I am not hiding from monsters but it sometimes feel like I am. This is the longest break from EVE-ONLINE ever and it has turned out to be quite healthy actually. The reasons for the enforced break has been discussed before but my wife is still without a permanent job, my own roles have been cut back and job prospects are looking a little bleaker each month. We both agreed to cut back on 'stuff' in order to save money. Dropping from a double-income to a single one - with the outgoings still being the same was a jolt, I can tell you! We're not pleading poverty but wanted to see if we had the will and discipline to do it when things were hard but not impossible, before circumstances deteriorated to the point where we would be having trouble servicing the mortgage and the weekly shopping becomes an exercise in pain. So, sort of dipping one's toe in the water before the full cold-water submersion.

Why was EVE-ONLINE on the chopping block? Well, EVE isn't a game, it is a lifestyle, an obsession and a very fickle mistress. I have played EVE longer than I have known my wife and since she had more time now at home, it was only right that she wanted to spend it with me and I with her. I mean, she's my wife! Also, just having a conversation over a cup of tea with the cats bouncing around us is nice. I have learnt to say 'yes, dear' a lot of late!

It wasn't just EVE that was on the chopping block but also the cable TV subscription, regular outings to restaurants (though I love to cook at home - which I am doing more of, hurray!) and cinema outings to name a few.

My subscription is still active however, I paid for it with my credit card and it has a couple of months left. I left a long training session running so nothing lost I hope. I do feel a bit guilty when I try to log in, however, as the temptation to play is still there but I there's plenty to do around the house and garden and I still need to help my wife with job hunting. So, each time my mouse hovers over the login button - something else pulls me away.

My client has been regularly patched and I see some excitement from the FanFest in the form of blogs and videos. Also, the special edition - CCP please take my money! Looks delicious and I am due a small bonus so why not? Split it with the wife - she get's a manicure and a massage and I get the special edition DVD on pre-order AND may be some blag from the store too - I love the starmap t-shirt and the Gurista bag too.
Hi all,

You know, I always chuckled at the 'I am not dead yet' blog posts thinking that even if I cut back on my play time, that I would still be involved enough to say something noteworthy. Alas, the last two months has seen nothing of the sort. Complete break from most of, well, everthing.

My free time has been spent reading on my kindle, spending more quality time with my wife and friends and family.

The three-month storm from August to October appears to have finally blown past me. It involved the Olympics, Paralympics, death of a friend, notification of a terminal illness of another, two of my guys being headhunted and leaving the business and the straw that broken the camel's back: the death of my beloved cat.

My wife took it the hardest but I am happy to say that we went to a rescue centre and had our hearts stolen by not one, but two kittens who were simply adorable. It was wonderful to see my wife smile again though we do miss our cat and nothing can replace her. Now with two kittens, we just get distracted!

The two on the left from a family of four kittens.

Also, I have decided on accepting a challenge and run a marathon in early 2013! I normally run 10 km and cross-country so a marathon is a big deal for me. In fact, if there are any keen runners out there I would be very interested in tips and hints on training plans, equipment and diet suitable for a person of my build and fitness (medium build, regular exercise, regular football and running)?

Now, back to New Eden - what about it? I see that the countdown to Retribution is ticking down. Looking at my calendar, the day it hits the server is most likely the day that I log back in. Been so busy with stuff that I need to plan ahead for game time but the 4th Dec is but weeks away. What am I to expect?
A fix to Bounty Hunting? - looks interesting and I might even consider improving my sec status...
Crimewatch? - hmmm, I like the kill-rights idea but the flags look a bit confusing
New destroyers? - yes please.
New Tactical GUI update? - oh, really like the tooltips idea but a good pilot should already know the most pertinent facts about their weapons! However, thumbs up for some awesome looking changes

See you all very soon. I can't wait. I just hope I can remember where the undock button is and you know what, I am very excited about it. Almost recapturing the thrill of the first time I logged into Eve, almost 7 years ago...

I had a post already made up for today but I deleted it and replaced it with this one that follows. My original post had me updating people on my enforced absence with a plethora of events taking up my time and what I intended to do on my imminent return etc. However, it was scrapped and I re-wrote it as it seemed like a brain dump.

So many things took hold of my precious time these last three months:

Stress, I think

Olympics, Paralympics, a holiday-break-forced by wife and my own work with two of my team leaving the business, one death of a friend, terminal cancer for another friend, some of my friends now going through the dreaded mid-life crisis (including two divorces, one affair and one chap trying to 're-invent' himself in most hilarious fashion) - all assaulting my time.

Anyway, life certainly takes funny turns for me - the last three months therefore has had more events, good and bad than the last three years combined.

To top it all, my beloved cat died this a couple of days ago and this has hit me the hardest.

She was hit by a car and left on the road and was found by wife while I was at work. The cat, a surrogate child for us both was stiff and bloody and really, my wife shouldn't have been the one to find her, to bag her up and carry the small body back home. It should have been my job.

I couldn't make any initial sense of my wife blubbering at me, but managed to catch enough to realise something was wrong but after a few more calls; it all became chillingly clear. The silly cat who we had raised from kitten to cat is no longer with us. Last thing I remember was her dozing on top of the settee last night after sneaking around the house looking for 'things'. It's the memory that I am adamant will keep. Just wish I ended the night with a cat-hug as it would have been the last hug ever.

So why is losing this cat taken all the wind out of my sails?

I guess I will miss her walking over my keyboard when I am about to hit F1 (and she steps onto F8 and sets off a smartbomb instead...); I will also miss her crying out for food each morning as well as trying to smother me when my wife and I are in bed, fast asleep. So, a hard hit and I need to be there for my wife who is absolutely devastated. I think we're both going through the familiar and agonising ritual of second guessing ourselves on what we could have done, should we have kept her in that night? Checked on her earlier in the morning? Gave her an even bigger, reflective collar?

So many questions and you know what, spaceships and flying them isn't one of them.

Give me a couple of weeks people, was so looking forward to coming back but right now, the real world is important.

Bye bye sweetie. Missing you already.

My first post in about a two-month's of inactivity starts off with my deepest and sincerest condolences to the family of Sean Smith (aka Vile Rat) - the story has been reported in numerous organs around the world. A senseless loss of life that included the US Ambassador, three US consular staff and local staff. All over a film, or so we're told. The attack didn't seem spontaneous.

Vile Rat has indeed played a long-term and very strategic role in the crazy world of New Eden. On a personal note, I understand 100% the work he does, the commitment he had to make and the dangers he has been facing. I have on many an occasion worked in similar environments and countries; though my role differ from Sean's. I work for a NGO, he was contracted to the US Government. We're both in IT and no doubt, would have had stories to swap about some of the crazy shit one had to do to get internet access. Situations can suddenly balloon out of what looked like insignificant sparks into a fatal firestorm of injury and death. A friend of mine was caught up in the Marriott Hotel bombing in Pakistan two years ago, another was in Libya before the Gaddaffi over-through, yet another was in Kabul UN compound when it was stormed by the Taliban last year. I was nearly caught up in friendly fire in Pakistan last year. Yet more reasons why I need to rethink my own position. My wife certainly wants me home more often that's for sure.

Once again as a fellow New Eden resident and as a human being, my thoughts with his family and friends.

My sad theme continues however, I was away from the game initially due to the start of the London 2012 Olympics; what a set of games! However, a friend of mine, fighting cancer finally lost the battle, at 42. He was diagnosed about five years ago and it was in remission after his first fight back. We all thought he was in the clear and then all of sudden, it came back with a vengeance and killed him.

His funeral was just after the Olympics had ended. So a bitter sweet event for sure, after Team GB's superb showing. My friend was a keen sportsman himself and would have loved all the events.

So along came the London 2012 Paralympics, I was again involved in a support capacity and what an event! Loved it and cheered myself hoarse when I could attend the events. Was there to see the Paralympic flame get passed on.

Then came more news: another friend had to retire early at 39; due to cancer. He hasn't got long and decided to spend as much time with his two young kids and wife. The shock hasn't yet receded from anyone.

Before anyone asks me, no - in our youth, we did not grow up or play anywhere near a nuclear facility nor subject ourselves to unnecessary x-rays. However, at my age it is getting more likely that diseases and illnesses like this starts to afflict my peers (though late 30s is scary for me). Not to mention divorce, parenthood and mid-life crisis.

So, my planned return (I had no intention of dropping out of New Eden by the way) was delayed and then delayed again by real life. Right now, I am in a location that prevents me from using the Eve client (and anything useful for that matter), though I am going to sneakily install a VPN client and tunnel my out to at least enable me to download an update to the client!

Good karma to everyone, RIP to Vile Rat, RIP to my mate, MS and peace and good will to everyone.
Having been involved in the olympics, though not the security or the ticketing I hasten to add; I feel that the London games have been brilliant. Pity that our medal haul is still in single figures but come on Team GB.

So, this has had the unfortunate effect of seriously curtailing online space ship time but have no fear, I will be back and there's a number of changes that I am going to carry out (and announce) when I do get back.
Am sure many of us have been watching the AT X tournament with interest; great job by everyone involved. Some odd matches for sure but all enjoyable nonetheless. Love the dual tank Machs and nearly everyone seems to be running around with the ancillary shield boosters. I think I am going to slap one on a rifter and see how this puppy reacts!
I have been cheering on some of the more piratical bent alliances so shout outs and waves to Space P0lice and Shadow Cartel to name two. Oh by the way, Kil2, you're brilliant and the best of the bunch.

Action in low-sec, what else?
Before the regular fleet was official out on a roam, some of the fleet members were already tussling with some of the locals; in one fight - killing x2 stealth bombers that netted a total of approximately 400m isk drop in survived modules drop here and here. However, in terms of numbers; The Bastards came off worse with z0de losing his megathron to x2 100MN tengus amongst others. A ship set-up that we couldn't figure out (quickly enough) on how to deal with. Still, one always learns and that's why I love New Eden so much.

