Bastards in teh news

Bastards in the news, okay old news but any exposure is good.....Massively

Being a patient nub and going after an ishkur.

Sometimes patience pays off, being a nub doesn't help but patience and the ability to learn and have fun helps. I had spottted an ishkur in local and decided to try and hunt it down. The thrill of piracy for me is the ability to move and hunt down a mark as it runs from one system to another. Maybe oblivious to my intentions or completely aware of it and leading me on a merry chase. No matter, so long the mark stays in low-sec and undocked, I have the patience to hunt you down. Now, of course, the use of scan probes may have made it a *little* bit easier to scan mission runners but it takes time and patience and max'ed out skills to do so. Also, a fair amount of missions are completely off plain and impossible to scan out.

So it's back to using the scanner and my brains.

The ishkur pilot was not a rookie and knew what he was doing. He was moving between the belts and picking off choice Angel rats. The wrecks still spluttering and sparking. The ishkur was close. I flipped open the scanner and scanned again; maybe in the complex? I went there, anticipation building. Arriving at the beacon, I activated the gate and it sling shot me through into a deep system. Wrecks bumped off my Wolf-class assault frigate. Checking the wrecks, they bore the energy signatures of the ishkur. He was here and probably passed through into the next level.

I had to wait. Patience. So I sat in the first level of the complex and waited.

Nothing.

The ishkur was still around, so I warped out and sat in the safe. The ishkur hadn't moved but after 15 minutes, it shifted its position. It looked like it was back in the first complex level? Not wanting to miss this opportunity I activated the engines and bolted through the beacon gates. As my warp tunnel evaporated around me, the white square of the ishkur winked on in my overview.

Laughing, I locked him and hit my micro-warp drive to close the distance.

SHIT. My Microwarpdrive? Oh no..... I groaned to myself. I was in a complex and the mwd could not activate. The ishkur had locked me and had sent it's drones onto me and they were busy chewing into my shield. I was too far and the ishkur could control the range. His webber came on as well.

Making a decision to leave, I aligned and warped out, praying that the ishkur pilot had not activated his scrambler or did not have one. There was a pause as my engines fired up and my wolf lurched into space. I was out of the complex and a little bit embarrassed too.

I docked and switched an afterburner in and undocked. Going back to the plex, the ishkur had gone. Bah.

Cursing my own stupidity, I had to make amends. The ship was still on scanner and had not yet docked. So, once more I waited and zipped around the belts and planets hoping the ishkur pilot would make a mistake. After 15 minutes, I docked up. A taranis pilot, a pirate, tried his luck with the ishkur pilot but was beaten off. At least that is what I gathered from the chat in the local communication window. Not too sure if he had lost his ship in the process.

So once more, I was out and the hunt began once more. I was not going to let go and nor was this ishkur going to leave. I scanned and he was around but had moved over towards the V cluster. I jumped to Planet V and scanned. He was not at the belts but had once more, moved. I moved to another scanning point and I had him again. He was back towards the complex. Maybe he gave the complex time to respawn so he could go back in again?

I landed at the familiar beacon and activated it.

The device sling shot me into deep-space and there was the ishkur with a cheetah next to him. What luck! I locked both and scrambled the ishkur. The cheetah warped off. In hindsight, I should have scrambled the cheetah and attacked the ishkur; as the pilot had already proven he was eager fight.

No matter, with an afterburner glowing hotly, I closed the distance and the ishkur's webber came on and my velocity dropped. No matter, my inertia allowed me to drift close enough to my optimal that I could hit it. My x4 ACs spun it and spat out EMP rounds. The ishkur's drones screamed out towards while his neutron blasters tore into my shields.

My shields dropped quickly and I was into armour, with my tech 2 repper coming on. My cap dropped alarmingly fast. I had to maintain fire though. The drones were tech 2 hobgoblins and they tore into my armour blazingly fast. My repper kept up but my cap did not. I switched off the afterburner and had to toggle the disruptor to save more cap. With the disruptor off, there was a chance the ishkur pilot would want to leave....but I doubt it. I was into 75% armour and he was just entering his. He could smell a kill. I could smell defeat.

My cap was empty and my disruptor was in danger of switching off. I took a gamble and switched to hail. It meant ten seconds of limited damage, as only my rocket launcher would be firing but I needed the extra DPS on the ishkur's armour. At least, this ishkur did not have a nos or neut on it.

Some cap recharged and I decided not to switch on the disruptor - most people fighting would either try to leave straight away or leave close to when they're about to pop. Peeps rarely leave the fight when they appear to be winning. My armour dropped to 50% when I pulsed my small repper. A few seconds later I pulled it back to 65%. I switched off the repper. Let's look as if I am in trouble (which I was!). I had to keep him here.

Since he was using cap heavy blasters - the ishkur would be encountering cap problems himself unless it had a cap booster installed; and I knew he didn't. He had me scrambled and webbed and from his velocity, he had an afterburner. That's three medium slot items right there. The ishkur only has three medium slots.

My ACs could fire without any cap. Thank the elders that I could, since with hail and short range, the damage output from me was much more. It started to tear chunks out of the ishkur - and yes, he was repairing it and thus, depleting his cap further. I wasn't idlying but I was keeping my armour around 35-45%. Risky as hell but it was the only way I could preserve my capacitor. Also, my managing my cap and displaying serious armour damage was acting as a 'webber' and scrambler to the ishkur pilot: he was not leaving. He was hooked, even if he didn't know it.

My capacitor creapt back up past 50% as my repper pulsed once more. The ishkur, was only 3KM from me and I was scoring good hits on it. He was trying to kill my armour and his drones were buzz-sawing their way in. My repper was just keeping up. Just.

My velocity suddenly increased. This meant that the webber was off me. Means that the ishkur was now out of capacitor. Probably meant that the scrambler was off me too.

I decided that is was time to kill this ishkur.

I opened up my afterburner to increase my orbitting speed and pounded on him. The hail ripped holes into the ishkur. Yes, it was a drone monster but it could not out damage my wolf now. The ishkur did not last long after his webber turned off and in a glorious flash - was vapourized, I missed the pod though.

The fight felt like hours but in reality it was over in a little over two minutes.

My heart was pounding and his drones were still buzzing round me though they had stopped attacking me as their command link was now broken. I eagerly scooped up the drones into my hold, with the full intention of reprogramming them for my own use.

Moving over to the loot, I sent the salvage bots over to it and I was delighted in recovering a fair number of tech 2 modules. The concord email below showed me that the ishkur was completely T2 fitted and had two rigs as well. The loss to the pilot was in the region of a cool +44million isk.

I recovered the following loot: Small Nosferatu II, Light Neutron Blaster II, Warp Scrambler II, Stasis Webifier II, Damage Control II, Small Armor Repairer II, Reactor Control Unit II,
and nine Hobgoblin II drones. I think the haul came to about 12-14million isk based on local prices. Nice. Nice.

Love piracy.

How did we miss an afk and auto-piloting brutix?

Yes, somehow we missed an afk, auto-piloting brutix battlecruiser. It was spotted in gusandall sedately moving towards eifer.

We had WayCharles (cerberus), Snake Boy (rifter), Grunanca (Sleipnir?) and me. By the time I undocked, the brutix was already in Eifer and no doubt heading towards Emolgranlan. I had to move and arrived in eifer just as the brutix had warped out towards the Emol gate; still under autopilot. WayCharles was too far to engage it with his warp disruptor and prevent it from warping out. The gate guns were firing away at Grun and WayCharles but now we had to get ahead of the brutix and somehow slow it down before the auto-pilot could jump out into high-sec space. Warp disruptors would be useless, we needed webbers and only Snake Boy had one. He was in a rifter and would not stand long against the sentry guns.

I arrived at the gate a second after the WayCharles who had engaged the brutix, eight seconds later I and Grunanca locked and opened fire. The brutix went down to armour and then into hull though it still trundled towards the gate. Snake was poised ready to web it. As soon as we opened fire we got flagged again to the guns and we needed to split the fire long enough so that Snake would only get a fraction of the gunfire.

"Web it now! Web it now!"

Shit.

The brutix then jumped into Emol - in hull now and on fire. I wonder if the pilot was aware of his close brush with death?

We were too slow.

However, much fun anyways! Next time.

A trap! A trap!

After yesterday's fun, the fleet was still buzzed about the fight. We still hadn't got all the loot sorted but there was more pickings to be had. We scanned down a scythe that had twice eluded us. I managed to snag it in my wolf once I joined the pirate fleet. We killed the ship but missed the pilot and thus a ransom.
Later on in the day, we had spied a four battleship camp. It was mainly a Roadkill gang, quite far from home it would seem. We made ready to ambush it with our own pirate fleet. The camp was on the Ingunn gate in Gusandall. Quickly, we moved our ships into position: me, Deathstar, Jubes and Krypt in Gusandall. Muhaar, Ichiro, RealZonk and Redbad in safe spots in Ingunn. We were going to catch them on either side and knock them out quick. It would be tough: the enemy fleet was made up of two megathron-class, one raven class and one dominix class battleship. Very tough for a mixed battleship / battlecruiser fleet. We had RealZonk in his tempest as our only battleship. The rest were a mix of force recons and hurricanes. No matter, our aim was to knock out the dominix and then the raven in quick order.

