Hanging around our station? Nahhh

We killed McNoto's Armageddon outside one of our stations - his fit was very good and we knew it would be a tough tank to break, especially if he attempts to dock up immediately. He stayed outside and with some friends popped a few of us over the evening, all frigates but down to silly mistakes. However, McNoto's continued presence outside was his eventual undoing. Hera undocked a couple of times in his dominix and drew aggression a couple of times while the rest of our pilots made ready. I selected my maelstrom and reloaded with large hail ammunition. The minutes ticked by as we heard Hera's commentary.

"He's firing on me. He's now aggressed. All pilots hold." There was a hiss of static as Hera's own weapons joined with McNoto's laser batteries.

"Shit, he hits hard too." Observed Hera, a slight trace of concern in her voice. Slight mind. Nothing to worry about.

"Hera, shall we undock?" Asked one pirate.

"Negative. Hold. Hold." There were a slight interference on our own scanners due to the close proximity of the large laser discharges from McNoto's mighty armageddon.

The seconds ticked by, then Hera gave the order.

"Undock. Undock. Engage. Engage."

Seven other ships, a mix of battle cruiser and battle ship class vessels were spat out into space. Proximity alarms blared in warning as our seven ships came close to colliding with the golden hued mass of McNoto's armageddon and Hera's own dominix class battle ship. So close, no-one could really miss and everyone in the fleet unloaded a fearsome broadside into the enemy war target Armageddon.

McNoto had instantly stopped firing and ceased all hostile activity in order to let the harmful energy discharges to dissipate fully before it could dock up in safety. This period after the last hostile action and before one could dock was about thirty seconds. We had to rip through the immense defensive armour of a properly equipped armageddon in under half a minute. A tall order without a massive amount of ships and / or capital ships.

My maelstrom shuddered as the 800mm artilleries thundered out the deadly hail ordnance.

"Pour it on! Pour it on!" Roared RoninData.

I had one eye on the tactical readout, the armageddon was already shield-less but his armour was sitting at 75%.

"Overheat! Overheat! Burn out the guns. Get him!" Pushed RoninData. No replies from the fleet but the intensity of fire increased.

I toggled my communications to my weapon engineers. "Ordnance."

"Yes sir?"

"Take the safeties off the 800mm ACs and red-line them. Push them past their limits. I want maximum damage."

"Yes sir. Safeties all off."

My guns started to glow red as the damage output increased by 15% with a corresponding level of heat damage to the barrels, gyrostabilisers and loading mechanisms as I pushed the guns beyond safety limits. I didn't care.

"Shit. He's going to make it. He's going to dock..." Complained one pirate.

"He's going down! He's going down!" Countered Hera.

"He's into hull. He's dying. I see crew escape pods already being jettisoned." Said Maltrox.

With a shudder, the armageddon, probably seconds from docking up, broke up in two as one of it's plasma reactors went critical and tore the heart out of the ship. The station rocked slightly as the battle ship blossomed out like a new sun. The super-hot cloud incinerating some of the closer crew capsules.

There were cheers on the bridges of our ships as we were showered by the debris field. We loved this. McNoto expertly whipped his capsule out.

The killmail is here. We all agreed that McNoto's fit was a very good one - plenty of damage potential with enough armour to withstand a tremendous amount of punishment. The fit shows us that COM-S have some damn good pilots.

Mach and Mega Meal at the gate.....drive-by take out please.

Capt Nessaja (aka Nessa), Tenchuu Khaan (aka TK and pictured), RealZonk (aka Zonk) and I were out hunting for a raven, running some sort of kill mission but it had been proving to be a most, elusive prey of the night.Numerous probes were dropped but the raven pilot was evading us. Taunting us even, with his continued presence.

The scanner piped and I checked the results. I toggled the fleet channel:

"Raven has left system."

There was a groan from the small fleet's captains as we all scrambled over to the various gates and jumped into neighbouring systems, hoping we could catch the raven.

No such hope.

Grumbling, I pinged the scanner a couple of times more before leaving. I stopped and starred at the result. I checked local and scanned again. I reached out to my fleet mates.

"Guys, I see a Machariel and a Megathron on scan. We have some friendlies but those two beauties are not ours."

"Flash. You sure?" queried Nessaja.

"Yeah, am sure. Goddamn Mach and Mega on scan. Towards the Arnstur gate in Gultratren. There's also a couple of NO FEAR pilots in local too." I said. "We saw one of them in a vaga going through Brin." I added. After some fiddling with the scanner and the process of elimination we had more or less narrowed down the possible battleship pilots.