Racing around low-sec faction warfare space has been great fun, especially in a sensor booster artillery fitted thrasher. A lot of action with viable targets within a short jump range and enough kills to keep most pilots. Last night was a case in point, a mixed fleet of destroyers around the Bleak Lands; various militia gangs moving around. We raced into Roushzar as z0de called us in on a tackle on a stabber fleet issue. When we arrived, another militia fleet was there piling on the damage. We failed to get the pod though z0de got on the kill mail. We did have a neutral pilot with us who, since he wasn't militia flagged was instantly locked and popped by the other fleet. Oops, I think he will not be joining us in any more fleets now or in the future! z0de tried to save him by explaining to the friendly militia fleet that he was a neutral war photographer but all it got was guffaws. Well, we tried!

The fleet continued and Mal in his navy slicer warned us that there was a flashy (actually WT) merlin, enyo and retribution hanging about the Kourmonen / Auga gate. Cool, we landed and jumped to the other side and engaged. No messing.

Unfortunately, I landed within blaster range of the enyo. Now this thrasher of mine is for quick-locking and long range bombardment. Not close up work. I called the Merlin primary despite of being within the tender embrace of the enyo (which was pointed) and decided to trade shots. The merlin went down and despite my attempts to get away; the enyo melted me as the rest of the fleet shot the Gallente assault frigate to scrap. The retribution was the last and was dispatched.
So I love the thrasher - Even if the price of ships has shot up but the insurance pay-out takes the sting out somewhat.

After shooting a fleet mate, make sure you say sorry and bring flowers....

A couple of nights ago was my first blue-on-blue (or purple-on-purple) incident. I blame myself, was in a fleet of 40+, in my thrasher when a rifter got closer and closer to me. At 500m, it opened up with it's weapons, webs and scrambler. My thrasher is an arty fit one and my first instinct should have been to to match the guys speed and direction (to cut down the transversal) and then hit him. However, I tried to convo him as I was convinced he had 'mis-targetted' me (is that a word?) - but my thrasher for the night was paper thin and by the time I realised that, no he was shooting and intended to separate the pod from my vessel; it was too late. I fired two volleys. The first one missed, the second took him into half armour and then I went pop. Meanwhile, the rest of the fleet suddenly realised what was going on and local exploded with many an expletive. The offender was caught, webbed, scrambled, popped AND podded.

Meanwhile, yet another fleet member cheekily grabbed my loot (which included the mods from another fleet member who died earlier and I was keeping his mods for him), left the fleet and raced off to wherever he called home! Ignoring all calls to bring the stuff back.

I have to laugh though - what goes around, comes around. The Bastards are pirates and right now, we're having a fun time with the Minmatar militia as er, privateers for the summer. However, the Minnie militia certainly has it's fair share of criminals, brigands and thieves too so we do feel at ease and at home.

So it is now surprise, that I have been convo'ed a few times in the last two weeks that some corporations are leaving us red; despite both now being in the same militia. They will shoot us regardless. This should be interesting and will make combined fleets an exercise in restraint. Well, at least they have the courtesy to tell me. That night, I think was just a mashed up overview by a capsuleer noob, so no biggie. However, if someone could sell me a couple of thrasher hulls cheaply - that would be great too! Having lost our jump freighter ability for the time being, I am somewhat constrained with ship moves.

P.S.
Without even realising it, I had some er, Loyalty Points for my actions at shooting someone. Yes, I was paid LPs to shoot someone. What a change in events. Anyway, these LPs were cashed in for some BPs and implants. Should I sell them or use them myself? I always wanted to fly a stabber fleet issue! Either way, some more isk, can't say no.
Recently, I was asked to sit in on a Pirate Q&A panel for Eve University. This was organised by extraordinary pirate Sard Caid from the pirate's side. Joining Sard were two other illustrious and infamous characters: Suleiman Shouaa (Tuskers) and Wowbagger (Shadow Cartel) - of course, a few other chaps were missing but this was through no fault of Sard or Eve Uni.
Still, it was an honour to be present with these guys and despite some initial issues with my mumble account (we use vent, ts and eve-voice); I finally managed to get my head around it and hopefully contributed fruitfully to the discussion.

The session was two hours long but it went by quick - the listeners were very attentive and fired at us some excellent questions which I hope we, collectively answered as well as we could. Our different cultures and styles as pirates did come through too, every pilot is different even more so when talking about pirates. At the end of the session, I hope that the listeners (both live and those who listen to the recording) will find that low-sec piracy (and living there) an attractive alternative to either high-sec or null-sec.

Faction Warfare

After numerous chats with corp mates and our flying companions; The Chupacabras - we discussed the possibility of The Bastards signing up for Faction Warfare. With the summer looming, there would be the inevitable drop in activity so why not jump onto FW and see what it can offer for this summer? Certainly, we had a chance now to tackle hostile pilots on gates and stations without a war-dec and no sentry fire! Am up for anything so decided to sign up with the Minmatar republic since our home station is in Minmatar space, if we picked Amarr or Caldari factions - we would certainly be locked out of our own hangars! After the sign-up was processed we went straight for it - taking a fleet of destroyers down to the front line. Now, the struggle between the Minmatar and Amarr is as an old one. We're probably going to add just a bit more death and destruction to it. We checked the operations board: the Minmatar has grabbed a massive chunk of real-estate early on but it looks like this was partly due to the influence of certain Goons, if stories are to be believed. Having the Amarr now come back and grab their lost systems back means more interesting fights. We found some contested systems and set course.

When the roam had finished, we ended up killing x2 thrashers, x1 catalyst, x1 drake, x1 stabber, x2 rupture and x1 rifter on the night for the loss of x2 vigils and x1 punisher. We could have killed half that number again if we had any long points. We grabbed nearly all the loot, so jangling all the way home. Not bad for the first outing as an organised group. I even gained some loyalty points. No idea what to do with them though.
Should be fun and profitable but so long as activity continues, then we will keep flying. Of course, am going to organise a drunk roam (once my liver heals) and we will be roaming around low-sec too. Just no shooting our new purple tagged friends.
Coinciding with this summer move of ours, I have seen the return of some of old faces: DJ Akula, Wikkid One, Zemledock, Ard Unjiigo and others. Very happy to see some of these veterans, they'll be rusty no doubt but one should rediscover their killing touch soon enough.

I am flying a hound but I have to say, the Nemesis looks sweet. Might need to get me one of those. However the pickings have been slim so we decided that it was time for a change. Stealth Bombers are ninja for sure but I think I need Rixx to give us some pointers! I will continue to fly them for sure but a little bit of luck would have been welcome.

We have the ships now....

So time to ship up to the venerable battle-ship class ships and with six pilots & hulls available, we decided that the remote repping set-up would give us the most bang per buck. Thrown in a force recon and we were good to go.

Our fleet:
Megathron
Dominix
Typhoon
Typhoon
Armageddon
Rapier

With the recent revamp of Faction Warfare we have definitely seen an increase in numbers in all systems but most pilots have been flying around in smaller ships classes: frigates and destroyers so not too useful against the larger (and slower) battle ship hulls we were piloting. With a scout ahead of us, we rolled around low-sec until we ended up in Molden Heath when the fleet scattered a little in order to cover more ground. This proved to be a fatal mistake but at the time it wasn't obvious.

Our scout reported that a neutral dominix was tackled one jump away from our current position in Oddelulf (we were headed to Bosena but our other scout reported negative targets) - our megathron suddenly lost connection two jumps away while the rest of use leapt into action. Timing was horrible as the megathron was our main source of DPS but we were committed to the action so away we rumble into fire and destruction!

I promise you that is what I said!

Landing at the gate we saw a megathron, stabber, blackbird, typhoon and a tempest. We set primary to be the tempest while sending our drones onto the blackbird. They counter attacked by going after Dil'e Mahn's Dominix having dispatched the neutral Dominix easily. Any remote repair work requires timing and organisation and quick reactions. We fired off our reppers and kept Dil'e alive while we got to work on the megathron, the ship we assumed would be the main damage dealer. Our DPS was low however, relative to the fleet hulls we were flying. The megathron was going down slowly but without the punching power of our own megathron, it was going to be tight. The blackbird came back at range and then, an Archon appeared.

Game over for us as it quickly slapped armour repairers onto the megathron completely negating our incoming damage. In addition to the archon, it was joined by an abaddon and an armageddon to add to our woes and we were surrounded.

Our own repairing efforts was too little to counter the incoming damage. Edney went down, guns blazing and then it was Dil'e followed by Mal. I was left to last (thanks guys!) and whipped my pod back home along with the rapier and megathron. A sobering experience for sure - I really should scrape some cash together to get a carrier for myself!

(oh, for some insane reason I now have Minnie Dread and Minnie Cap Projectile at V) - why, I ask myself? I must have wanted a long skill training when I went on leave all those weeks ago and never checked back.

However, I have now looked at the price of ships (from frigates all the way up to capital class) and all I can say is this: DAMN. Most ships have increased by at least 35% if not more; luckily I have a bunch of ruptures but I feat that this will mean we will need to fly even smarter. I suspect that (at least for us poor pirates) - we will be flying the T1 express more!

Have no fear, my rupture of doom will be taking to the skies this week. I am going to see if I can fit a ship for just a few million in terms of fittings and still be effective? Absolutely. Stay tuned.
Ever since Kane Rizzel announced that he had reset M34N corporation, I have rarely seen this low-sec pirate institution around Metropolis / Heimatar. Feels a bit odd wandering into the Eifer/Gusandall region of space and not see them. However, nature abhors a vacuum and I have seen a number of corporations and alliances seemingly step into the gap left by M34N.

I might have some targets for you to whack...