"Shit. Am under fire. Am engaged. Assistance required!" It was Ichiro.
"Say again, Ichiro. Say again?" I had to be sure.
"Hyperion and Hurricane on me and Redbad. Assistance required." Confused, I quickly checked my intelligence notes. There wasn't a hyperion facing us, it was a raven-class, megathron-class and dominix-class battleships we were facing. Not a hyperion. What the hell was going on?
"What the fuck is going on?" Complained Deathstar. "The BS camp is still there, hasn't moved."
"Roger that." However, I had to make a decision quick as our plan was starting to un-ravel."All ships in Ingunn, warp to Ichiro and assist. Hyperion is primary. All ships in Gusandall, we have a camp in front of us. Blast through and into Ingunn. Go. Go. Go." With the decision made, the ships all moved. I was in a neighbouring system so avoided the camp as the initial plan was the hit the BS gate camp from multiple directions but it didn't matter now. Ichiro and Redbad were in trouble. As I was in mid-warp to Ichiro's last position, there was a final communication from Ichiro.
"Ichiro down. Ichiro down. Fuck."
"I have a point on the hyperion." That was Muhaar in his lachesis, along with RealZonk and Redbad. "We're attacking the hyperion! Someone get points on the hurricane."
"Hyperion is primary, I will have points on the cane. " I replied as I burst out from warp. A quick scan revealed that these two ships were from Red Alliance and the Hyperion pilot had a hand in killing my 'cane yesterday at the Eifer gate. Revenge would be sweet.
"Hurricane pointed." Just as Redbad's stabber blew up from the close-range fire of the enemy hurricane. Cursing, I opened up with my own rack of 425mm ACs and blasted at the enemy.
"Redbad is down. Redbad is down." The hyperion however exploded at the same time as Redbad made his exit from his stabber. Jubes arrived in his solo cane and with RealZonk and the others free from engaging the hyperion. We very quickly killed off the enemy cane, I even managed to snag the pod of the pilot and giving him a free trip home.

Once the dust had settled and Ichiro and RedBad docked up, the circumstances of this fight made sense. The Hyperion and Hurricane were complete wildcards and had managed to scan down and break open Ichiro's and Redbad's safe spot in Ingunn while they waited for the rest of the pirate fleet to be ready to tackle the gate camp. They came in behind us from the direction of evati. We did not expect that attack but responded well. Not too sure how Ichiro's Astarte succumbed to the hyperion and hurricane's firepower - though there is suspicion of the use of a webber or target painter on Ichiro.

Meanwhile, the enemy BS camp had moved once Deathstar came through but did not pursue and eventually disappeared.

Bah.

Fleet Canes for the win!

Busy, busy here but this day, my heart is still thumping from an encounter that will go down as one of the most intense experiences so far.

As ever, there were pirates of various persuasions in the independence channel as well as Black Flag pilots. A predominantly Black Flag fleet was setup with all the BF pilots in the specially modified BF Fleet Hurricane, a product of much research and development led by Viper Sam.

The fleet included: Jubes, Viper Sam, Muelac and myself in the fleet canes, Inglorfin (wolf) Sal (deimos) and Spiderus (hyperion). Inglorfin was ahead and scouted for us and we knew that there was sizeable fleet from the Russian Coalition between Gultratren and Arnstur. Inglorfin provided up to date intel on what ships were coming in and out. Spiderus was bait and jumped in on Inglorfin's word. The Russian Coalition had the following ships: two dominix class battleships, a stiletto, a drake, a thorax, a rupture and a harbringer-class battlecruiser. An equal fleet to ours but we felt that a decisive strike at the two dominix class ships should shatter them. Also, we were sure that this fleet knew of our presence and intention. No matter, it will not save them.

Spiderus jumped into Arnstur and found no-one in the gate but Inglorfin had now vectored him towards the Brin star gate. Spiderus turned his ship round and moved off into space. Inglorfin stayed about 100km from the gate, ready to update the vital intelligence that would win this contest. A few minutes later, the communication channel squawked.
"Stiletto and Dominix now at the gate. Stiletto now jumping into Gultratren." So, the Russian Coalition were sending in a scout. We were off the gate now and aligned and ready to pounce. "Dominix has jumped in as well." Spiderus chimed in.
"Coming back to the gate and jumping through. Maybe the domi will follow me once I am through?"
"Affirmative. Go ahead. Fleet align." That was Viper getting the four hurricanes ready. The ship's engine rumbled as the battle-cruisers slid into position. Spiderus jumped through and locked the waiting dominix and then engaged.
"Jump to me," said Spiderus as the trap was being sprung."I am under sentry gun fire. Engaging Dominix."
Meanwhile, Inglorfin was checking on the other side.
"You have incoming. The Dom was bait. I see their fleet inbound on your position. " There was a dramatic pause. "Gate fire! Gate fire! They're coming through!" We clicked once on the comm channels to confirm and we were in mid-warp.
"Hurry, am surrounded!"
"Hold on Spiderus. We're on our way." I said, putting my ship to red alert. All four hurricanes burst out around Spiderus in bright flashes. Our overviews filled with enemy ships. We had to engage them and incur sentry gun fire but that didn't bother us. We wanted our fill of blood and our pound of flesh.
"Primaries Sam! Primaries!" I yelled as I locked all the ships; we needed to target one ship to maximise our firepower however and our fleet commander had not yet allocated targets.
"The Harbringer!" Came the reply. Fuck, which one was that?
"Names, Sam! We need names!" I opened fire on the nearest target, a drake-class battlecruiser piloted by 'Malenkiy'. I was hoping I wasn't too harsh on our FC.
"Primary is Kelev. Primary is Kelev!" Good, I had Kelev's Harbringer already locked and knowing the names of targets was easier for everyone. I switched all my 425mm ACs on and hammered at the harbringer. So did the rest of the fleet. The Russian Coalition had two dominix class battleships and they spat out angry T2 drones. They screamed towards us. All their other ships locked us and fired. I had no idea who was primaried on our side. I glanced at my watch list.
"Help Spiderus!"
"Roger." That was Muelac, languid as usual but deadly efficient. We started to repair Spiderus' shields as we volleyed Kelev's Harbringer into scrap.
"Next target?" I said, well aware that we were a touch too slow on the target calling.
"Domi is primary. White Don. White Don!" Got it. I had White Don on lock and sent another volley of Hail towards him. Meanwhile, Spiderius's hyperion was being rocked back and forth but it's shield damage was almost repaired. Lucky for Spiderus as he was in structure already when the repairs began. White Don's Domi had neutralisers and was sucking the cap dry on Viper Sam. Just as he started taking in damage. I switched my repairer from Spiderus to Viper. Then the rupture and drake started to target me. My shields shimmered as it absorbed the energy of the rounds. Not too worried, I concentrated on the domi, now on fire, spewing atmosphere and fuel and unable to repair quick enough as four hurricanes tore it to pieces. Our hail rounds punched gaping holes in it's hull and it exploded to the cheers of the crews on our ships.
"Primary: Dobriy Ya. Secondary: Malenkiy." Target calling was coming quicker and the second dominix died under our guns. It's structure twisting under the intense heat of internal explosions. Jubes was under fire as was I from the sentry guns and the enemy drake but the rest of the fleet, nimble as ever had provided support to us. The drake's shield systems were overwhelmed by the HAIL and EMP rounds and then the rupture and thorax followed, burst open in a ball of light and sound. We killed them almost like an afterthought. In all this, we had lost Sal's Deimos. Stupidly, no-one had him on their respective watch lists and we were unable to see his damage until it was too late. He took gate gun fire, some T2 drone damage and possibly, the drake missiles.

The area around the gate was strewn with sparkling wreckage and flash-frozen bodies. Aimless drones drifted around, opportunity locking anything as it's AI mind tried to follow it's last commands of it's dying overseer.

The final tally was impressive: two dominix, harbringer, thorax, rupture and drake died to us for the loss of one deimos.

It was a good kill and our featured hurricane setup, a centre-piece of all Black Flag fleets performed superbly well. We looted and salvaged what we could and lept to our safe spots. Still drunk on adrenaline we wanted more and more targets. However, the Gods of New Eden decided we had had enough.

Oh well.

A day later, I decided that my thirst still needed quenching. I tackled and killed a thrasher and a phoon and a caracal (two) of them.

Watch out for concord!!

Right - a busy day and not that much time to record but a Black-Flag gang was set up and went roaming all the way down to Amamake. We had a few scouts racing ahead (I was one) but the meat of the fleet were three specially configured hurricanes. Deadly ships, solo but when configured in the Black Flag special way, they would become deadly things.

So the gang roamed and Nightmare is proving to be the joker though no one can doubt his skill and intent...he justs makes it a habit to tell everyone about it. Viper is a good FC and once we were in Amamake - Blade and I went in to seek out worthy opponents and no-one was biting, yet. Snake Boy had also arrived so we proceeded to drop some scan probes and see what we could see. The three other hurricane pilots stayed put in the neighbouring system, chomping at the bit.

