge is a challenge. The vexor pilot was also at least six months old so had decent skills we think.

Finally, local cleared down to only four pilots (me, Lucius, Taz and his mate) and Taz made a mistake and ended up in a belt - his mate warped off to another part of the system so LC and I made our move. I arrived first and landed 6KM away - excellent! My heart thumping - I locked on and hit the scrambler. Then I started to loose off EMP roounds. LC came screaming in a second later and his T2 ACs spat death.

Amazingly, the rupture did not have drones.

We tore into the rupture and laughed as Taz' mate LEFT local, leaving Taz on his own! He was toast and begged us to stop but he was already in structure and soon popped.

BoomYah.

But the rat got the kill mail - a freaking Angel frigate decided to get involved and boom. Landed the killing blow. We got the pod however.

Later on in the evening I was back on in Gusandall having made a 14-jump journey and it yielding no kills. Gusandall was full of Black Fleet pilots (again) but there were a handful of other non-aligned pilots. I spotted one in a Thrasher and decided he was a good target but he was a slippery chap.....

I went into the Angel plex but it was empty except of wrecks and I lacked the key to move to the next level. It was then that I spotted a new pilot....in a retriever come into local. With a manic laugh, I hit the jump drive. Just as I was leaving, another red blinky came into the complex in a merlin. It was Geigher (-9.6) and I had my eye on him. Better he stay out of my way and no funny business.

I landed in the first of three target belts but the retriever was nowhere to be seen. Frustratingly, he was still on scanner and I managed to eventually land on him. On came the scrambler and the tight orbit. Boom, boom. I quickly convo'ed him and asked for a 10million isk ranson, he took ages to reply but came back with a counter offer of 5 million.

I said no and repeated the offer with a time limit of 10 seconds.

He still wanted to bargain me down to 5million isk so I shredded his armour. Then something amazing happened. He ejected from the ship and sat there. I wondered WTF? but continued to blast his mining barge to scrap. I then scrambled the pod....as he hadn't even warped out. I was about to get another ransom when Giegher screamed into the same belt as me.

He targetted me and scrambled me just as I was 'negotiating' with Bahamut420. Gah - Giegher was more of a danger so I had to disengage.

Bahamut420 > FUCK YOU

Well, that was nice.

Anyway, Giegher in his merlin was now a threat. I tried to jump out as I didn't want to fight him but he had me scrambled. With that decision made, I went for him. His merlin was orbitting me at between 5-6km and even with my afterburner I could not close the distance. He had railguns that picked at my shields and my cap was going down fast. He had two small nosferatus on me.

I quickly shut down some mods and tried to save cap and returned fire. Even at 6KM my lovely 200mm autocanons were scoring hits. I turned off the warp disruptor as I reckoned Giegher was too intent on me to warp himself out. He wouldn't notice that my disruptor was off.

My EMP shells screamed across the vacuum and flared off on the merlin's shields. I was down to 35% armour but the tank had finally kicked in and held steady. The repairer was working at optimal effeciency while the merlin's shields were failing.

Once into his armour, like all other Caldari ships - their armour is like paper.

At this point, I knew that I had won this contest. I occasionally switched on the disruptor - just to make sure that Giegher decided to warp out. His Merlin was tough but not tough enough. His armour was eventually stripped off and his hull, well couldn't stand up to the pounding and fell to my 200mm ACs. I also snagged the pod and PK'ed him as I wanted my first bounty collection. Pity his bounty was only 55K isk!