We had a call from an acquaintance that there were targets to be had in Eifer so I duly led out a fleet of four drakes and one hurricane towards the area. With the new missile updates, I was highly distracted following (almost mesmerised) the exhaust of trails of torpedoes, rockets and missiles as they vomited forth from their launchers. Yes, the Inferno upgrade has made me highly jealous now of my missile-oriented companions as all my focus and skill was towards projectiles and auto canons I think a refocus is needed. However, being distracted isn't ideal when you have a small fleet with you.

Anyway, the short journey was led by Marco Drack who jumped into Eifer and immediately tackled another drake. Obvious bait, as local shot up and we jumped into the inevitable fire. Still we opened up on the drake and the sentry guns spoke back. Being in the hurricane, I was the primary. Knowing this I had already pushed my micro warp drive and attempted to get some distance from the gate....yet, I was not moving. No scramblers or webs on me either. I was moving (according to the read out) around 1350 m/s yet was still only 500m from the in-gate. Rather perturbed I tried to pulse the drive but to no avail. I seemed to be stuck. So, the fighting started as soon as the last ship in our fleet opened fire, the enemy fleet landed and I discovered the engaging fleet was from The Obsidian Front.
Unfortunately for me, they primaried my arse. I went down pretty quick: unable to take advantage of the hurricane's speed and maneuverability as I was still apparently, 500m from the gate and still going at 1350 m/s. Got volleyed down to hull and then into scrap soon thereafter. Marco took over but he had already bailed and was on his way back as the Obsidian chaps got to work on us. The butcher's bill was too high as we lost all our ships, destroying one of their drakes, one of their zealot and their rupture. Sometimes, engagements just don't work out the way you hope it would be.
As we raced back to re-ship I definitely noticed that there were more people in most of the 'usual' systems; preparation for the new Faction Warfare revamp perhaps? Am looking at all this quite keenly to see where we, as pirates can mostly benefit. Heck, we may even consider joining in, somehow. Getting paid for PvP, surely not?!

The rest of the night was full of near misses which was frustrating but this is New Eden, what do you expect - victims to come marching to you?

Inferno

My thoughts on Inferno is that it adds some lovely little features in the form of missiles. They are now soooo cooool that I am tempted to do my piracy in a stealth bomber! I need time to get used to the inventory window however. Can be a bit confusing for a human pilot but I read with some interest that it has also affected the botters and their automated programs. Quite funny, I wonder if CCP had this planned? Doubt it but a useful spin-off result nonetheless.

What else? Of course, the new Stealth bombers are lush. I love all of them and will be flying them more next time I log on. I also thank Rixx Javix for an excellent series of posts on using Stealth Bombers in Low Sec. Everyone even remotely interested in using SBs in low sec should head over to Mr Javixx's excellent site.

Oh, here's the teaser trailer for inferno.

Now, there's a lot more that I want to explore: Merc contract place and the being able to assist in war declaration. Wonderful! Just head over to the notes here and get more information.

More stuff
Things are very busy for me in real life, New Eden is a harsh and demanding mistress and there's no 'casual' mode that satisfies. One needs to manage but there's no adrenaline rush akin to the instant before combat ensues. I love it and it makes it worthwhile; however I am sneakily playing Mass Effect 2 when I can (or dual boxing on my laptop) and if only Incarna becomes something similar to Mass Effect? If Dust514 is successful, then one can only hope?

Thanks for the comments on the last post about the Kill of the Month awards; I did also state that low-sec piracy was Eve in hard mode (I point to Kane Rizzel) but I got a lot of interesting responses.Flashfreshhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06590735382048624006noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36546065.post-30239864150316551482012-05-15T09:52:00.000+01:002012-05-15T10:38:50.598+01:00The Bastards just love the Kill of the Month.

This is what we want to do each night....

Like any organisation, we all see a dip in numbers and activity. New Eden is a demanding mistress: but sometimes, the pull on everyone's time cannot be dealt with equitably. As a consequence many pilots take a break from the game and try something else. This is fine - after all, we all PAY to fly these shiny ships so why can't we just step away from the game when something else more attractive comes along?

Shhh, I just discovered Mass Effect 1 and love it. I hear that there's Mass Effect 2 and Mass Effect 3. Wonderful, if only walking in stations looked as cool!

As a consequence, The Bastards can and frequently operate as solo
or duo gangs through necessity. I mean, why not? Nothing worse then spinning ships in your
hangar and seeing an empty Corp Chat for example. However, it is even worse when
one decides that there is nothing to do, you simply can't be bothered and simply disconnect from
GalNet, unplug yourself from the pod and wander around to seek other pleasures. Boredom and lack of companions (in the manly sense) means Sad Pirate and safe care bears.

My only advise is not to biomass your clone in a fit of depression.

Lately we've been bolstered by our Italian pirate companions, Los Chupacabras. No, they're not Mexicans but definitely Italian and props goes to their newly minted CEO, Mal Iss - we love his smooth Italian accented English.
The Order of the Peregrine

A simple by shiny medal

So, it is with great pleasure and satisfaction that I can see some Bastards frequently go out, solo and 'just do it'. Yes, EVE-Online is an environment that needs the cooperation of all your pilots as it is not a single player environment as some would like it to be. However, it is difficult to cooperate when you're on your own most of the time; especially for a small corporation like ourselves. The Bastards recognise this and we celebrate the solo kill within the corporation with a medal - the
'Order of the Peregrine' and the reward of a T2 frigate hull of the
winners choice. This was set up over three years ago and it is going strong. I might have to rethink the T2 frigate hull prize though: the solo kill was mainly for those who flew frigate class vessels but there's a few kills in other ship types now.

The prize is a small gesture of thanks and an acknowledgement that this particular pilot is playing Eve in 'hard mode'. Solo in low-sec and as a criminal - is there nothing harder to master?

Unlike our fellow pirates, The Tuskers; The Bastards do not operate solo as often as I would like it but those Bastards that do, do it well. Am tempted to re-organise our regular fleets into much smaller entities (i.e. have a MAXIMUM fleet size) before undocking for example. Am sure other fellow pirates from Gunpoint Diplomacy and Shadow Cartel Alliance have their own views on fleet number and compositions. Am eager to hear them on how much longer are the small gangs and solo work viable in light of what I see as bigger and more organised fleets?

Of course, the master of solo piracy is my long time friend and fellow pirate, Kane Rizzel. If only I had him with us, he could teach some of the younger pirates a thing or two. I think I need to clone Mr Rizzel; now where did I leave his body? Even so, there are changes even in moribund low-sec space but Kane is adapting with his usual aplomb.

So let's look at the latest winner of The Bastards Order of the Peregrine: he is the unusually named pirate: 'Dynamically Reconfigured' who has been leading a one-man crusade in low-sec space; mainly in the Heimatar/Metropolis region but other areas too. Certainly, in terms of volume he has been hammering them in. Johnny Twelvebore and Layla (a newly minted Meatshield) is also getting the solo kills in.

Sometimes, you can't be picky when it comes to solo work....

Dynamic joins a long list of illustrious Bastards, past and present.

As I reviewed the kill of the months, highlights include

There's a number of pirates who has had the award twice but never three times.

The main ship type used for solo work is frigate and then cruiser class. There's no battle ship class in the list. Am still waiting for someone to use an electronic attack ship or an industrial ship!

The Vexor has featured twice when the main cruisers we fly tend to be Ruptures.

Biggest disparity in class size was interceptor versus battle ship and stealth bomber versus battle ship.

The most popular solo interceptor is the Taranis.

A few anomalies including Tibbs infamous ten hulk killing and a bellicose killing a pre-nerfed dramiel.

None of the 1 v 1 are consensual. Arranged 1 v 1 are fun and cool (recall Nashh's CDM run of posts) but they are not solo kills in the 'piratey' sense.

An honourable mention to TFS Tibbs and BracerKirk for their infamous kill of a CCP Dev and his cockroach. The killmail is here and the full post and comments are here. If either Tibbs or Bracer managed to get it solo, it would have been the kill of the year (a new award?) - but both helped each other out.

Finally, I want to say a big thank you to Marco Drack who organises the thread and post each month for the Kill of the Month on The Bastards, having taken it other from the much-missed Persephone Astrid.

Any old Bastards, if the kills bring back warm memories of smack and fun, well - we will always welcome back good pirates and pilots. To any readers out there; if you have some solo kills you are particularly proud of, drop me a line.
Roam and solo-tackling on gates

Last night we had a little fleet going and just one jump out of Evati, we tangled with Eve Uni. They had ranged out from their low-sec campus in Dudreda and it was too tempting to pass up. The Unistas were smart, hanging around the gates and not initiating any aggression. So they left that last bit to us. We raced in and tried to grab as many of them as possible. However, they all managed to not fire back and jump through. Well, not all of them - one made the mistake of shooting z0de (who wouldn't want to shoot z0de? - joke) and he was promptly tackled, webbed and pummeled into flaming scrap. We lost no-one but had the gate guns hammering away at us. Tsk tsk.

We then turned round and killed an Unista Osprey again on the gate and under sentry gun fire. Yes, we're bullies but what the hell and besides, sentry guns hurt and the global criminal countdown is ANNOYING AS HELL.

Then it was off towards Kane Rizzel's home in Gusandall and Eifer. We noticed a battle cruiser gang there of x3 hurricanes and x1 harbinger. Cpt Nessaja, an old hand at piracy was also around and we greeted the wily bastard. There were others but z0de volunteered to go in ahead and bait them but we failed to get to z0de when hostilities started and z0de died and we caught nothing. Pity.

We then switched over to a frigate gang and continued racing around low-sec, we shipped down from battle cruisers as we wanted a change. Love the frigate, still nothing like 'em for the cost and versatility. I was in a rifter (of course) and there were a few other rifters, a punisher and Dil'e taranis of doom. I have to say that Dil'e had no fear tackling non-criminals at gates in the speedy little ship; incurring the wrath of the sentry guns and surviving is no easy feat. Guys have balls of steel.