"Then I am going to get my maelstrom." Said Zonk in a matter-of-fact voice - he swung his ship towards his homebase.

"Getting my Domi." Added Nessaja as he too, left for home. Steady on I thought, we haven't even located them let alone pointed them! However, I guess Zonk and Nessa's instincts were stronger than mine on this occasion.

"Am on my way to the gate. Phear my ruppie of doom!" Roared TK; completely disregarding the danger he was in. He just wanted that tackle and had no interest in changing ships.

I re-aligned towards a safe spot and waited. It was a few jumps back to my home base as well; I could really do with my hurricane and not this rupture. Gate fighting is fun but against monstrous brutes like a megathron- and machariel-class battleships, under sentry protection as well? However, TK had made his stand and I was going to stick around to help him out. No sooner had he settled onto the gate, that his voice came over the communications channel, excitement clear.

"NO FEAR Corporation Vagabond locking me."

"ID of pilot TK?" I asked, though I had a pretty good idea which one, I began reloading barrage ammunition into my dual-180mm auto canons.

" Tial'C and he's firing on me!" TK laughed manically, "Yes! Am coming to get you, you.... " the rest of TK's response was lost in a burst of static as his guns opened up.

"Fleet: enemy vagabond has aggressed on the Arnstur gate in Gultratren!" I began my warp to the gate; the rupture picking up speed as it aligned to the destination.

"Zonk; one jump."

"Nessa; one jump also. Overkill for a single vaga. Where's that Mega?"

My rupture was mid-way towards the gate when the communications cleared and TK shouted out.

"Mach and Mega at the gate. They've just come through.....They've fired on me!" There was something incoherent as TK's communications broke down once more, no doubt interference from the weapons' discharges. The TK came back. "Going down. Going down."

Cursing at my long warp - I hoped that TK could hold on.

"TK - move away from the gate!" I said, not being too helpful.

"What do you think I am doing?" I didn't get a chance to reply as my sensors detected the sudden presence of a pod.

"TK is down. TK is down. Didn't even get a chance to fire on the mach and mega! Shit!"

"Mach? Where?" It was Maro from M34N corp who was listening in. "Am undocking!" Nothing could stop Maro or his friend, Jubes from throwing his ship into the fray.

"Arnstur gate in Gultratren." I said.

"OMW," replied Maro.

Meanwhile, back near the gate. "GF." Offered Tial'C in local, no doubt proud of the kill. Having a machariel and megathron arrive definitely tipped the odds!

My rupture arrived just as TK's pod whipped out from under the sentry guns and the dual brooding presence of a machariel- and megathron-class battleship. The vagabond, no doubt damaged from her engagement with TK's rupture, was nowhere to be seen. The two battleships' guns were still glowing from the salvo they had delivered into TK's rupture. They turned their guns onto me. I locked them. The targeting reticles cycled. It was going to get very ugly. My targeting computer resolved it's lock and I threw a point onto the machariel.

"Flashfresh here: Mach pointed." I croaked. The sentry guns spun up. I braced myself for the inevitable battering from battleship class weapons as they slowly turned their attention to me.

"Hold on Flash. We're almost there." It was Zonk, his accent is unmistakeable.

Then things happened very quickly.

Multiple gate fire seared my senses. Zonk and Nessa were back, in their battleships. Maro also joined in his megathron, a second later.

"Who's primary?"

"The Mach." Replied Zonk.

"The Mega!" Someone else counter-ordered.

"The Fecking MACH is the primary!"

Oh the confusion. The shouting. The swearing. With no recognised FC, it was a brutal affair. Half the ships now engaged were not in the original fleet of four and therefore they cluttered each other's overviews. More pirates were being alerted and we had Annapolis, Mandaro and WayCharles on the way. The latter bringing in the curse. The machariel is very fast for a battleship and was in danger of leaving the battlescene, so the presence of WayCharles' curse was vital. My rupture was spewing out gasses and fluids as the hammering it was getting from the both Machariel and the sentry guns was just too much.

"Flash is disengaging. Someone take over the point on the Mach."

"Mach has been pointed. Go." Said someone, it sounded like Nessa. It was unclear as I was in danger of popping in a spectacular fashion. My rupture re-aligned and whipped out. My warp engines un-molested. Meanwhile, there were curses as the machariel was moving out of the other pirates' ranges. It wasn't until WayCharles had arrived and hit the fast battleship with a couple of energy neutralisers that the prey was locked down. We had no losses and both the enemy megathron and machariel were down. The Mach dropped some gorgeous loot. Concord, efficient as ever recorded both the megathron and machariel kills. Check out the dread gurista cloaking device that survived the explosion.