Amamake was busy. Probes were dropped by the other pilots to find suitable targets. From observations we estimated at least three different gangs were around in Amamake. All hunting no doubt. All hunting for each other. However, we waited in an obvious belt and may be our nonchalant presence shouted out 'BAIT' to everyone else. Nothing happened.

Blade and I split up - he was in a Myrmidon and I was in my jaguar. Tempting targets no doubt. It was Blade who tickled their interest.
"I think I have something Flash." He said calmly over our voice comms.
"ID?"
"Vagabond and something else."
Viper jumped into the conversation, "We have to get webs on that sucker."
"I have a web but we probably need more. " I replied, now aligning to Blade's position. I quickly hit the scanner on my ship and I also noticed another blip: a jaguar-class assault frigate and a vengance. They were close to me and probably vectoring in. At this moment we still had no intelligence on what cloaked ships were hiding in the system, this being Amamake, chances are there were at least three or four of these sneaky ships. I warped to Blade, hoping that the two enemy assault frigates would follow me and ending up with Blade's Myrmidon and his vagabond adversary. Once the party began, we would call in the heavy guns in the form of Nightmare, Viper and Jubes.
"They're close. Very close." Said Blade, excitement now creeping into his voice. I confirmed it with my own scan during my warp. "Shit. Contact! Contact! Contact!" Yelled Blade.
I burst out of warp and landed 10KM from the elongated shape of his myrmidon, a vagabond was streaking past us - its microwarpdrive pulsing. He was throwing AC shells at Blade, I hit the scrambler and webber and snagged him.
"I have one point on vagabond." I turned and tapped into our fleet comm's channel a single 'x'. An unambiquous signal for the hammers to come down, hard and heavy. On the otherside of the system, a star-gate flashed and three, arrow-shaped Hurricane-class battlecruisers materialised. It was Nightmare, Viper and Jubes and they all aligned then activated their warp drives and jumped to my exact position.

Bring the pain.
I thought with some glee.

Unfortunately, in the instant the 'x' was sent, a jaguar and a vengance assault frigate came into view and locked me. I had a point (just) on the speedy vagabond but turned my guns onto the vengance as my ship shook under their combined fire.

My GUI struggled to update me as missile fire, auto-canon shell bombardment and lasers filled my vision. My shields were stripped down and I had to quickly activate my armour repairer. I replied in kind, choosing the vengance as my target - Blade had meanwhile, also locked the Jaguar and was hitting it hard. I was now webbed and couldn't move but I was getting on top of the vengance. The three hurricanes appeared and Nightmare, seeing that I was in danger of dying got a shield transfter to me - saving my ship from destruction. I re-loaded and pummeled the vengance when it turned and warped away. No one had a point on it, mine was still on the vagabond now orbiting at a 20km distance from Blade. The Jaguar, who was hitting me - exploded as Blade's weapon systems smashed it apart.

The vagabond was too fast and with three new Hurricanes, it turned and ran. No sooner had it gone, a sleipnir appeared. A feared command ship based on the cyclone hull. It would make a fine kill for us. However it was over 55km away and probably thought it would be safe. How wrong it was, of the five ships (six including Snake in his Cheetah) - the hurricanes were the fastest. Jubes, turned on his microwarpdrive and slammed his ship into space, eating up the distance in chunks. Nightmare and Viper did the same. I could only toggle my afterburner and struggle at 800m/s - poor Blade couldn't ever do that.

The sleipnir pilot must have looked on shocked as the hurricanes got within scramble then web distance within ten seconds, too quick for him to align and get the hell out of there. The hurricanes tore the sleipnir to fiery pieces within seconds. I didn't even get close to get a point to him as I was 35Km when the command ship blew up. The pod got away but what a kill.

The Sleipnir was fast but the 'canes were faster.

We celebrated the kill with much cheering and prepared for more combat but nothing then happened. Snake and I scouted around and there was definite movement in ships and pilots, as most people now had decent intel on our ships and locations. So we decided to move out and roam some more while heading back home. Snake and I raced ahead.

Then disaster struck.

Viper warped the fleet, now joined by Nozarro to a high-sec gate and the pirates found themselves in the warm embraces of concord! There were cries of horror and disbelief. I could only listen helplessly as Concord webbed and scrambled Jubes, Viper and Noz and pumelled their 'canes into wrecks. NIghtmare, to his credit, managed to save his cane and get back into low-sec. He then proceeded to chid his other fellow pilots on how to avoid concord. Endlessly. I had to chuckle.

A successful night, where the ships were tested ended with the almost total destruction of the fleet! At least I managed to get home in one piece but Viper, to his credit promised a full replacement for all ships and items lost.

What a night.

Welcome to EIFER

I love probe scanners. Love them and they made two of today's marks possible. Black Flag is growing as is the Independence channel with pilots forming mixed gangs as and when required to go after juicy prey. This is how it should be in my view.

Lord Moom was in his ratting raven in Gusandall. We had three probers in the gang and they threw scan probes all over the system in order to get a hit. It was Keira who got the hit after all the probers were patiently tracking down the raven pilot. It took almost 15 minutes before we had a successful hit. Well done to Keira!

Landing on Keira, we discovered the hidden gate and the fleet proceeded in; my heart pounding. Prediction Pain was her Falcon and sneaked into the first level, first. It was empty and the rest of the fleet followed in, shoving aside the spluttering wrecks of destroyed Angel ships. Prediction then jumped into the second level and once again threw on a cloak. She disappeared and the rest of the fleet, now about 6 strong waited. Impatiently.

"Raven is tackled. I have points on him. Warp In! Warp In!" Cried Prediction. With a roar, the fleet activated the gate and flooded in. The raven was there - ensnared and twisting like a trapped feral animal. We opened up on him and took it down to armour in an instant. A ransom demand was made but was rejected so we proceeded to dismantle the raven in the most brutal fashion. It felt good. So very good. Unknown to us, the pilot of the raven realising his predicament decided to offer a 200m ransom, however he rejected our initial conversation and no one was paying too much attention to the local chat channel. The raven pilot was then podded back to his clone.

We were then vectored into another well known area for mission runners and our scanner went to task. However, we were a little bit too slow this time and by the time we arrived at the hidden mission gate and into the first level, the two mission runners: a dominix battleship and a drake were warping out - their own missions now complete. Cursing our luck we headed back home; Jubes lagged behind and this proved to be fortuitous as he spotted a drake-class battlecruiser. I got back to help and we ended up tackling the beast. I was made primary but thanks to Jubes quick thinking - he activated a shield transfer array on me and kept me alive long enough for both of us to destroy the drake. We missed the pod however.

What is funny is that we tackled and killed a stabber - with a FinFleet pilot in it. We cheered as it was our first BoB kill.....little did we know that the pilot was leaving BoB....and joining us. What an introduction!

I suppose one can assume its an initiation rite?

Lost two caracals. Not happy - shall I pack for range or points?

Here I was, in my jaguar and enjoying the new GUI when I spotted a caracal. It was a known belt-ratter and I had killed him before. He was very skittish and never hung around long enough to loot the wrecks. Instead, he would cruise the belts in a seemingly random pattern and knock out the juiciest Angel cruisers and battlecruisers.

Like I said, I had killed him before and this time, as soon as he was aware of my presence - he would bolt. So it would be a tricky hunt but this is part of the fun and after chasing him, I discovered that his seemingly random belt ratting was not - there was a pattern and I managed to crack it after chasing the fool over twelve systems. Each time, missing him by mere seconds. I would arrive just as he would warp out. By studying his vectors, I gave chase only for him to be exiting as I arrive. Fun for a while, but irritating over time.

After the 13th or 14th system jump, I gambled and based on his previous pattern, I jumped ahead of him. Seconds later he landed on me. I grinned with satisfaction and on came the warp disruptor II. My auto-canons spat out destructive EMP rounds and yes, it was going to be a good kill. I love these ratting caracals. Just love 'em!

However, Hhairsenk (the caracal pilot) was slamming missiles into me with gusto. Now this jaguar was configured in the 'classic' shield tank setup. Basically a named Medium Shield extender and an invulnerability field. I switched on the latter as I had no armour repairer on. My capacitor went down as the shield module came on, drinking deep into my energy reserves to slake it's thirst. This was dangerous and in hindsight, I should have not installed it let alone activate it.

Yes, you all guessed it. My cap ran out. My disruptor - already slaking it's thirst for energy since the beginning of the engagement, turned off as it was now starved of energy. The caracal, burst out from under me, racing for the nearest star gate. The cruiser was down to about 15% hull, one more shot from ANY of my guns would have done it. However, it ran and got away from me. In frustration, I almost self-destructed the ship. Cursing myself for poor capacitor management, I could imagine what Hhairsenk was thinking.

I waited for the criminal countdown to end and ambled home. What did I see, yes - a thorax and a caracal. I chased the rax in the jaguar but he was having none of it and managed to get into high-sec space, leaving the caracal.