An honorable mention to Johnny Twelvebore in his punisher: the infamous 'bleeder' set-up. He too tackled people on gates and suffered sentry fire...and survived. Of course, Johnny's confidence got the better of him and he decided to solo tackle a drake. Or was he himself tackled by a drake at a station? Either way, the plucky little ship exploded in a spectacular fashion.

We also managed to kill an afk kestrel sitting on a gate in low-sec - even podding the poor fool too. It was a target too tempting to pass up!

The night ended with the pirates heading home; not too much loot but plenty of fun was had. Layla and Aaron were both caught and killed by some Sansha ships as part of their incursions: those guys are nasty.

The Bastards and friends undock....

Time for another Bastards' fleet - so this time round, I had a fleet of x5 drakes, x2 hurricanes, x2 arazus, x1 sliepnir and x2 taranis. Not a bad mustering for a small alliance like ourselves. Pity we can't run like this every days and across all time zones. However, we're working on some activities that will promote more solo-work; though we're doing ok already on that front thanks to some stalwart individuals.

So as ever, The Bastards & friends left Evati local and headed out, since I was in Molden Heath and assisting some Gunpoint Diplomancy and friends on their bhaalgorn tackle. I took the opportunity to reacquaint The Bastards with Molden Heath, a fine region of Minmatar space I might add.

We rolled relatively quickly through the system, with Dil'e and z0de racing ahead in their taranis (pl. tarani?) of doom we found ourselves in Molden Heath with no incident. This was actually disappointing for some of the pilots, but you can't please everyone all of the time!

The Pirate Channel!

At this time, we had a friend update from some Gunpoint chaps via the pirate only Molden Heath intel channel that there was a hostile entity close by, who had recently moved in and might be rolling a fleet out. I think he was referring to some Balkan Express chaps. At this time, one of my scouts spotted a fast moving, belt hopping hurricane, piloted by someone from the above mentioned corporation. I ordered the tackle to be made and then sent in some heavier reinforcements. Then it escalated (surprise, surprise) and I then sent in the rest of the fleet and away we went. Balkan Express had seven battle cruisers and three guardians while we had 12 ships, 8 of them battle cruisers and forming the main damage platform. Their bait eventually died as is the fate of all live bait but I was set as primary and was content to sit and tank, being close to a gate I could jump if the incoming damage was too much. We managed to force a neutral falcon off the field, it didn't carry the BALEX corp ticker but we weren't going to take the chance.

Fair well my dear ship...

We were already under sentry gun fire already due to existing criminal countdowns (we were naughty and killed an iteron..) but figured that the damage would be spread evenly among us. We certainly could do with a more permanent logistics support wing! I didn't fire back and pulsed my shield boost while calling targets. Even so, the management of my capacitor, shield booster and keeping myself on top of the target calling was taxing. Then to my horror, one of my drakes (no names but I am looking at YOU) rammed into my and sent me flying away from the gate. By the time I managed to fire up the thrusters to arrest my unannounced departure I was 6 Km from the gate. I tried to race back and twitched my micro warp drive; knowing full well that my signature would balloon to that of a small moon and significantly increase the incoming damage. It was a foolish decision, I died under the hail of missile fire, laser beams, autocannon shells and drone damage. At least most of my mods survived.

The secondary FC took over and smoothly re-positioned the fleet before holding the field. We could have grabbed more but I was content with the result. The secondary FC then moved the fleet off the gate, after looting it and got into a safe just as more BALEX came into the field, this time upshipping to battle ship class vessels (abaddon, armageddon with guardian support) - since they now appear to have a base in Atlar, it was no surprise. The FC decided that we had our pound of flesh and disengaged. We also warned the local Molden Heath pirates of the fight and two joined the fleet: Cpt Nessaja and CraftyCroc. Both arrived as the fight was ending but they agreed to stay with the fleet and look for more targets.

Some Unistas

Meanwhile I raced home to get a new ship as well as picking up two more pilots. The fleet was growing organically. The short hop back to Metropolis for the fleet and I was asked to resume fleet command, this time I was in a cyclone. Some pilots left the group, others joined up and we were aware that an Eve-University pilot was observing us. Sure enough, our intel channel squawked that there was a large Eve-Uni fleet, mainly destroyers and frigates inbound from their low-sec training ground of Dudreda. We were BC heavy.

Sure enough, the unistas came in and were spoiling for a fight. We met them on the gate but they crossed jumped us and tried to catch some of our stragglers. Ships that I deliberately asked to get tackled in order to initiate a fight. This went on for a bit as the Unistas wisely did not bite until we got to the Ingunn system. This time, the bulk of the fleet was through a gate, Marco was left on the other side (in is hurricane) and we fired on the Unistas on the out gate, they then jumped back and all pounced on Marco.

Game on.

We jumped back and then proceeded to work through the Unistas fleet. Marco, bravely tried to tank them but with approximately 18 (?) frigates and destroyers (and the sentry guns) all pounding away at the passive tank, Marco's much loved hurricane exploded. He made sure that he had a piece of most of the Unistas. Meanwhile, we proceeded to slowly work through their ship list and eventually managed to take down 12 of the 17/18 ships for the loss of Marco's hurricane. The recovery of a Gistii A-Type micro warp drive from Capricamper Shore's Navy Hookbill more than paid for Marco's lost hull.

By this time, I called a halt to the proceedings and took the fleet home via a secondary route allowing Cpt Nessaja and CraftyCroc to nip home as well. An excellent and fun night. Shout outs to Los Chupas, Gunpoint and other pirates and helpers.
One of the many things I love about Eve and piracy specifically are the people one meets over time and how these relationships can be fruitfully utilised. Last night, Marco and I were online and chatting and I was exhausted, mentally and physically from a 60+ jump in my pod. I had located a jump-clone of mine and decided to bring it closer to my main area of operations. For those who know, this is the Metropolis / Heimater / Molden Heath area. So, I decided to dock up, settle my affairs for the night and activate the jump clone. The last thought through my head as I drifted off to sleep was: where is that station? I don't recognise the name..

Well, I woke up in a dingy station out somewhere in null-sec. There was no attendant to hand me a towel or offer me the use of the shower facilities. After bumbling around I realised that somehow, I was in null-sec space and that I had to pod race all the way back to low-sec space. The journey was rather 'interesting' though I did avoid dying. I finally got back to low-sec only long enough to switch again to a my clone in Evati and race towards Molden Heath to assist some fellow pirates from Gunpoint Diplomacy and friends on tackling a bhaalgorn class ship and friends from the 'House of Cards' alliance. For such shiny ships, I had to assist. To my delight, I realised that the commander of the fleet was 'Dirty Protagonist' - a chap I know from the past; adding to the fun was the presence of Venom Orchid, that minx of piracy and profanity and whom Marco I knew would flirt with as he too was racing towards Molden Heath in his curse.

Anyway, I arrived too late to catch the bhaalgorn but managed to tackle an abaddon whom had blundered into the fight. I looked like Gunpoint had a few frigates out around one of their own custom offices and that the small zippy craft was tempting enough for The House of Cards alliance to drop in on them with something big and heavy. In this case, led by their Bhaalgorn class battle ship. They also had a few cruisers and frigates for the engagement from what I can be seen on the killboards.

Even more fun, even in my wee' old claw, I managed to grab and point two rupture class cruisers on a gate (and survive the snetry guns) before heading back home. I said my good byes to the Gunpoint chaps and promised that if they needed some extra bodies (sweaty, smelly, unwashed pirate bodies that it) then all they had to do was ask and The Bastards would come calling. We used to roam around Molden Heath but since Metropolis and Heimater had gotten busier, we had neglected this route. I think it is time to park some resources close by so that we can better assist our fellow pirates.

This is the beauty of it: on slow days, we would no doubt joust with each other - no quarter asked or given but when opportunity knocks, us pirates set aside our (admittedly small) differences and gang up on some interloper. None of the rather more involved diplomatic standings etc.

Anyway, a shout out to Dirty Protagonist, Venom Orchid, Crefakis, Pere et al. Pleasure flying with you all and I look forward to more.
Nice stuff....I couldn't attend Fanfest this year but it looked fantastic. Been watching the Spring/Summer 2012 Release Overview with Jon Lander and I have to admit it looks quite exciting. However, am waiting for it to hit tranquility before I deal with it. So after a three-week break, I came back suitably refreshed and eager for action. I formed a fleet of about a dozen blood thirsty pirates and away we went - my in our corp-issued lachesis and the rest of the fleet made up of hurricanes and drakes. Marco Drack had to be different and came in a broadsword but to be honest, that would make super bait.

Plenty of traffic around but without a dedicated prober or scout (shame on you Flash for not organizing it!!) we relied on either z0de or Marco to entice targets to them. The start was encouraging: a tornado loitering with friends in low-sec. We then caught a hurricane after his friends fled, another hurricane and....another hurricane. Each time, we failed to catch the rest of this friends - I obviously fail in the lachesis but I think I miss BracerKirk and his insta-locking arazu.

Last night had me fly about 46 jumps in total just to witness the destruction of a friendly fleet - I escorted the unlucky pilots home! More happening this weekend but back to work for me however, I am eagerly waiting for the next installments so roll on the 24th April!
I had a list of other matters to attend to but then, my main PC (a lovely shiny new 64-bit machine) refused to boot. I blamed the spanking new SSD I had installed. Anyway, plenty of fiddling and I finally decided to reinstall the whole OS. Should be back online tonight.

However, before I left, me and the Bastards had been busy.

I had been reading one of the DevBlogs on the revamp to ships and I am sitting back a bit stunned and breathless. All I can say to anyone is: train Battlecruiser V and Destroyer V! I have already invested a lot of time into these two skills so I wonder what I can get back in return? A few million SPs would be nice, I can then chuck them towards some capital based skills that I haven't bothered to look at or maybe even some leadership based ones. Still, this has generated a massive threadnaught and I sat on the fence looking on in interest.

Still, I do like the ship tree diagram and will print it out as a poster and stick it on the wall!