In all, the loot drop totalled between 400-450million isk according one pirate, so a nice payout to all of us. Very nice indeed and fair play to the pilot for having enough courage to undock in his faction battleship in the first place.

The Typhoon that almost got away, Smack in local and killing some maelstroms!

Hunting is always a challenge and without a network of spies and information brokers, I would be very hard pressed in finding targets. Targets means ransom and salvage and that means ISK. When I am not in my ship and in space, then I am hunched over my numerous screens, my eyes scanning over hundreds of channels, verbal reports whispering out from numerous speakers - giving my operations hub the background noise of a call centre. I pay my spies to keep an eye out for targets.

The reports scrolled over and illuminated my face, the reflections of them flickering over my face and after a couple of hours, there was very little hard information on profitable targets. Just as I was going to leave and get a drink at the Independence bar, there was a beep - it's volume increasing with every passing second.

I took one look at the report and the pilot making it and hit the scramble button. My crew jumped up from their bunks and raced towards the waiting hurricane. I also hastily set up a call-up of pirates and set up a fleet.

"Move, move, move!" I shouted at the fleet, the ships moving in from four different directions. towards Arnstur. Like a wolf pack, we were being vectored into the last known location of a typhoon-class battle ship. We had a myrmidon, two vagabonds and my hurricane. More than enough, even tackling on a gate.

"Ships - scatter, we're looking for Ruantin Form. In a 'phoon, last known location was Todi, he's in Arnstur, I think."

"Roger that." Replied the other three pilots, Nessaja, Muhaar and Kerjin. The fleet broke up and went to all the possible exits. It was Kerjin who found him.

"He's in Arnstur."

The rest of the fleet vectored in on Kerjin. Kerjin locked but did not active any hostile action. He tried to bump the battleship off vector but was unable to. I tried as well but the gravitational anomalies around a star gate made things very difficult. I missed the battleship by the proverbial mile. The typhoon, though locked by me and Kerjin - did not fire. Nor did we, as the weapons' discharges would have prevented us from jumping immediately.

"Bump him off the gate!"

"Trying damnit!"

"He's in Gultratren and fuck, missed him!" I said, de-cloaking too far for even my over-heated warp disruptor. The typhoon, leisurely re-aligned and warped to the next gate: Rokofur a high-security system.

"He's going to the high-sec gate. Need to point him!" Said Muhaar as he whipped his vagabond into warp. We had no webbers however so this was going to be tricky. Tackling under the watchful eyes of sentry guns is not a good tactic but we had to try.

It was Muhaar who arrived first.

"Shit, he fell short of the gate. He's 12km from it."

I arrived at the gate and had to turn around. The typhoon, for whatever reason, was too far to instantly activate the gate and jump. We had a window, albeit a slim one.

"Flash going in for the tackle."

I locked and switched on the warp disruptor. I was right next to a gate guns and the automated devices spun-up and locked me.

++Flashfresh, for your illegal weapons discharge, you will be punished++

My hurricane was rocked to the port and then starboard as high-velocity shells spat out at me.

Well, in for the penny, then in for the pound I thought to myself and powered straight towards the Typhoon. My 425mm auto canons are devastating at close range and even a battle ship had to take notice. The typhoon pilot locked me. He was now 9km from the gate, Muhaar, Kerjin and Nessa had him locked and they too opened fire.

The the typhoon pilot, possibly panicking, returned fire.

The fool had sealed his fate.

"Typhoon is firing weapons. Gate will not let him through now!"

A quirk of the star gate mechanics was that it was extremely sensitive to energy discharges characteristic of most weapons' system. Just like you need to cool down food before you put it into a cryo-storage, so too did you need to give weapons' time to 'cool' off. For a ship, it would take about 30 seconds after the last weapon was fired before the gate would allow him to jump. The typhoon was still firing. It should have stopped, tanked the damage and jumped.

Maybe the pilot did stop firing and tried to jump immediately, on seeing the denial, am sure he panicked and started firing again. Whatever.

He died all the same.

A Ransom - thank you Mr. 30 MILLION isk man and others!!
Now, the last few days I must have hit a rich seam of isk heavy pilots and in most cases, the mark instantly fired a message to me asking for the ransom amount in order to save their ship(s).

I needed isk and some ships I caught in the belt were big juicy targets - the pilots were desperate to pay me in order to escape:

The Act:

Here's a drake that I caught in a belt, the pilot did the right thing and pinged me a message: 'How Much?'.

I said "30 million please."

Cha-Ching.