Using the scanner and selected overview settings, I quickly pinned him ratting in the IX-1 or IX-2 belts. I gunned the Jaguar into warp, wanting desperately to kill something. I landed amidst wreckage in the first belt and without pausing, jumped to the second belt - checking the wrecks as I was warping out to confirm that this second caracal was indeed ratting. In warp, I told myself that 'Cap is life, cap is life'.

Exiting the warp and landing on top of the caracal was pure joy. Once again, I locked quickly and started to hammer him. The caracal had decent shields but with EMP ammunition loaded, it made short work of it. I checked and rechecked that I had the disruptor on and that it had enough energy. The invulnerability field did not come on. Joy it was scrambled. It was going to die. It was.....

Stabbed.

The caracal turned and warped away to a belt at no armour. I blinked once and starred at my gui. Damn. Not enough points this time and I was one or two salvos from killing it.

Okay - from experience; once a ratter has survived an attempt like this. He gets cocky. Probably doesn't anticipate that I would come back with more points. I waited for 15 minutes and then jumped out. The caracal had been in system as well with me. I quickly docked up and switched to a Dark Blood scrambler, all 10KM range, 2-point goodness. That should be enough points but did I have the range?

I warped back into the target system and I saw SNURA in his harpy. Damn. He was hunting the caracal too. He had a blaster-harpy and I needed a webber to keep him out of range. I ducked out again and refitted a webber, dropping the invulnerability field and extender and going for a MAPC and a 400mm plate with SAR II. Back to armour tanking the jaguar.

Returning the belt, I saw the caracal flash past me! Snura was in local complaining about the stabbed caracal......NO! Apparently he had engaged the caracal but only had one point (or the caracal had x2 WCS) and this time the caracal had left local on fire. Much like last time.

I wanted Snura in his harpy and we tried to track each other - a little unsure who was the hunter and the hunted. However, eventually - he left local; either bored with me or cautious that I had help in the next system....which I did.

So ended a rather interesting, fun and frustrating day.

Now here comes DT.

3 Dec 2007

Hunting down a manticore isn't easy!

The hunting is the main thing, the chase, the scan, the anticipation and then the pounce. Especially, if one is chasing something that is designed to be stealthy and hidden; chasing it down is even harder but when (if) you get the kill - it does taste so sweet. So here I was in Eifer once more and the Independence channel had many new faces in it. Very happy to see old and new pilots alike and oddly, no Black-Flag pilots this time round.

I welcome all new pilots to the channel, so long as they are loyal to the Gank - then all is ok. MattCaladan and Nova Blackadder were in the channel and in local and we were hunting down some innocent pilots, completely oblivious to their imminent, fiery demise.

Spotting a thrasher - both Nova and I vectored to it. Due to a mix up, Nova warped and arrived at one cluster and I, at another. I was lucky. The thrasher was there, hovering over the still sparkling wreck of a destroyed Angel cruiser. No doubt, he was eager looting and salvaging the wreck. There is much money to be made.

Unfortunately for me, I had landed about 45km and was slamming my assault frigate into a tight turn and screaming towards him, afterburners pushing the weak-looking frame to its limits. I prayed to the various Gods to mask me, to make me swift like a hunting hawk, for a wave of confusion to confound him. My sudden appearance in his immediate vicinity must have given him a fright however, as he tore his thrasher-class destroyer out of the belt within a few seconds.

Disappointed, I tracked his ship and saw it was heading towards a gate.

Having some experience, I waited. No point in giving chase, I could at least check the wrecks. In the back of my mind, I also knew that for many pilots - losing a wreck or interrupting their salvage produces an almost irrestible urge to return. Sometimes within minutes. I have hunted prey like this for years. Patience I said to myself as I busied over the still smouldering wreck of another Angel cruiser. My automated salvage units removed some useful ammunition but that was all.

Glancing down at my system scanner, it was empty. No matter, I pulsed the engines and drifted quietly to the second of the Angel wrecks.

"Patience", I said, "patience."

Reaching the second, I checked the scanner. There was a blip. It was the thrasher and it was back and close by. Grinning, I had a familiar feeling building up inside me, a tingling and sharpening of my senses. Combat was imminent.

No doubt, the thrasher pilot had warped back to the planet and was scanning the belts and must have caught the tell-tale return of my wolf-class assault frigate. He also probably thought that his thrasher should be able to shred me and in some cases, I agree - if the thrasher could control the range of the engagement.

The thrasher came in and landed close to the wrecks - clever boy, he had bookmarked the wrecks before leaving. However, it meant he was now 2km from me. This was my kill-range and nothing dishes out pain like a fully-locked and loaded Wolf-class assault frigate.

On came the disruptor, pulsing and wrecking his warp core containment fields. My four T2 200mm ACs spat death in the form of EMP and Hail. Screaming and tearing into the shields of the thrasher. However, the destroyer replied in kind - it's eight turrets boomed out, and hit my wolf head on. I had zero transversal and took the full brunt of an eight-artillery barrage.

No matter. Shields and armour be damned. I wanted the kill and my third salvo punched into the hull and exploded the destroyer. He should have fitted auto-canons; he may have killed me sooner. I gleefully tracked the pod and killed the pilot. Disdaining the need to ransom him. Wasn't in the mood today. I looted the wreck and collected the sad looking remains of the pod pilot.

Throughout this fight, I was also aware that there was a manticore stealth bomber in the system. Chances are, the stealthy craft may have been tracking and watching me. Matt and Nova meanwhile, were doing their level best in tracking the manticore as well. I zipped to one of my usually scan spots and with one scan narrowed him down to a belt. Surely not?

I informed Nova and Matt to align to my ship when I was nearing the belt. Would the pilot be so bold I thought? Ever if i couldn't lock him, I would at least be able to identify the pilot.

"Align." I said in the Independence channel and I recieved affirmations from them both.

Coming out of warp, thin gossamer plasma streams trailing off my ship, my eyes spotted the distinctive, boxy shape of the Caldari stealth bomber. Instantly, I mentally ordered the targetting computer to lock onto the bomber. However, the computer was still re-aligning itself after it's journey through warp space and failed, I ordered it to lock, again and again as I also toggled the afterburner and my weapons to 'insta-fire' mode. My anger was rising as the computer failed to lock for the third time. The fourth attempt the targetting cursor was blinking steadily and in a second I had a lock. I was 25km away and my disruptor failed. I drew closer and the stealth bomber pivoted and started to move away. 24km and I wished I had fitted an expensive tech 2 warp disruptor. 23km and the stealth bomber melted away.

It had cloaked.

Cursing, I pushed my ship to it's last known location and proceeded to do a series of high speed orbits around him. Hoping to crash into him. However, it was no good. He had gone. I had no idea if he was in the belt, above me, below me or alongside me. No idea at all. I left the belt and went to a safe spot. At least I knew who the pilot was: 'MU Kurlyz'. I decided to access his Concord pilot profile. This happened a couple of times, coming close, so close. Frustrating.

Matt and Nova were still around. The manticore had re-appeared and both Matt and Nova zipped off to various belts to try and flush him out. It was an admirable effort and I was grateful for their work rate. Both would become good pirates given time. MU Kurlyz left local, probably wanting to avoid the attention of Matt and Nova. I checked his last known location and decided he went back to Gusandall and proceeded to go there with Matt and Nova holding station in Eifer.

Back in Gusandall, the local space was busy and yes, the manticore was back and on scan. Was he baiting me? I scanned him down to another belt and I banked on him warping not to 0km but a bit off it. Maybe I could get lucky? I warped in, modules toggled to 'insta-fire' mode. Bursting out of warp, I had caught the tell-tale trailers of a recently exited ship. He was in the VI-I belt. I spun the ship round and went to this belt. Cat and mouse indeed.

Exiting warp, I saw the stealth bomber but maybe he miscalculated as he was only 6km from me! I had to get an active lock and hit him with something to disable his cloak. Once again, the computer had problems with the target acquisition. Damn these old, useless Minmatar computers! Why not the latest Gallente or stolen Caldari technology?

The cursor then became a solid and I had a solid lock. It also told me that the manticore had done the same. My weapons and disruptor came on just as his heavy missiles slammed into my ship knocking it sideways. My systems blanked out for a second but the tough, no nonsense Minmatar chips refused to die and maintained lock. A more sophisticated computer would have rebooted. The EMP shells (I had switched all the ammunitions to the EMP variety) obliterated the manticore's shields in my first salvo. I had no shield left and the second missile salvo took me down to 85% armour. It was so quick that I had no time to even activate the armour repairer. However, we build our ships tough - unlike the now shield-less Manticore. The EMP munition, while designed to be anti-shield was still effective agains the thin armour of the Caldari and I was shocked to see the last shell of the second salvo blow the ship to smithereens.

Get the fecking pod! I thought to myself as I tried to lock the blinking egg-like capsule however, MU Kurlyz had already activated his drives and was gone.

In less than 8 seconds, the fight was over. The manticore now a unrecognised wreck amidst an expanding sphere of debris. Matt and Nova came in to help but the warp itself took over ten seconds so they missed out. I checked the loot and was delighted to see a Tech 2 Raltech Hidden-Eye Advanced Covert-Ops Cloaking device and a Tech 2 ballistic control unit.