Something else caught my eye: featured on latest E-ON magazine were The Bastards! I remember having a chat with Zapatero a while back, little did I know he was busy scrawling notes about us ready for an article. Now, I have a copy but am unsure if it will break any copyright if I scanned it and posted it here. Suffice it to say, the article was snappy and to the point. I like it.

Rolling around low-sec
One of the main reasons why I have been too busy to blog is that our section of New Eden has seen a massive upsurge in activity in the European timezone. We have mainly fleets ranging from 5 - 50 in number moving around spoiling for a fight. Am seeing a fair few tier-3 only fleets, the more traditional shield drake & logistics fleet to an effective myrmidon and guardian fleet the other night. Not to forget, the usual kitchen sink Eve-Uni fleets. So, whenever I have time from my busy work; I join up with fleets and fly around; hunting, shooting and ransoming people. So please forgive me if I am too busy to post. I should really tweet shouldn't I?
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36546065.post-36052835741160112862012-03-26T07:24:00.001+01:002012-03-26T07:25:34.329+01:00RL and OOC - on my travels, back soonI have a couple of posts more or less ready to go (missing some pictures and final editing) but then real life came along and drop-kicked my free time. Am going to be travelling (work related) for about 2-3 weeks and I was kidding myself when I thought I would have enough time in the evening to login and play. I barely have enough time to sleep and eat when not networking, attending seminars and talks and generally running around all over the place to absorb as much information as humanly possible to satisfy my boss's need to justify my inclusion to the 'trip'.

So dear people, when I get back - there will be a catch-up post and pictures and stuff. Just before going on leave for a week, I posted that two of my Bastards had snagged a ship flown by a CCP Dev and ended up podding him and getting a super rare ship in the drop, an Engima. I then left it at that and when I came back, I was a bit shocked at the amount of text that was generated across a number of different forums and killboards: from Reddit to EveNews24 to EVE-Kills to Eve-O.

I was a bit disappointed with the comments from various persons who accused us of faking kill mails (to pad our kill board) to being close friends of CCP and getting some cool toys because of it. A list of where people talked about it is at the bottom of this post.

After spending some time reading through all the relevant posts I wanted to take the opportunity to answer back, clarify and refute as much as possible but helpfully, TFS Tibbs, one of the two Bastards who was involved decided to put something down on and I share it with you all.

-----------------------------------------------------------
The Enigma Affair

It was a early morning and I was drifting around Dudreda after a previous night's fun with the Eve-Uni blob. I thought I would run around the Arifsdald pocket, just behind the Eve-Uni base system. This system always has a few explorers to hunt down.

I jumped my prober into Ansen, a nice small system always good as everything appears on directional scanner. So a quick and easy task and on entering the system, I saw only one pilot in local. However, hang on a minute, it was a CCP guy! My first reaction was that it was some kind of roleplaying event. I wonder what its for?

I hit the directional-scanner and spot a single ship.....a cockroach? WTF is that?

Second thought– I vaguely remember a role playing event where stuff was left in a wormhole for players to find -okay must be one of those frigates. I dropped probes.

A member of the Meatshields is passing one jump away, I pull him into fleet and I have a tackler now.
2 scan cycles later and I have a warpable target. We both jump in and I squad warp to target.

We land close to a weird looking ship and I hear “point”, joy. The mystery ship was warp scrambled. Thank you Bracer! So quickly we start shooting this spider looking craft. It had shields and such and Bracer's ishkur's drones tore into it. No return fire, no movement to escape, no magic weapon. Nothing, holy shit, the pilot wasn't asleep was he? Once it was down to near hull we stopped shooting and kept points only; it was ransom time. This will be epic on The Bastards' ransom board!

I invite the Dev to our ransom channel, I have to pay a CSPA charge (SERIOUSLY WTF!) however, there was no response; the Dev is definitely AFK.
The killmail has been API verified so I hope that removes all doubts. Great pity that we could not have kept the shiny red ship. I mean no-one can fly the damn thing so why not? It would make a wonderful addition to someone's hangar. A two plex reward is better than nothing and I have created and awarded a special medal to Tibbs and Bracer too but it is a poor reward when compared to keeping the ship!

Out of interest, if this ship WAS allowed to be kept - I wonder how much Tibbs would have gotten for it? I keep hearing 100b isk but surely not? Who would pay for this ship?
Shameless plug...

While we cannot guarantee cockroach kills or CCP Dev bodies, we do have regular ops and roams (all small to medium fleets) as well as having a laugh. If you want to join us pirates, come on over to the Eve-O recruitment thread, bump it, follow the instructions and apply to join. We invite recruits to our regular fleets as part of the interview. Go on, you'll love it.

Also we have a need for US Timezone pilots (or corporations) to join us. Drop me or TFS Tibbs an evemail or convo.Flashfreshhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06590735382048624006noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36546065.post-80999645800224472992012-02-10T12:29:00.003+00:002012-02-10T23:17:27.221+00:00Roaming fleets - I love them and WTF is a COCKROACH?
The Low Sec Roam
We undocked into our local space and the Sansha incursion was still there - hanging around gates became a very bad idea as these chaps could hit HARD. Local was at an usual high of 60+ and a check scan revealed a fleet from the Volition Cult in their huginns and scimitars. SniggWaffe came in and chased them off while we were still getting ready. Snigg then got bored and also left the scene; meanwhile a sizeable Sicarius fleet went into Hagilur no doubt to do battle with a smaller fleet made up with pilots from the 'Something Posing as meat' alliance. Then there was the presence of Eve-University in Hagilur too. Yes, quite a typical night in this neck of Metropolis.

All in all, I knew something would kick off somewhere. We lept in to impose ourselves onto the local scene but we couldn't get anything useful. Man, I do miss Max and his stiletto in these times. We were too slow to cross the distance and the fight had petered out by the time we arrived. It wasn't all bad luck, z0de managed to kill a caracal in his paper thing brutix and we also snagged a Celestis; both with Eve-Uni. This then kicked off a some sort of hunt where Eve-Uni, The Fendalian Collective and Sicarius (shame on them, all flashy and criminal) joined up to camp the gates blocking our exit route back to Evati. Sicarius should be fighting Eve-Uni and The Fendalian collective since I thought they are pirates! There was chatter that leaked out into local from the Fenders:

"HOLD FIRE!"

Then followed by:

"Sorry, your flashiness scared us."

Yes, that is what happens when you have criminals in your midst. The overview can be distracting, just invite them into fleet. Anyway, we moved deeper into the Hagilur pocket looking for more targets. If people wanted us, they will have to find us. Camping gates is one of the most boring activities around and I was sure that people would just get bored - thereby offering us an opening. Eve-Uni for most of this time stayed docked up, poking their heads out only occasionally before ducking back in. We rolled around Ansen, Arwa etc before we decided it was time to leave. I checked with my scouts and sure enough, the exit gate was now cleared, the carebear camp lasted no more than 15 minutes. We moved through. Just as we emerged into the familiar Evati star filled sky, another one of my scouts informed me that a pirate fleet had come in through Thelan and had jumped into another camp!

So we raced back and only managed to get a few scraps. However, a man has to eat so we were grateful for the meagre morsels. We the moved around again into the outskirts of The Forge when we spied a megathron and friends, we jumped in and killed them only for a third fleet come piling in. We killed their stealth bomber and made a hasty withdrawal. All the while enduring some silly smack from the newcomers. They were awfully confused mistaking us as members of yet another fleet of pirates next door and calling us out for running away.

Anyway, no worries from us as we were quite chill with kills and loot aplenty. We docked up and rested, some pirates leaving their ship hangars to deal with other business while new pirates, fresh from resting came on board. The Bastards' are more active now (though with the occasional quiet day) and this can only be good for us as an organisation.

The remaining week had us messing about with bubbles in null-sec, some gate camping and more roaming fleets. As pirates, we tend to fly with whatever and whoever so plenty of solo and duo-fleets head out from Evati. Not for us where no-one undocks unless there's a fleet of 50+ with logistical support! Hell no, we're pirates and we have to eat so we go with what we have!

It just so happened that BracerKirk and Tibbs on one of these roams spotted and killed something....amazing. I don't even know what it is or why it was sitting where it was at but am going to give them each a medal.

Please look at the kill of a CCP 'Cockroach' and the 'enigma' loot.

++UPDATE++
The latest drunk roam for me kicked off with some of my fellow fleet mates already well drunk by the time I linked in. Mirtillo was slurring into the communications while Dam1987 was being drunk and Scottish: a fearsome combination. There were some new faces there but within minutes we were all fast (and drunken) friends. Shizraak, one of my old drun roam attendees was absent due to some illness. The best cure is alcohol my dear Shiz!

So we compared notes on what we were drinking and insulted each other as nicely as we could about our choices. I was actually mixing my drinks but had settled on that old stand-by: Disaronno and coca-cola.

Drink of choice

The Incursion
What happens when an incursion appears, there's alcohol sloshing around and the pirates are bored? Well carnage. As our first outing, we decided that we would rush straight into the Sansha incursion and see just how hard these Sansha chaps were. They were appearing in space like the poverbial bogeyman and sucking up hapless citizens into their ships. That simply wouldn't do!

So we undocked in our ships (I forget which one) and warped to the beacons; so many Sansha about and aggressive too. My ship arrived amidst a see of red - an incursion fleet was in full flow. I ordered targets to be locked and fired and before I even finished, a spikey Sansha battle ship volleyed my craft into pieces. All around me, my drunken fleet mates were sliced to pieces. The alcohol played its part: dulling our senses and responses but still, the power of the incursion fleet was most impressive. After losing one too many ships we thought that we should now go on a roll.

I decided on a bait maller and called it (cunningly) as 'bait'.

We set destination to be Ardar and left via Arnher.