I then let him go.

Faction frigate madness and smackalicious

Kane is a pirate and pilot who I count as a friend and I have tremendous respect for him. He wanted to celebrate his birthday and what better than to get a bunch of faction frigates and go for a roam? When a Dramiel- or Firetail-class frigate is seen in a belt, ratting - it does bring out the pirates in most people. We wanted to use this to our advantage.

I strapped myself into a Firetail-class frigate, fitted like my rifter but with one less auto canon and an extra rocket launcher. This ship has paper for armour but it relied on speed to get out of trouble. Kane was in his succubus and WayCharles also joined in. A zealot and vagabond also came in and it turned into a fast roaming gang. Unfortunately, not everyone had the means to get hold of a faction frigate but meh, a gang is a gang.

We started the night with a prophecy and brutix kill, very nice but was a bit horrified at the terrible armour of the firetail. The fight details are here.

Then we went to Katugumur and found a typhoon ratting, we jumped into the belt, seconds after a thorax and brutix had screamed in, also intent on the same kill. The 'rax and brutix jumped out and we tackled the 'phoon. Poor DPS from us and we also lost the tackle - then the smack began. Very funny to be honest, we should have at least locked down the 'phoon but meh. Kane has a more full account here.

Maelstrom Kills and welcome BoB

A few days later, I got two maelstrom kills and a deimos kill. Superb and excellent job to our probers for finding the missioning pilots. Lovely!

Always kill someone. Always.

++Back++

Due to real-life issues I missed the big corp operation that involved Black-Flag, Hellequin and The Bastards moving some assets and ships up to a 0.0 staging spot. As I stated a few week's back; Black-Flag are roaming now and not just a 'one-evening-let's-saddle-up-and-go' type of roam but more of a 'hello-we're-going-to-be-here-for-a-couple-of-weeks' type of roam. Logistics is the key here and a supply chain needs to be set up that can drip feed supplies and ships to cover losses and consumables. All this takes time to set up so pirating actions have been limited now as we concentrate on getting a decent forward base, supply caches and routes. Not too sure how the locals will react but we should soon find out. After a period, we will then move out to another area. We'll always come back to Gusandall however - it's our home where most of us cut our teeth.

I need to contact Viper Sam to see what needs to be done - I still need a ship there at the forward operating base and will have to get ready when the next operation is in order.

Meanwhile, I have not been idle.

++Meet the Maelstrom++

Yes, the newest ship to join the Black-Flag line-of-battle ships went for a shake down cruise and came back, no kills but with an extremely happy Captain. The current fit is confidential but does utilise the bonuses of the maelstrom-class battleship to the extreme. I would be interested in comparing other ships setups with other pirates. Am sure there are some very interesting fits out there. Needless to say, the maelstrom will provide much needed DPS to any engagement, one can have too many points but never too much DPS. Am still a tad worried about it's resistance to ECM however as I seem to see Falcon-class recon ships with most gangs over three ships in the fleet.

++Always kill everything++

Always kill everything. Always. Blow up all ships. Check the wrecks. Always.

Why?

Because of this.

Keanez is a new member of the Independence channel but he was quite excited today and well, goddamn is all I can say.

Nice haul!!!!

++Other bits++

Just a quiz but I have spotted some very odd portraits and I wonder if we can identify them? Most are either friends of mine, people I have killed or readers of this blog. The portrait mash-ups are due to come cock-up with the 'puter am using.

++Kills++

Ah what about kills? I snagged a rifter and a thrasher on my lunch break. The rifter was ratting in Eifer and I was in my jaguar. Very one-sided unfortunately but I was in it to help hunt out a cyclone that was meant to be moving around. Using the local scanner, I quickly pin-pointed the craft at the IV-1 belt and making sure that weapons were all warmed up, I jumped in and dispatched the pilot effortless. I was a noob however as I failed to snag the pod - been playing with my overview settings and the 'capsule' was not now visible. Very silly.

The Thrasher was a bit tougher, but not by much.

Oh, some funny back-chat by some after some pirate (Lucius - see below) tried to snag him:

[13:43:10] Gerfem > LOL @ pirate who tried to kill me....I HAVE A WARP STABILISER BEOTCH!

Er, indeed.

++Old Friends++

Finally a welcome return to an old friend of mine: Lucius Cain. He left the area and joined up with Blood Corsair's but the alliance (Blood Blind) finally closed down and now Lucius is back in his old stomping grounds and I welcome him back to the Independence channel.

Welcome back Luc!

The scariest looking pilot in EVE.............