Nice score.

There was also a large amount of Caldari Navy Issue Scourge missiles - I left them for Matt and Nova to pick up. I said 'Good fight' to the pilot but he had already left the system. No matter, the chase was thrilling and I love New Eden.

Concord fired off an evemail confirming the kill.

Nano-ishtars are a real pain.

Just wanted to check skills when I call rang out in the independence channel. It was Grunanaca, now flying under a new pirate flag: BL4CK FL4G and he needed help.

"Get your 'cane! Eifer. Enemy 'cane." He said, tersely. I checked my chrono and found that yes, indeed, I had exactly 32 minutes before a meeting so I undocked in my hurricane. It still had damage from that megathron engagement last night.

I joined fleet and found that Jack'Frost was also a member of BL4CK FL4G and there is an open offer for me to join them. An offer as I have mentioned in a previous blog, that I will take up - just not yet as I needed some time to fix the corp and move stuff around. But soon.

The fleet had an enyo (Jack'Frost), rapier (Grunanca) and my 'cane. More than enough to kill a single 'cane. As I jumped into the system, I discovered that the pilot ('Jiam') was from Nebula Rasa alliance, an entity whom we had some dealings with in the past. It was moving around and re-aligning so the pilot was skillful enough to know not to sit in one place for too long.

However, they had not figured on our tackler: Grunanca soon had a lock and vectored us in. As soon as I arrived, I found the hurricane was double-webbed by the rapier and taking fire from the recon and also fire from Jack'Frost's enyo. As soon as I arrived, I was chosen as primary by the 'cane. A sensible move since I was the biggest and probably the easiest to hit.

The fight was one-sided with only us the victors. Jiam had a good tank on the 'cane but as it entered hull, we all prepared to snag the pod. As a reminder to all to get some points on the soon-to-emerge hull would be the capsule. Jiam was a veteran and we would ransom him. I reminded everyone about the pod. Soon after, the battlecruiser exploded and the pod was visible. Jack'Frost was the only one who could realistically tackle the pod and he did and then podded the pilot.

Ah.

There was a comms breakdown as we wanted to ransom the pilot, as someone of his age would a) have money and b) probably have implants that he would like to keep.

No big deal however.

However, a known Anti-pirate came into the local system and tracked us down. He was in an ishtar and could anyone get close to him? Could we hell. Instead, the ishtar spewed out deadly T2 drones and tried to chew us up. He succeeded in destroying Nframa (rifter) who came in soon afterwards but was unceremoniously sent back in a pod to the nearby station.

A real pain but kudos to the pilot who knew what he was doing.

Next time we'll have to get our rapier on him.

Mining Op Interruption

I was out in the Jaguar and on my way home from a long and fruitless hunt when I spied a mining op of two retrievers and an escorting thrasher-class destroyer. All from the same corp (never heard of them) and jumped into a safe spot.

They had not moved and there was the welcome sign of a mining can.

Narrowing them down on my scanner I had them down to the third belt off the fifth planet. Excellent I thought to myself as the pickings had been quite slim. I warped to the belt and landed 80Km from their operation. No problem, I anticipated this and quickly book marked their can and warped to the nearby planet. On arrival, I whipped the ship around and warped back, this time towards the can. With luck I would be on top of the operation.

Exiting the warp - I crashed into one of the barges. I quickly locked all three, scrambling one of the retrievers and firing on the thrasher. The thrasher engaged me and as the second mining barge warped out. The scrambled barge probably tried the same but found his engines all scrambled. The thrasher meanwhile was being pummeled into scrap - it's thin armour no match for the T2 auto-canons on my jaguar. I had to juggle the distances between the thrasher and the scrambled barge. I had to keep the barge scrambled thus needed to be within 7.5km but I also needed to keep in my optimal range of the auto-canons to ensure that I could finish off the thrasher.

Then the thrasher turned his ship around and warped out.

LOL - some escort huh?

I concentrated on the barge and blasted it to hull and then decided to ransom the pod instead. Hopefully, it would drop one, maybe both strip miners. The ship exploded and out popped the egg. I had it scrambled and open up a conversation. Asking for some isk, my captive closed the window and blocked me. Well, taking that as a firm 'no' - I killed the pod and gave the mining pilot a free trip home to the cloning vats.

Now, with the criminal flag expired. I switched to the rifter for a change. I love that ship. Entering Eifer, I spied another two rifters - both pirates. These chaps were called 'A Death' and 'Hitoshiki'. I didn't know them and I was hoping that they would pluck courage to engage me; I would love a 2 v 1.

Nothing like engaging other pirates as all would be set up for combat and therefore would be a challenge. 2 v 1 would be even better.

So we danced around, trying to time our warp into the belts in order to intercept each other. There were plenty of targets and no doubt we both waited for each to engage before ambushing the entire group. After three minutes, I spotted a thrasher. Seconds later, I saw the two rifters in the same scan area. Narrowing it down to a belt and it was confirmed. Either the two pirates were engaging the thrasher or working together did not bother me. I hit the warp with a kill lust in my blood.

Bursting out into real space I landed in the middle of all three; I hit the lock button on all three. It appeared that the two new rifters were NOT engaging the thrasher. So a potential 3 v 1. Opening up on the first rifter (piloted by Hitoshiki) - I was trying to knock it out but kept a point on the thrasher. The other rifter whipped his craft round and warped out. Hitoshiki's rifter hit his afterburner and powered out of the fight leaving me with the thrasher. The fight was short and sharp but the thrasher could hit hard. The pilot was not a rookie but gave as good as he got. However, the rifter is tough and even with no capacitor - it can still dish out pain.

I was into armour but the repper was doing a superb job.

The pilot (MrValera) was in trouble and his pod popped out. Since we had two more pirates in local, I was nervous about the ransom so I decided to blow it up. Maybe I can chase the other rifters? Hitoshiki was still in the belt but was about 100km away - I think it was trying to get over 150km so it could warp back to me?

Whatever, the pod was destroyed and I gave chase.

The chase however was fruitless: the two pirates did not engage at all.

Pity.

16 Aug 2007

1 v 1 - should have been more careful.

I lost my rifter today after agreeing to a 1 v 1 with a pilot who then said 'going to get my destroyer' as he had clocked what I was flying already.

Ten minutes later, he was in a catalyst with 8x 125mm gauss prototypes and the mag stabs to match. Amazingly, I survived the salvo and got him down to 5% armour before I realised that I hadn't even switched on my third autocanon (and yes, it was the T2 one!!!).

I managed to hang on for a few more seconds and kissed his hull before I blew up.

Gah.

27 Feb 2007

Killing my first Geddon.

Determined to get more kills - I went back to Gusandall to see what was flying around. Oddly, no Blackfleet or MeanCorp or anyone for that matter. I have had some success in a the Todifrauan system in Metropolis. Its the base for many corps and many appear to mine there. Also, the place is hot with Angels so there are plenty of hunters there.

Lucius and I spent some time scanning and seeking out targets; as there were plenty and what looked like a major mining operation. We saw covetors and retrievers all guarded by Dominix, Scorpion and Caracal class ships. A bit tough for two frigates.

However, there were still plenty of ships around and we spotted a stabber and an armageddon that were working together in the belts around the VI cluster. Sensing an opportunity we split up and tried to pin them down. The primary target would be the stabber then the armageddon. We doubted the 'geddon would be able to track us unless it had NOS, SmartBombs and drones. The search for them was fun as both Lucius and I landed 100KM+ away from the pair a total of five times. It was clear to us that they knew were were around. However, we took advantage of a mistake they made: they passed a secured can and we bookmarked the can and warped back to it a suitable distance, screaming in and landing within 10km of the pair. Snarling, Lucius and I hurled our ships closer and tried to scramble the stabber - amazingly it warped off before we got close enough. Looks like both Lucius and I had 7.5km scramblers. I normally fly with a 20km disruptor but not this time.

We engaged the armageddon instead, the golden hulk gleaming and reflecting the system's red giant sun dully. The Armageddon presented its broadside and unleashed the heavy pulse lasers. Ruby lances of light flashed by. The punisher's own collision avoidance system banked the ship to one side as it regarded the destructive energy lance as another ship.

With the private independence channel alive with chatter, Lucius and I co-ordinated our attack. Scramblers came on - all four points worth and completely locking the battleship down. We started firing our small sized weapons; compared to the large destructive lances - they were a mere spittle. However, they scored hit and after hit.

The battleship pilot realising the folly of using the large lasers went to his other option: drones. Sure enough, small blisters on the ship irished open and heavy berserker class drones slid out. Their eyes swivelling into position and locking on us.

"Drones, Lucius."
"I see them."

We quickly re-directed our fire towards the deadly war machines and proceeded to pop them. They were designed as sluggers and to go after slower cruisers and larger craft, not nimble frigates. The drones were duly popped and we returned our fire at the armageddon.