The Camp

Well, one jump out and there was a camp on the Evati gate in Arnher. It looked like members of Dark-Rising (now out of the Executives alliance) in a fleet of perhaps a dozen battle cruisers and support. Even drunk, I still retained enough wits about me. I ordered the fleet to burn back towards the gate and sure enough, the [-Dark] fleet went red on all of us. However, their alpha damage was quite poor, or did they not concentrate on primary and ended up spreading their damage? Either way, we all managed to get out. Result! One for the drunken bastards!

The vomit then the tackle
At this point, Mirtillo announced that he was going to vomit and off he chundered.

The Second Camp
After our brush with Dark Rising, the fleet wandered up towards the Hagilur pocket - always fun as EVE-Uni has made it one of their low-sec PvP 'summer camps'. We warped around here and there and didn't manage to entice the Unistas so I offered to move around a bit more.

After several attempts at reading the map, I figured out where I needed to go - into Miroitem and straight into another camp. This time is was held by the infamous 'Negative Ten' alliance who promptly destroyed my ship and smart bombed my drunken arse back to Evati. Take a note Dark Rising: that's how to camp a gate.

More Alcohol
With myself being podded, it should have cleared my alcoholic fugue, right? No. I was still drunk when I emerged from the cloning vat. I cannot remember anything else from the roam; apart from applauding someone for throwing up (live) on the vent server and some other madness. I think I probably insulted everyone I could think of too and no doubt, most of this was recorded onto vent.

Which reminds me, there's a four hour drunken roam recording that TheHermit has stashed somewhere. I shudder to think what is on it...
I have had much interest from people so thank you so much! My liver will try it's best to withstand the punishment. I have some comical fits in mind and if anyone else has one; please send it to me or pop it under the comments. Remember, you will be drunk on the night so who cares?
I think I will be bringing a Bellicose to begin with then moving through my list of ships. I do have a maelstrom that is a bit of a shocker in terms of rig set-up so this looks like a great candidate too.

Date of the drunk roam: 3rd February 2012, Friday Evening, starting from 20:30 in the Metropolis Region Low-Sec, exact details to those who are coming will be passed on when in fleet. Be in the 'INDEPENDENCE' in-game chat channel from 19:30 onwards please. We will rolling around until we pass out (which for me will be very soon!) or we run out of ships.

The Bastards are fortunate to have a number of excellent FCs and after Penelope's recent article in Eve-Tribune I have had many evemails from people wanting more information. For now, I would like to go through Penelope as it was her article that opened up this conversation. However, I have been in the process of putting together a simple FC guide for The Bastards since early 2011 because we have a lot of new pilots and I encourage my pilots to step up, lead a fleet, go out and 'just do it'. This usually is the only rule I have for budding FCs; you learn by doing. No amount of theory crafting will suffice. I will post up snippets in this here blog for all to enjoy (or critisise) and for general comment.

When Can I Fly My Tornado?
Lately, we've been busy having a fight all over Metropolis and our KillBoard hasn't been able to keep up: the new updates with the latest patches (new ammo) has broken the KB. However, I love the new Neocom and other UI changes. The much anticipated AF changes too. All wonderful stuff and makes a space ship flying pirate like me, very happy in the pants. Of course, this still means that I am distracted enough not to bring out my Tornado, apart from a few POCO bashes this month. I am also looking for a close range face melter and it appears that the Talos fits the bill? Comments please as I want to benefit from other pilots' expertise and experience.
The Bastards have been active from the very first day of 2012 - our neck of the woods has been extremely busy with corporations and alliances either setting up shop or passing through Evati. All great for our line of business. Nearby we have Eve-university in Hagilur / Dudreda (they apparently have a 'war' on with the infamous RvB alliance), we have Eve-Union come rolling around setting up POCOs and responding to their attacks with their usual numbers and tactics, close by there are chaps from TEST alliance, clustering around the entrance points to Geminate and Vale and we've even seen some White Noise(dot) fleets wander through. All wonderful stuff for us. Nothing keeps a pirate happy than activity and loot and this month has been super fun. Long may it continue.

I did miss a sanctioned fleet this thursday - I was all for attending but a last minute issue prevented me from leaving work, but the chaps appeared to have a successful night as per the kill board summary which makes my absence sting even more. I could have brought out my tornado after all!

2012 seems The Bastards back with all guns blazing. December of last year, after much negotiation - we entered into an agreement with our erstwhile rivals, Los Chupababras. Despite the hispanic name, the majority of the chaps are Italians. A link-up with joint fleets and comms was organised and tentatively, we went out as a combined fleet. The results, I have to say, have been very pleasing and lucrative for both groups. Now, instead of hunting each other we would go after other targets usually in a combined fleet of between 12-20 ships. A nice number, large enough to take on most things in low-sec but small enough to avoid the much bigger (usually null-sec aligned) groupings. It has been six weeks now and things are just getting better. Certainly, the response from all the pilots have been positive.

Now why did The Bastards agree to such a link up in the first place? Our patch of low-sec has seen an upswing of larger, more well organised groups roaming through. This is all well and good for low-sec space, long regarded by many as a barren desert of woe. However, for residents such as ourselves we frequently found ourselves out-numbered 3-1 or more. Now, when cornered we can and do fight as hard as anyone but our primary goal is to survive and hold the field so we can pick the loot and/or engage in one or two cheeky ransoms. If we can disengage and fight another day (preferably in the same ship!) then so much the better. So our choice was to adapt or be brushed aside and become irrelevant. We adapted and it has proven to be a good decision. Certainly, the board of directors at The Bastards have supported this. What? You didn't think that there were corporate structures at The Bastards?

POCO?

Let's blow it up....

We love POCOs? What on earth is that? Sounds like some medical term for a pimple on one's arse or a Californian pop group. In fact, it stands for 'Player Owned Custom Offices'. With the latest (wonderful) release of the Eve client, this was one of many new features added and thereby enriching us all.

OK, so why the love for them? Well, we've managed to get plenty of fights after knocking one or two of these chappies down. They are similar to a small player owned stations (POS) without the guns. With no guns (or neutralisers, webbers etc) they are relatively 'safe' to engage. We have attacked a POCO with just two stealth bombers. It took ages but it is possible. Having the POCOs in our home system also means that we can ship up or down (or sideways) very easily as the situation dictates.

You knock down the POCO's shields (usually 10,000,000 HP) and it drops into reinforced mode for a period of approximately 24 hours. When in this mode, it is invulnerable to all further attack. This gives the owner time to gather personnel to repair the shields once it leaves reinforced. The timer is visible to anyone in local and of course, the attackers also know when the POCO leaves reinforced.

So 24 hours later, and cue fights. Or not.

Either way, The Bastards regard the presence of POCOs as an opportunity to harass and annoy as well as setting up an environment for a fight. Since we live in Evati, we can easily jump into battle cruisers (or stealth bombers) or the yummy new tier-3 battle cruisers and batter a POCO. A small fleet (about 10 ships) can get a POCO down in about 15 minutes. Since we're not a big alliance, this works out beautifully when we're waiting for a fleet to get established, pilots to come back from being afk or if it is a particularly quiet night.

Speaking of a quiet night - I don't think we've had one in since the new year. My first blog entry in January comes on the 16th day and this is because everything has been just so damn busy and fun. The first year started off with kills galore and while I don't want to go through kills (and losses) in any detail, though some memorable events do come to mind including a crazy evening when we engaged an EVE-UNION fleet (after we had reinforced one of their POCOs) which then pulled in both Shadow Cartel and Black Soul Industries. Unfortunately for The Bastards, we were caught in the middle. EVE-UNION has a video available here of the night's fight from their viewpoint.Another night, Marco and I were chucking torps at another POCO and it was late for both of us. We were so tired we practically fell asleep made worse by 1) still having a GCC and 2) warping to a gate and not jumping instantly. Needless to say, we both lost our hounds, much to my horror (but only after I woke up) - very surprised that no-one actually took the opportunity to pod me!

In between these POCO bashes we've been roaming around. The population in this section of low-sec has increased significantly and it is most likely due to the presence of 100s of TEST alliance pilots, now relocated to Otosela so they can base their strikes into Vale of Silent and Geminate Regions. What fun.

So, I do make an offer to my fellow pirates in the Metropolis / Molden Heath / Heimatar region: we are more than happy to set-up a fight on numerous POCOs and we would greatly welcome the extra muscle that some of our bigger friends can bring. Please contact either me, TFS Tibbs, Marco Drack or TheHermit for more details please.

The Bastards will remain a medium sized corporation so we can't bring in dreads and carriers without bankrupting ourselves as we're poor pirates. Unless there's someone with deep pockets who can give us all the capital ships we need?

No?
Thought so.
I have had the usual stack of administrative tasks assigned to me and this included the unpleasant (but necessary) task of booting inactive members from the corporation. We've had some chaps who have not been online for well over 12 months and not a word to anyone if they're coming back. So the corporation is slimming down drastically in Q1, 2012. We're also going to be restocking our ship hangars with shiny kit and I just have to set up a roam with mainly tier-3 battle cruisers. I know many corporations have already done this with excellent results.
We were honoured to have Penelope Starr, a writer for Eve-Tribune with us for a bit leading up to the new year. She wanted to find out more about low-sec piracy and fleet work for an article and I was happy to contribute. Her excellent article: 'The First Rules of Target Calling' is a great read. Highly recommended.

Tornado, love it.

Crucible
With the introduction of the new tier-3 beasties; the battle cruiser class ships has definitely been given a boost. There are rumours that the tier-3 are all over-powered but we've killed a fair few already so I don't think they are over-powered - yet. I have undocked in my tornado a few times and loved it but never had a chance to fly it out in a fleet. I am also busy thinking up of a counter-fleet for these beasties and armour hac gangs comes to mind. Of course, I am happy for my idea to be challenged but would be interested in hearing from other pilots what their thoughts are on countering these beauties (apart from an even bigger fleet - am interested in the rock, paper, scissors approach).