7 Mar 2008

It's a trap! It's a trap! Yes, we know. Let's go in!

"It's probably a trap but let's go in and spring it. I want to kill something more."

I looked up at RedBad, his killboard was heaving with kills this morning. It was obvious he wanted more. "Sounds fun but any idea what they'll be bringing?"

Redbad shook his head and grinned. "Best way to find out is to go and see." Pirates. I love them and Redbad is one of the better ones that I know. He is with Tempered Steel Legion and despite the ups and downs between all the pirate organisations in Gusandall, Redbad and I have kept in touch throughout this period. He frequents the Independence bar and likes to drink a 'Jovian Headache' - a concoction of his own that appears to includes quafe, milk and rocket-fuel. It is foul but seems to power up Redbad to no end.

The docking booms retracted as our ships moved out of the station. Intelligence had informed us of a single myrmidon on Katugumur. The pilot was not immediately familiar to me but we had tangled with his alliance before. Jumping through into Katugumur, Redbad and I were distracted as WayCharles (another TSL pilot) called out to us:

"OriasV is aggressed and hitting me outside Kat station."

"He'll probably dock but worth a try for giggles eh Flash?" Redbad's maelstrom was already aligning towards the station.

"What the hell, why not?" Mentally, I wandered how quickly we could get OriasV down to hull before he managed to dock up. A quick scan revealed that our lone myrmidon was still in space, towards the V cluster. He will wait. No one else was visible though there was a second pilot from the same alliance in the local communication channel. No doubt cloaked.

"Fire in the hole!" Yelled Redbad as his maelstrom unleashed a mighty strike towards OriasV's drake. The drake was rocked back, it's shields shimmering.

"He's de-aggressed already," said WayCharles.

"Then we better hurry," replied Redbad, his ship pausing to reload ammunition.

"Flashfresh engaging." My auto canons spun up and emp ammunitions screamed out towards the Drake. His shields were gone. Then the drake docked.

"Damn."

"Another second and we would have had him." Complained WayCharles. Redbad was already aligning his maelstrom towards the V cluster.

"Myrmidon is still here. Let's go." His maelstrom's engines flared up and then he was gone. I quickly aligned my hurricane, the frame groaning as it fought against the artificial gravity well of the station.

"Flashfresh en route."

"Hurry, myrmidon is still there. I need you to tackle Flash. Redbad engaging."

"Incoming in three seconds." My webber and disruptor snapped on and sank their teeth into the lonely myrmidon. "Flashfresh engaging. Myrmidon pointed and webbed."

"Roger. Let's see if this is a trap." Surely it was and within seconds, my overview had a second flashing target.

"Red, arazu 14km. This myrmidon is tanked. Will take a while to break it. Arazu is primary."

WayCharles having docked up and changed ships joined. "WayCharles incoming in manticore. Will engage Arazu." Was half-hoping to see Way in his scorpion-class battleship but a manticore will do.

I sent my ecm drones towards the Arazu as the myrmidon was relying on it's drones for attack. Redbad was holding steady and the arazu was quickly destroyed.

"Local just jumped. We have incoming." Intelligence reports from a previous engagement was a bit sketchy but we were expecting these guys to be bringing some more dps. Then there were three flashes close to the myrmidon and we were facing an armageddon-class battleship, a munnin-class HAC and a deimos-class HAC. The fight had turned and their trap was sprung. We had a maelstrom, a manticore and a hurricane facing this group. There was also an ares-interceptor with us (piloted by Serenator) but in terms of DPS it wasn't enough. We weren't expecting any more help either. My gui flashed red as I was being warp scrambled. I maintained fire on the myrmidon but it's shields would not shift. I could not shield repair Redbad either as I had foolishly moved to far away from his maelstrom, chasing the myrmidon too far into the belt.

"Redbad to all ships: Break. Break. Break."

The order to disengage rang through our fleet channel, decision made WayCharles whipped his manticore out, while the ares hit it's micro warp drive. I was warp scrambled but turned on the micro warp drive and powered my way out of warp disruptor range.

Redbad stayed behind covering the retreat, trading fearsome broadsides with the armageddon, the deimos and the munnin. The maelstrom, as a solo ships is deadly but it still needs some support and we didn't have enough.

Should we have stayed and tried to fight our way out? Sometimes, split decisions are made and need to be acted upon immediately and in hindsight, if we had time - we could have chosen differently. I was too far from the main part of the fight due to the pursuit of the myrmidon but the deimos should have been made primary after the arazu was knocked out.

Redbad was brave and stayed put until his maelstorm was shot to pieces underneath him. He saved his pod.