The stabber then warped back in and landed on top of me. Lucius and I quickly split our targets: Lucius would maintain lock on the armageddon while I would try and take out the stabber. I switched my scrambler towards the sleek Minmater cruiser and redirected the fire from the three 200mm ACs at him. The small nosferatu also came on to supplement my capacitor. The stabber captain desperately tried to track me but I was too fast, even for the feared stabber-class cruiser; well known as a deadly anti-frigate platform.

My EMP shells ate into his shield. His only effective hits were from his missile launcher and the occasionally hit from his medium autocannons. I tanked and avoided his fire but realised that I was drifting further and further away from Lucius and the Armageddon. I called out to Revivor to get his rifter down here pronto. The blue-skinned babe duly obliged and informed us that she was ten jumps away.

Meanwhile, the stabber fight was going badly for the cruiser captain - he was down to 50% armour but started to pull away from me. He had a micro-warpdrive and even in the fast punisher, I had trouble closing the distance. Once out of scramble range, he warped.

I then made my way back towards Lucius' fight - now over 80km away. I warped back out and in on Lucius and minutes later, the stabber came in again. Once again, I peeled off to take the stabber and once again, he warped off once he was down to 50% armour. It was an effective tactic preventing me from adding my firewpower to Lucius but Revivor was only 2 jumps away and would swing the battle our way.

The stabber didn't turn up the third time so i once again, locked myself into a 2000m orbit and switched on the 200mm ACs. The damage readout on the armageddon was showing 80% armour and falling slowly. Revivor screamed in and added her firewpower to mine and Lucius. The armageddon captain must have been horrified at this.

Slowly, but surely the mighty armour of the Armageddon-class battleship was being drilled with thousands of ragged holes from our small projectiles. Atmosphere now venting out into space and fires burning in various places. Another three minutes and the armour was all but gone - most of it spinning off into space, burning and molten. Already, the crew was abandoning the ship, life pods as thick as rain flying away from the doomed ship.

We wanted the Captain.

The hull creaked and groaned and finally split after a final salvo. The Captain's pod appeared and it is only fitting that the Captain goes down with his ship. The concentrated fire of nine 200mm ACs blew the adamantium shell of the capsule to pieces.

My first ever Battleship kill.

The stabber never returned.

There were cheers from our own crews and we congratulated each other on a fine job. The wreckage and loot was disappointing but the thrill of the kill was all. We flew to a nearby planet to re-group.

While the cheering had not even died - a stabber came into view. We thought, 'its him again'. However, a closer examination revealed a different Captain and my readouts flashed out that it was Zelgris - who piloted a ferox and had taken out my third punisher a week ago.

We wanted revenge.

The stabber was hit hard by both me and Lucius. However, the stabber managed to escape just as Revivor arrived. It sped off but Lucius was hot on his heels having quite quickly figured out where Zelgris was heading too (warp to 0 to planet FTW!).

We chased the stabber for another two planets before locking him down and pummelling the stabber into scrap. The pod escaped and Zelgris disappeared from local. His pod was still there on the scanner.....logoffski???

Ferox kill

Still flushed from the success of taking out the Hurricanes, I wanted more. As soon as I logged there was a gang that had already formed to hunt BlackFleet pilots. I was in Eifer and there were some [M W] and [RLE] pilots as well as the usual independent contractors. Lucius was in his rupture and Revivor in his rifter. I piloted the stabber and Lucius had got the attention of a BlackFleet Ferox and had him pinned at the Gusandall side of the Eifer stargate. We all jumped and quickly engaged the two Blackfleet pilots. I aimed my stabber at the ferocious ferox and hit it with the NOS and the four dual-180mm Autocannos. The sprang to life and started to spit out EMP shells out in a satisfyingly fast stream. They flared off the ferox's shield and combined with the firepower of the other gang, ate into the armour of the ferox. It was blasted into scrap.

A second Blackfleet Vexor was sitting there - the pilot was relatively new and had a positive security rating and was protected by the sentry guns. I didn't care as I turned on the NOS and the four dual-180mm autocannons, still hot from the previous exchange.

As soon as I opened fire, the automated response from the sentry gun controller informed me that they would take action against me. By the time the sentence was completed, the vexor was down to armour. I started to align to my safe spot as I needed to perform a quick getaway. The sentry gun muzzle's flashed and lasers and projectiles screamed towards me. The first salvo missed me as I continued to pummel the vexor. The vexor pilot, either too surprised or scared didn't do anything. At least he was smart enough not to fire.

The sentry guns recalibrated for me and then started to score hits, small at first but increasing the damage with each second. The vexor was down to less than 40% armour when I hit the warp engines. He was down to 20% armour when I warped out.

I had 10% hull left.

I waited out my criminal flag and docked.

Called it a day.

23 Feb 2007

Hurricane Season!

I was bored and decided to check out the kill mails that I had accumulated over the last few months and it is over 200. A few were ship losses of my own and since I insist on flying frigates and with a 6million isk bounty; I do get a lot of attention.

More power to the bounty collectors I say, so long as they engage - I don't care. Also realised that while a T1-fitted rifter is a lot of fun, I do need something that can hit even harder so I am faced with either getting a Jaguar (drool) or fitting a new rifter with T2 kit.

Decided that I would do both but I also realised that I am using the punisher more and more; slowly I am refining the 'Bleeder' setup and understanding the ins and outs of this ship. Sure, it has been pwned a few times but it was always from ships with T2 guns or very fast firing ships. Need to be a bit smarter in using the tough little Amarr frigate.

I loaded up on ammo - opting for three-quarters EMP and one-quarter Phased Plasma and undocked into the vastness of space. The station slowly receeded as I increased the sub-light engines and pushed out into space. I check the local com-net and there were a few pilots. I took a chance and snapped on the scanner, just in case a few were around in the belts. After a minute or two - it was clear that the three local pilots (x1 battleship, x1 battle-cruiser and x1 frigate) were all in safe spots: deep areas of space away from any warpable celestial objects.

Sighing, I popped in the co-ordinates of the next system and fired up the warp engines. I have to admit, the Punisher has nice clean lines and makes a change from the Rifter. Of course, the deadly rusted Rifter is still my ship of choice but change is good. I arrived and recieved immediate clearance to jump into the next system.

Arriving in Eifer, I hit the scanner again - the local comnet was quite busy so potential for targets I thought. I hit the scanner and waited for the return. Finding nothing, I quickly hit the warp engines and arrived at my secondary scan spot. Sure enough, the scanner came back with solid returns. Narrowing the angle down, I spotted a Republic University pilot in a burst-class frigate. Not much of a challenge but I needed to warm up the guns.

I hit the warp engines and the frigate leapt into the warp. I could feel my heart start to beat faster as I neared the belt, adrenaline coursing through my body and feeling a touch-light headed. I hit the scanner mid-way to ensure that the target was still in front of me and yes, it was. The ship sensed my eagerness for the kill and hurled itself out of the warp tunnel and into normal space, thin plasma streams trailing off the ship's sleek golden frame.

The sweet, sweet overview return of a white cross made me grin with fierce joy. All hunters will know the feeling of excitement of seeing a target icon appear in the ships overview. I hit the afterburners as soon as the navi-computer was sorted out and closed the distance. The Burst class frigate was 25km away and I had a long-range 20km disruptor. I had to close the 5km gap before the pilot could get out.

23km and I hit the targetting computer - it cycled through it's lock very quickly. A long tone indicated a successful lock but the I was still 21km away. I prayed that the last km would be rewarded with a snared ship and not me chasing after plasma trails. The computer maintained its lock and the distance ticker read 18km and dropping.

On came the disruptor and he was mine - the burst-class frigate suddenly became aware of me and tried to pull away but I had the velocity and closed to within 9km and opened fire. The ship's shields flared brightly as my EMP shells spat out of the 200mm ACs. Soon I was chewing into his armour as the burst tried to fight back. The armour peeled off in glowing strips and the vulnerable and soft hull was exposed. The pilot was too young to have any money but his clone would be cheap. I quickly slammed two more shells into his hull and his pod ejected out. Calmly, I targetted the blinking pod and sent the Republic University back to his cloning vats.

A kill was a kill and I was warmed up.

Of course, the burst was a snack really I wanted more. I swept the area for more potential victims but they had all finally found a dark, deep hole to safely hide. If only I had a wing mate with scanner probes. Grumbling a bit I jumped through a number of gates after my criminal flag had expired.

One of my regular hunting buddies came back to the same area and we greeted each other. Lucius Cain is a pilot with SNIGGWAFFE but outside of corp operations, we fly with each other and other likely minded pilots; all frigate pilots and all looking to misbehave. We spotted for each other calling out targets in each system and assessing the likely success of a joint operation. He was in his trusty rifter while I still flew the punisher.

Lucius called out a hurricane-class battlecruiser had arrived into Gusandall so we decided that this would be a nice test of the two-frigate combo.

flashfresh > Phantom Sulker in 1-1
Lucius Cain > heh
flashfresh > he's moved
Lucius Cain > want to try him?
flashfresh > ofc
flashfresh > I always die to canes
Lucius Cain > Booyah :D
flashfresh > he's moved though
Lucius Cain > Try IV - 1
flashfresh > k
Lucius Cain > Warping

Lucius had tracked down and engaged the battlecruiser pilot and called me in.

flashfresh > laaagg
Lucius Cain > He's here
flashfresh > In warp
Lucius Cain > 20km away

I arrived within 10 seconds and landed a mere spitting distance away from the bulk of a hurricane battlecruiser. A rifter was in a tight orbit around the hurricane; there was a faint blue glow of an activated web around the battlecruiser - reducing it's velocity and transversal to a crawl. This made the beast easier to hit.

I hit the afterburners and pushed the punisher into a 2000m orbit and engaged the 200mm AC and the small nosferatu. The EMP projectiles screamed out and smashed and flared off the hurricane's shields.

My disruptor came on and with the nosferatu firmly engaged, I settled into destroying the hurricane's shields. Throughout this time, the Hurricane captain tried to fight back but he had the wrong weapons: too big to track small ships. He also lacked a nosferatu or even drones. However, his shields were ten times that of ours and I could only hope that the 6ooo rounds of EMP ammunition was enough.

His shields did go down however, as they could not last forever.

We knew we had him.

Soon the readouts were showing armour damage; I switched one of the 200mm ACs to phase plasma and continued to pummel the hurricane's armour - armour that was peeling off in white-hot stripes and spinning off into space. I could imagine the panic on board the ship as internal fires started to erupt and the klaxons blaring away at failed shield generators. No matter, I wanted the kill and to see what it was carrying.

The armour was soon gone, it was venting atmosphere and the hull's integrity was severly compromised. Still no word from the Captain but Lucius and I decided to ransom the pod as we both wanted a Hurricane kill to our names.

The Hurricane was in its death throes - it was still firing at us but it had seconds to live, Lucius and I were merciless and destroyed the ship. I howled in delight as debris flared off my shields, the explosion was a bright flash that vapourised two small asteroids. The Captain's pod was visible and both Lucius and I attempted to lock it but to our amazement, it jumped into warp instantly. The few remaining crew in their own life boats were ignored.

The captain opened up a conversation to me:

Phantom Sulker > I will find you and kill you when you are not with your buddy.

Great. Bring it on.

Concord confirmed the kill:

The loot from the wreckage was so-so, nothing T2-wise but plenty of ammo. Shame I haven't got a salvager here, one could make quite a bit of isk from the scrap floating round here.

Lucius and I congratulated each other on a good kill - a first I think for us both.

We both waited for the criminal flag to expire and then went out to seek more prey.

I found Ashval in a rifter this time and shaking my head in disbelief I warped into him his belt and killed him. He was understandably very pissed at me but I did tell him that he was in low-sec and that no-one was safe. I didn't pod him as I felt guilty - don't want him to hang up his pod controls and go back to being a planet-bound pleb now could I?

In the next system, I spotted a vagabond heavy assault cruiser. Never went after a HAC before but flushed with success I called out to Lucius who duly responded with a firm 'yes' on engaging the vagabond. He docked to fit double webbers and a MWD while I maintained an overwatch on the vagabond. He was moving from belt to belt in rapid succession - no doubt looking for victims.
However, Lucius informed me that as he as undocking from Gusandall - he spotted yet another Hurricane-class battle cruiser. Deciding that a second kill would be good, we decided to engage the new targer. Lucius went to engage it immediately while I fired up the warp engines and made the two jumps back to Lucius' position.

flashfresh > Second cane today I hope
Lucius Cain > V- 1
flashfresh > omw
Lucius Cain > I don't have scram
flashfresh > YAAARRR
flashfresh > I have 1pt
Lucius Cain > Hurry
flashfresh > In warp
Lucius Cain > Man, now i'm the damn Noob

I warped in and saw the familiar shape of a hurricane-class battle cruiser. It was double-webbed by Lucius but not scrambled. I got into range and hit a tight orbit and hit the disruptor.

flashfresh > Scrambled for one.
Lucius Cain > Get a point on him and you're an angel.
flashfresh > I have.
Lucius Cain > *phew*

Once again, this Hurricane pilot did not fit a medium nosferatu or any other anti-frigate defence. We attacked the hurricane much like before and soon her shields flared off in a bright flash and we pounded at her armour.

Lucius Cain> 'Cant believe our luck. Two hurricanes in such a short time!'
Flashfresh> 'Yah'

Then the hurricane fired up it's warp engines and left us alone.

Flashfresh> 'WTF?'
Lucius Cain > DO you know that sound when the tea pot starts boiling?
flashfresh > wtf?
Flashfresh> 'Damnnit, stabs....but it's still in-system. No wait, its docked. Damn.'
Lucius Cain> ' Well, at least we got one kill. Might need to refit this rig and put the scrambler back in. Damn it!'
Lucius Cain > Well that sucked... Talk about anti-climax.

Both of us were unhappy but congratulations to the Hurricane pilot for fighting as long. Warp Core Stabiliser do gimp most pilots setups so he was willing to take this hit. No matter. However, it was clear as Lucius and my criminal timer was counting down that the hurricane pilot was still docked. The to our amazement, he undocked and warped to another belt. We were torn between re-engaging him again, as with his single WCS - he negated my single, one-point warp disruptor. It would be a waste of ammo and worse, he probably refitted with specific anti-frigate weapons.
Still, we realised that he had undocked and was continuing to rat. We both looked up at our timers and we each had 6 minutes left.

Lucius Cain> 'This is the worst moment in EVE for me....'
Flashfresh> ' Yeah. Goddamnit - this timer is so slow. We need to refit and re-engage the 'cane!!!'
Lucius Cain> 'I know mate, I know!!!'

The timer was glacial as we prayed that the 'cane pilot would stay outside. Maybe it was waiting for us?

We also noticed that a taranis-class interceptor had also undocked. Lucius, in another scan spot then cried out:

Lucius Cain> 'Taranis has engaged the Hurricane'
Flashfresh> 'OK - we re-engage and take out the Inty. The inty pilot is a pirate anyways. Don't engage the Hurricane - wait until your global timer is out.'
Lucius Cain> 'Roger. Let's go.'

We both warped and landed a short distance from a furious fire-fight between the Interceptor and the Hurricane. The taranis was indeed piloted by a pirate (-9.6) so we engaged him and with Lucius' double-webber rifter - we killed the interceptor in short order. The pod escaped though.

Now it was round two: I had the Hurricane scrambled once more and orbitted around him, he threw heavy missiles at me but I could easily tank his damage. Lucius's global criminal flag finally expired and he quickly made his exit towards the station. I had to maintain contact with the hurricane. It was tricky though: I had to do enough damage to make him fight me, take enough damage so that he would stay long enough for Lucius to dock, refit with a 2 point scrambler and undock and rejoin the fight.

Gah.

I turned my armour repairer off and took the damage - hopefully this would force the Hurricane to stay for his 'kill'.

I was down to 35% armour and he was down to 10%, I had one single 200mm AC on him now, having turned off the other two.

Just as Lucius undocked with a new scrambler - the hurricane hit warp again.

Flashfresh> 'Shite. He warped out.
Lucius Cain> ' Nooooooo'
Flashfresh> ':-('
Flashfresh> 'Safespot, as local is beginning to fill up'
Lucius Cain> 'Roger. Shame we missed the second Hurricane kill'
Flashfresh> 'Yeah. We'll get our chance'

So we each zipped off to our own spots and waited.

Oddly, the hurricane Captain was still in local. I scanned and realised that he had docked. Then a thought occured to me. I voiced this to my partner:

Flashfresh> LC - you know, we could get a third shot at this 'cane.
Lucius Cain> Yeah?
Flashfresh> I think the fool has redocked to repair and I think he will come back out again. I mean we had two attempts to kill him and each time he escaped. Probably doesn't realise that you docked up to refit or even realised that we now know why we cant scramble him.
Lucius Cain> He cant be that stupid....
Flashfresh> Lets see....yes! he's undocked. Scan and find him!

We both quickly hit the scanners and let the machine do it's work. There! We located him at IV-2 and with a wary cry both Lucius and I pushed our ships into warp and hoped that the Hurricane was not running away.

Both frigates burst back into normal space, the entry bubble bursting like a supernovae and there it was: the same hurricane - fully repaired and shields back to 100%. No matter, unless it had refitted with another two warp core stabilisers - he was dead.

He re-targetted us, just as we did him - looks like he was eager for round three as much as we were. I locked and hit the disruptor and got into nosferatu range. My faithful 200mm ACs spat death in the form of screaming EMP projectiles. Lucius's guns also spoke the same deadly language.

The hurricane was frantically regenerating his shields and also, for the first time - hitting us with ECM. He was using the wrong one though on me but one cycle was sucessful.

Flashfresh> Careful! He is using ECM.
Lucius Cain> Roger.

We continued to orbit, weaving in and out of each other's orbits and dancing around the bright flashes of the Hurricane's medium autocannon projectiles. Without anything to slow us down, he had a hard time hitting us....however, the Captain hadn't been idle and in addition to a single ECM module - he also fitted a target painter and it was I who was illuminated.

His heavy missiles shook the punisher and my computer protested at the damage being caused, with an angry look I shut the automated messages off as I needed to concentrate on managing my capacitor and the repairer. Still, his damage was inconsistent and I managed to get on top of the damage and tank it.

Meanwhile, our furious onslaught had knocked the hurricane's shields down and we were once more drilling into its newly repaired armour. This time, there would be no escape. The ECM had also stopped and Lucius and I assumed that he was running low on capacitor energy. No matter, that was his problem.

The bloodlust was on me and I howled in delight as the shells started to bore into the hull. If the hurricane wanted to escape it would have tried by now and I could imagine the panic on the Captain's face as he realised that this time, he was stuck.

Lucius Cain> I think we have him!
Flashfresh> Yaaarrrrrr

The hull was now a smoking ruin, venting out fiery atmosphere and crew escape pods. The order to abandon ship was obviously given. We however, waited for the Captain's pod.

Lucius Cain> I want to pod him. He deserves it.

The hurricane shook as a length wise shudder ran through it and then in a bright flash it exploded in a bright multi-coloured flash. We saw the pod appear on our scanners and locked it. Both Lucius and I hit it with our ACs and it disappeared in a flash. The Captain was no more.

We searched the wreck but there wasn't much in it. No matter, it had been a good day for us. We managed to get some named medium autocannons and a T2 shield booster but it was the thrill of the chase and combat that we loved.

I had to dock and grab a beer while LC had to log.

We both agreed that it was a superb day. Long may these continue.

You win some and you lose some.....

Got another consignment of punishers.....I can't seem to get rid of them it would seem, so I went rummaging around the hangar and found enough bits and pieces to make another bleeder setup. I made a change and dropped a CPR for a damage control unit. I never seem to run out of cap before I die so why not make some changes? I also experimented with a few changes to the low slots but settled on the DCU variant.

Other setups (all variations in the low slots) included:

Variation one: x2 CPR, x1 200mm steel plate, x1 SAR
The standard Bleeder setup. Not bad but difficult against fast damaging opponents.

Variation two: x1 CPR, x1 200mm steel plate, x1 Damage Control Unit, x1 SAR
Dropping a CPR lowers the cap recharge rate but the DCU is very useful increasing the resists across the board.

Variation three: x1 CPR, x2 200mm Steel plate, x1 SAR
Increases the armour HP to 1500 and with the high resists; means it is a hard tanker.

Suitably tanked up I ventured out into my hunting grounds and stalked it. A few minutes later a rupture came into local. Oh yes, my heart beat faster as I checked out the information on the pilot. Still a RMS graduate but has been with them now for ten months. My goodness, is he having learning problems?

I wanted to test out the Bleeder against the rupture so was super-keen to take him out. It took me a few jumps before I found him, he left a trail of wrecks behind him so was easy to follow. I landed at 9Km from him and proceeded the scramble cycle. We exchanged fire but I then noticed that he was moving away from me: 1km, 3km, 5km - shite; he had a mwd installed and was pulling away from me. Partly my fault as I wasn't paying enough attention but I didn't want to get into a flat out race as my traversal would drop too low and his howitzers would tear me apart. I tried to re-orbit him but it was no good. From range, he started to hit while my trusty 200mm ACs failed to reach him.

Gah. I warped out and had to rethink my strategy. However, he left the system soon afterwards and I couldnot follow due to my criminal flag. Next time I need to be smarter as the bleeder doesn't have any webbers to slow fast ships down.

LC was busy in 0.0 with his corp mates but Revivor was back in town. I hooked up with her and we went hunting in Eifer. Local was busy and within a few moments, a rifter pilot - all cocky offered us a 1 v 1. Rozalina was her name and I admired her courage. Revivor and myself were hunting Rozalina, Underundertaker and threesixone but they were buzzing around the system like flies around crap.

We opted to wait for them to jump into a belt where we would be waiting. Within a few minutes, theesixone came screaming into the warp-in point in a freshly built rifter. Revivor and I proceeded to tear it to scrap. Revivor also podded the unlucky pilot.

Hmm decent weapons but a civilian shield booster doesn't cut it I'm afraid. Not local was down to two other pilots and Rozalina was asking (nay, demanding) that we meet her at a belt for some fisticuffs. I decided to warp to a scan spot first just to make sure all was ok. Revivor on the other hand leapt straight into belt IV-4 with a war cry.

She was jumped on by the remaining rifters so I turned round and went to help. Revivor was doing well but her shields were down. I locked underundertakers (also in a rifer) and proceeded to take her shields down. The 200mmACs spat EMP death and stripped her shields. Meanwhile, Revivor, who had targetted both Rozalina and Underundertaker knocked Rozalina's rifter out of the fight - Rozalina's pod popped out and blinking and just asking to be podded but no-one did the honours. I was too busy with underundertaker's rifter.

Her shields and armour disappeared quickly enough but it was then when I zoomed out a bit that I noticed a third rifter in the belt. Obviously, having just warped in and it went for the nearest pirate: Revivor. I heard her say someothing and then she was in a pod.

I quickly dispatched Underundertaker and scrambled the pod. Meanwhile, I had to quickly acquire the new target: another rifter piloted by Nak Nok. Not taking any chances I started to fire on Nak Nok with two of the 200mm ACs and the third 200mm AC was used to blow Underundertaker back to the cloning vats.

With Underundertaker duly dispatched, I concentrated on Nak Nok's rifter. It could hit hard and I suspected he was using Tech 2 ammo. Certainly my armour was protesting under the barrage. However, my tank held - and so did his but only for a minute. My 200mm ACs consistently scored hits on him, even without a webber and the NOS was adding more cap to my reserves while depleting his.

Nak Nok's tank was good though - probably some tech 2 stuff there too?

I controlled my cap flow and managed to get on top of the damage. Nak Nok's tank eventually broke (ran out of cap?) and my EMP rounds drilled into his hull. His ship exploded in a satisfying burst of light and debris - the scraps sparking off my remaining shields and armour. I quickly tried to acquire the pod as such a good fight deserved to end in a podding.

Nak Nok was good though and his capsule zipped off before I could even finish the lock cycle.

Checking the kill mail and all was revealed:

Tech II 150mm with barrage s and a big shield tank. Nice.

I looted what I could and collected the bodies.

Revivor then had to log - she only came on to check skills and ended up with two kills to her name and a lot of fun!

Later on in the evening - I spotted Dakker (MW) in local and we said hi. Have tangled with his corp and his predecessor corp (RLE) but they are a good bunch. He safe spotted while I went hunting for a thrasher that was ratting in Eifer.

Eifer is a big system with lot of belts, some of which are outside of scan range. Makes a challenge to get pilots. However, Bariaur (RMS) in his thrasher was trying to be careful as he knew there were other pilots around. I located him in belt V-3 and zipped in; my heart hammering and the adrenaline pumping through me. The thrill of chasing down a kill is still there, as intense as ever.

Bariaur's thrasher was a mixed AC and howie setup - not much of a pain but he was fast. The Bleeder came in, plasma trailing off it's sleek body from the warp tunnel and locked the thrasher. I hit the afterburner as soon as the navigation computer could align itself. I then pushed the punisher into a high-g 1000m orbit and started up the 200mm ACs.

The destroyer's shields soon fell to the trusty EMP shells. I wanted t get into his armour and chew into his hull. The bloodlust was on me and there was to be no mercy. His ACs scored hits on me but this is where the Bleeder's tanking ability and high resists came into it's own. The key
to the Bleeder is that it is hard to hit due to its size but if it does get hit: the high resists should reduce most of the damage. Finally, even if there's damage the SAR can be run almost indefinitely. Only issue with the bleeder is that it's damage is slow over time. I like to alpha-strike my targets. Fighting for a long time in a busy system is asking for trouble.

I took Bariaur down to hull and popped the ship. Bariaur pod was scrambled but he couldn't pay a ransom so he was popped.

We continued to chat once he recloned and swapped notes.

Meanwhile, a cyclone had appeared in local. I initiated chat with Dakker and asked if he wanted to hunt the cyclone down. We agreed on a truce and went after the battlecruiser. Dakker made contact first and I followed but I landed 48KM away. Dakker didn't have a scrambler and the cyclone managed to warp out.

Ach.

We hunted the cyclone over the next few minutes but a Myrmidon came into the fray. Ah, so things were getting complicated. We finally locked down the cyclone and proceeded into him. The Cyclone had problems hitting the rifter and the punisher but we could hit him.

We had him!

However, the myrmidon came into the fray. I warped out while Dakker stayed. A few nervous minutes passed and Dakker informed me that Taxus ( the myrmidon pilot) was so-far, neutral. I warped back in and landed on top of the Cyclone pilot (called Briaritus).

We killed him quickly, as the myrmidon had tech 2 drones. As soon as Briaritus cyclone popped- the Myrmidon turned on me! I was scrambled and his drones then proceeded to tear the punisher to pieces. Even before the damage reached the hull I was attempting to warp out.

The Punisher was shattered into small pieces under the combined firepower of the Myrmidon's 425mm autocanon II (yes, ACs) and his tech 2 drones. I warped out - so much for Taxus and his myrmidon being neutral.

Briaritus was podded and Dakker also lost his ship. Taxus had a good night.