However, it doesn't mean that all the tier-1 and tier-2 battle cruiser ships are now relegated to a secondary role. Oh heavens no. Due to the much higher cost of the tier-3, one can still get 2-3 tier-2 battle cruisers, rigged and fitted for the same price of the tier-3. A fair trade in my opinion.

As a pirate, being isk-efficient is paramount to long-term survival and The Bastards still fly with the tier-2 battle cruisers as our main ship-of-the-line.

Still, I cannot ignore that Crucible has been a magnificient expansion with little tweaks and fixes here and there as well as some wholesale changes. Hell, CCP even decided to give us some christmas presents! I decided on the CA-2 implant but then realised that I never did pick up the CA-1 implant! (doh)

The Last Four Weeks - FOR MIKE!

So, what has been going on in the world of The Bastards? A busy period for us for sure; the month of November and December have been especially active and this has coincided with our decision to work more closely with our erstwhile rivals, 'Los Chupacabras' who live in the station opposite us. Now, like all good pirates we've been tussling for space and loot since their appearance about two years ago and would occasionally work together when the circumstances required it, I mean when a carrier is tackled you just have to put aside your differences and pile in don't you? In fact, there was an embryonic relationship between The Bastards, Los Chupacabras and Mean Coalition already forming as a response to a concentrated (albeit brief and unsuccesful) effort by a bunch of anti-pirates in cleaning up Heimatar and Metropolis earlier this year. Since then, Mean Coalition has wandered off into null-sec and hold some space somewhere in Vale.

Anyway, I have had the pleasure of leading our new composite fleets the last month or so and I must say, the results are immensely satisfying. One of our outings was into Helgatid after a scout of ours (love having them in the opposition camp!) reported back that Shades of Gray alliance were business demolishing a Customs Office and putting up one of their own. Even better, they had a few of the tier-3 battle cruisers out and smattering of cruisers and support ships.

We rumbled our ships across to the Helgatid gate and held as I waited a few more seconds for the fleet to assemble. Then I gave the order to jump and warp straight to the Custom Office in question. The sudden jump in local now doubt was noted; I didn't have any heavy tackle with me - but I did have MaxUrsa in his Stiletto! We arrived and the Shades of Gray pilots were already aligning but we wanted to grab the bigger ships: the tornado, the talos and some battle ships. I called my targets and proceeded to fire on them. With tracking disruptors fitted, the large calibre weapons on the talos and tornado could not hit much of anything. All the Shades of Gray smaller ships fled the field, leaving the larger ships to fend for themselves. I think this was a mistake; their cruisers should have stayed and kept some of us pointed. Anyway, now we had to be quick as this was the home system of Shades of Gray and no doubt, we expected them to ship up and to come straight back out. Local was also in their favour as I counted about 30 other pilots. Ordering the fleet to overload our weapons we popped the enemy ships sequentially with no loss of ships on our side. We didn't even have logistical support but we held to our motto of 'Overwhelming DPS, then GTFO!' Grabbing all the tasty loot we expected a counter attack and I started to align the fleet out.We didn't want to get caught with a cargohold full of loot now did we? We had families to feed.

The fleet battle summary is here.

Oddly, no counter-attack came. It looks like most of the pilots in local were away or decided that discretion was the better part of valor and stayed put. No problem, a wise decision especially if one isn't organised. We saluted the Shades of Gray pilots and left local, eager to divvy up the loot. Oh, this unfortunate Stiletto was caught by Max and Marco. I don't think it was part of the Shades of Gray but it was caught anyways. Actually, Shades did come back out this time with BCs and BS class ships to continue the destruction of the Custom Office. We thought it was a trap but maybe I should have ordered our ships back in?

Another fleet, a week later was just as much fun but involving the Eve University. Our fleet was actually split up across multiple systems but Marco, King, Nicho and Beauty found themselves in the Hagilur pocket. Eve University were around and they couldn't resist taking a bite out of Marco and co. They jumped him while I listened in on communications. It seemed quite even but a scout (spy) told us that Eve University had dozens of active pilots in the system next door and were already undocking battle ships and blackbirds to assist in Marco's take down.

So we moved in, my timing was a bit off however as we arrived on top of Marco and his assailants before their Eve Uni help could assist. Nonetheless we took them all down, failing to catch their frigates that had warped in as well as losing point on their blackbird and (to my disappointment) one of their battle ships that wisely came in at range, turned tail and fled.

Well done to the Unistas for disengaging smoothly.

A day or so later, another combined fleet engaged some of the most fun-loving pirates in New Eden - 'The Defenders of Pen Island' in Arnher. I wasn't there but I was told it was a fun, and rather one-sided affair. However, we're all pirates and not knights of old, no hard feelings. We want loot and isk and the ability to hold the field so that we can also salvage. Nothing more. It's all about the isk. Am sure the Pen Island chaps understand this fully. There are two battle summaries from our side: The Bastards and Los Chupabras. Ernie, from Los Chupas also made a video but he has been roundly lambasted for having a terrible overview and having no music!

Once again, salutations to our fellow pirates of Flashy Red for a good tussle.

With christmas festivities on the horizon, it was time for the annual pre-christmas roam for The Bastards. What do you mean you don't celebrate christmas in New Eden? Bah - humbug. Yet more Eve university fun as I led another fleet out; this time with Penelope Star of Eve-tribune fame in tow. We also invited Mike Azaria (check his blog out here) to the fleet who was going to bring a sacrificial tornado to add to the fun but he had to drop out. We promised to lose the tornado and fight 'For Mike!'. Alas, we fought but the tornado stubbornly stayed alive. Next time Mike, next time.

Anyway, we found some Unistas and promptly overwhelmed them on the Dudreda gate. Nothing gallant about it, we just battered them. No idea why they were camping the gate - I never realised that they had pirate tendencies? Ironically, we weren't even after the Unistas - they were in our way as we were en route to ambush another fleet thanks to a tip-off by a friend in the nearby system of Arifsdald. These chaps, Obsidian Front were busy bashing a Customs Office and while they are over 130 AUs from our ingate, we were assured by a friend that they were not aligned.

So we piled in and groaned as we entered into warp towards our targets 133 AUs away. It seemed to take forever and already, our friend had told us that our target ships were aligning to get out. We landed and threw points onto the tier-3 battle cruisers (our 'kill-as-many-tier-3-battle-cruiser' competition is still running!) and grabbed four of their ships. A carrier also landed but without enough neutralisers or a heavy interdictor we couldn't pin it down long enough to kill it. Bumping by us just plain failed. A pity. Still, loot was gathered and no losses so success in my books.

Right after this engagement we rested just off a gate when we spotted a Vigil sitting about 230km from us. Now, I am not paranoid or anything but this chap shouted 'SCOUT!' and I did not want to get dropped by anyone. We had a cloaked ship sneak up to the vigil pilot and then I sent that crazy Dutchman, Dil'e Mahn to do the deed. He locked, pointed and killed the hapless frigate.

Of course, locking the pod and killing him with everyone on the killmail was a requirement but the chat in local was a bonus.

Theseus kingslayer > where did you all go?
Theseus kingslayer > i brought back a noob ship for you to shoot at this time
Dil'e Mahn > excellent
Theseus kingslayer > you bunch of bored idiots
Dil'e Mahn > we'll see if we can fit you into our busy schedules
Theseus kingslayer > a vigil for all that effort..
Theseus kingslayer > i don't know...
Dil'e Mahn > a man's gotta eat, a wise man once said
Nichonostra > I lack of anything else
Nichonostra > ur vigil was AWESOME
stockin > a spine?
Dil'e Mahn > check, I have one
Theseus kingslayer > there wasn't much in there you know
Dil'e Mahn > it was there
Dil'e Mahn > it was cluttering up my overview
Dil'e Mahn > it just had to go
Dil'e Mahn > nothing personal, sir
Dil'e Mahn > just keeping space a safe and clean environment for everyone.
Theseus kingslayer > but you are the danger to space.. i was a neutral
Dil'e Mahn > all a matter of perspective, I'd say
Dil'e Mahn > what if a new player was flying around and accidentally ran into your vigil?
Shizraak > we aren't a danger to space
Shizraak > just the ships in it....
Dil'e Mahn > consider the material damages, trauma...
Theseus kingslayer > space is very big.. the possibility is almost 0
Theseus kingslayer > more like .00000000000000000000000000000000000000000001
Dil'e Mahn > still
Dil'e Mahn > that's more than "not at all"
Dil'e Mahn > I can understand your annoyance, but you have to understand that you cannot just go and park ships all over the place
ogf > all of the lag :/
Theseus kingslayer > so you all feeding your kids with scrap metal tonight from the vigil kill eh?
Dil'e Mahn > no, we were thinking of using the corpse for that
Shizraak > omnomnom
Theseus kingslayer > yeah, thanks for lagging out my computer by all getting in on a pod kill
ReBeLSKuLL > yummy tummy corspy in my tummy
ReBeLSKuLL > np, here, a souvenir for you! http://the-bastards.com/kb/?a=kill_detail&kll_id=22817
Dyrius Okel > YARR!!!!
Theseus kingslayer > only 17??
Theseus kingslayer > there were 20 of you
Dil'e Mahn > we tried to get more people on
Nichonostra > CARRRRRRRR
Theseus kingslayer > someone pulled the trigger too fast
Dil'e Mahn > yes
Dil'e Mahn > there's always one, isn't there
Nichonostra > It wasnt me
ReBeLSKuLL > sorry guys, i blew it
Dil'e Mahn > *sigh*
Dil'e Mahn > we discussed this, rebel
Dil'e Mahn > well, good day, sir
Dil'e Mahn > fly safe now
ReBeLSKuLL > good day, merry xmas :P
Theseus kingslayer > never
Dil'e Mahn > and remember: parking at a station is free.
Theseus kingslayer > alwasy fly dangerously

A day or so later; yet another fleet and we battered through Eve University; again our battle cruisers simply smashing through the out-matched students in their mixed cruiser / battle cruiser / interceptor fleet with no losses on our side. The report is here. It was only even in numbers as they were caught on a gate and couldn't use their better mobility and speed to exit the fight. Bad luck chaps. We're not singling out the Unistas, honest! However, it does look like low-sec roaming is part of their current school curriculum and long may this continue but please fit better mods so that we can loot it!
KING and NICHO - the deadly duo.
After a 12 month absence, where they came close to being released from The Bastards, these two deadly pirates came back into our orbit and the first thing they both said was, 'what can I kill?' In any organisation and in all fleets, you need some pilots who are willing to engage almost crazy odds. Where fear isn't a word they recognise (or common sense!) and they go literally, balls to the wall. Pilots like these galvanise the rest of the organisation and inspire people to get active and to join in. I love these guys and they are HUNGRY and aggressive. Do not take your eyes off them for a second and like salvering, starving wolves, they can be forced (by their very nature) to go after prey in the most difficult (silly) circumstances as illustrated below.

King, in his Dramiel spotted an Ibis sitting on a station, minding his own business. Now in low-sec, of course you have to take care and one cannot rely on the station and gate guns to protect you. However, when you're being buzzed by a dramiel, it is unlikely that an any aggressive action will occur right? Especially for an expensive Dramiel for a lowly Ibis?

No. King, decided to fire on the Ibis and pop it.

In a dramiel, right under the noses of the automated sentry guns? Surely not? King is a good pilot and was already aligned and full speed but well, something didn't work out.

http://the-bastards.com/kb/?a=kill_detail&kll_id=22759

Still, these two guys are invaluable members of the team and if you see either of these two in local, beware and looking at the killboards I can see that they continue to be busy even in the christmas break!

Future plans

We are continuing to recruit pirates and will welcome more in 2012. Our recruitment thread is here. If you want to experience the pirate life, play Eve in 'super hard mode', then look no further.

There will be a drunk roam organised, I thought it would be very unwise for me to organise one this side of the festitivies as I doubt very much my liver can handle it. However, there should be one organised in January 2012 and I will have one of our drinking captains (Shizraak) be the secondary fleet commander, God help you all.

However, to all my friends, enemies and customers - I wish you all a merry christmas and a peaceful and restful new year. The Bastards will be back in 2012, reloaded and rebooted and rested. I cannot wait.

Of course, a christmas greeting from The Bastards needs a jolly white fat man with a beard dressed in red and trimmed with white fur, so here it is:
With the new tier-3 battle cruisers hitting the markets, Vegas wanted to inject some fun and excitement into the month and he came up with an idea. Here's his post from our forums (shameless content padding I know!!):
Now, I actually took receipt of a new Tornado class battle cruiser a few days ago and fitted it with T2 800mm repeating artillery pieces but am a tad worried about losing it. I saw how these things can melt oh-so quickly under concentrated fire. In any fleet we come up, these things will be primary. Other fleets we meet up will probably do the same thing. I wonder if one can make a bait tier-3 battle cruiser?

Anyway, we had a tremendous amount of fun last night bagging another two more such battle cruisers along with a handful of battle ships. Give and take during the evening for sure but that is the fun of New Eden right now, the new upgrades certainly have given pilots a shot in the arm. Am in the process of writing it up last night's fun and will update the blog soon with new content.Flashfreshhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06590735382048624006noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-36546065.post-14389733783979844292011-12-02T23:46:00.001+00:002011-12-07T13:50:39.531+00:00Winter Expansion, the fury of a Tornado and the Oracle speaks....So the winter expansion is here and I love it: ships, fonts, nebulae to name three. However, I will leave the analysis of this most wonderful of expansions to another time; let's talk about piracy!

Seeing Tibbs fly the Tornado within hours of the BPO being made available was a great. I was honoured to see this brute fly and destroy a poor unsuspecting Vexor. It didn't survive a concentrated double volley from this monster.

Of course, being pirates we had to come up with something relating to killing and it was Vegas who offered up a competition: the most kills of the new tier-3 battle cruisers would get their choice of any tier-3 battle cruiser (Naga, Tornado, Oracle or Talos) - what a prize!
The evening kicked off with a few kills by our mixed fleet: a raven, a drake etc but then we had reports of at least one, maybe two tier-3 battle cruisers! They were in Todifrauan and we just had to pay them a visit! z0de went off ahead with his megathron, determined to get a piece of the action; as he approached - he gave us an update:

"Two oracles!" Oh sweetness I said, surely a worthy target for us. The z0de added: "You do know it is bait and we're running straight into a trap?"

"Hell yes!" Chorused The Bastards, completely undaunted by death.

A pause and then z0de added:

"A Tornado, a hurricane, 'rax and some support." I glanced at our fleet: a typhoon, four hurricanes and a drake. That would do. We warped to the ingate though there was no call from z0de for us to jump in. The excitement started to build up.

"Ok, more are coming in. I think they want a fight!" shouted z0de as his weapons went active. We jumped and my overview filled up with targets. We were outnumbered at least 2 to 1. However, we had one target: any one of the three new battle cruisers. Scared? hell no.

z0de called the targets as we got range on the Oracle. Our guns barked and shells, rounds, missiles and drones streaked out. The enemy, mainly from the Shades of Grey Alliance answered back with equal fury. Without logistical support, we could only rely on local buffer tanks and speed, completely inadequate but no, we had our target and nothing, not even our fiery deaths would stop it. Raelyf, was the first to go down, the calm pirate merely muttering 'Raelyf, down,' as his hurricane was torn to shreds, the fate of being set to primary.

To my port side, and slightly below was the battle cruiser of TFS Tibbs, one of the best solo pirates that The Bastards have. He had at least five ships surrounding him and he was trading furious broadsides with them all. However, once his shield generators burnt out, it was only a matter of seconds before terminal hull breach.

"We're burning up!"

A screaming missile buried itself deep inside the drake's superstructure before detonating.

"Tibbs is down." Two pirates down.

"More incoming, shit a Loki and a Talos and Dramiel. Kill the Dram, kill it! I am scrammed." It sounded like z0de or Marco but it was difficult to hear due to the sub-space distortions from the many weapon system types all firing. From my position, I could see Red Vegas in his hurricane started to drift sideways as his engines were blown out from behind him. He and his crew continued to fire, even when they had time to punch out.

"Steady lads! We can kill them!"

A caracal swept past my hurricane, I ordered my gun crews to target it as well as a thorax that was within optimal range. I opened up with my howitzers just as Red Vegas' hurricane disappeared in a flash of light and debris. My hurricane rocked as the shockwave washed over me. I hit the micro warp drive to get some range as I was being yellow boxed.

"Vegas is down." The voice was garbled and I just caught sight of a battered capsule racing off. There was little sign of any crew escape launches however - most must have been caught up in the conflaguration and were atomised.

Three pirates down.

The Oracle battle cruiser wasn't going down, whatever was installed for it's shield tank was not dying. Fair play to the engineers who had fitted this beast together. z0de switched primary to the Tornado and he started to give chase in his megathron! Marco in his typhoon followed, his engines glowing white hot as it pushed the venerable Minnie battle ship ahead and after both the Tornado and z0de's megathron.

Meanwhile, we had scored a kill on an enemy Hurricane, thorax and a caracal but no Oracle or Tornado! So a poor trade. The battle space was thick and crowded. Bits of flaming space junk spinning away.

Edney, also in a hurricane tried to get out of range of the fire from the Loki, Oracle and Talos but he was hopelessly outgunned and couldn't return adequate fire. Warp scrambled and blind, Edney tried to ram the nearest enemy ship, ploughing through the remains of Tibbs' drake wreckage and determined to go down while taking something with him. Alas, it was futile and he and his crew blasted out in their capsules and escape pods as the hurricane exploded.

"Edney down."

Four pirates down. It was looking grim for The Bastards.

"Shit, there's still more of the them." Muttered Marco as he surveyed the enemy ships around him and a couple warped in. Already, his capacitor was dangerously low and he had little left to fight back but he kept up the pursuit along with z0de.

Red klaxons flashed as I was warp scrambled by a dramiel (are they still viable?) and taking fire from one of the two Oracle, the Tornado, vagabond and few others. I tried to drop below the plane and ordered my drones onto the dramiel. Speed and some nifty flying might get me out of this. Meanwhile, z0de and Marco, still in pursuit of the Tornado had the enemy battle cruiser down to structure but it was too late: z0de's megathron was on fire in at least six places and half of his guns burnt out and useless. Ploughing ahead, z0de didn't give up.

I watched helplessly as battle ship calibre weapons zeroed in me and battered my hurricane to pieces. Without any logistic support or a local active tank, I was doomed. My micro warp drive was offline thanks to the dramiel and I was being battered. I whipped out my pod but could see z0de and Marco (both ships now on fire and shedding molten metal) still in hot pursuit of the Tornado.

"Flash is down. Good luck gentleman, die well!"

With a roar, both z0de and Marco overloaded their engines in a last ditch attempt to close the gap and make our first kill of the new class of battle cruiser. It was a brave but foolish attempt as the last two Bastards attracted the full attention of the enemy fleet and they were atomised.

The report ends with success: a fleet from Black Soul Industries (I think) piled into EM and Shades soon after our demise and managed to kill off the Tornado amongst other ships types. .

Why doesn't New Eden have a super low-fi and lite version for their interface? I say this because my main rig blew up on tuesday night. My only back up was my battered work laptop and man, was it struggling, even with everything else turned down to low.

I need something even simpler than the lowest setting on New Eden, yes - I need wireframes and DOS based graphics. I need.....Elite.

Check this out, some of you may even be old enough to remember the glory of this most influential game - the super graphics, the game-play and the vastness of the universe, replicated perfectly each time. All for under 64K of RAM too. If EVE had an 'elite' setting, with super low and simplified graphics, I would be playing this setting all the time. Hell, I would be trying to play this on my netbook, my smart book even! Check out a screen-shot from a bygone era:
