My pie!!

I was asked to FC a small roaming gang on sunday night. We had a x2 ruptures, x2 wolf, x1 incursus, x1 crow, x1 stabber and x1 caracal. I felt confident that we would have fun and I was right, though it didn't go too well: a HAC gang had been probing for us and they caught us with our (my) pants down with half of us in a safe spot waiting for the scouts to respond.

Just as we were leaving, this HAC gang snagged one of our ruptures - the rest had some distance already and could have warped out but we decided that since it was only one rapier we could take it. Of course, my 'well-honed' combat sense should have told me that more were on the way and indeed, two vagabonds, a jaguar and some others all piled into our little group. Needless to say, we failed to kill anything.

So scratch one rupture and incursus and wolf.

Sheepishly, I passed the FC over to someone else and warped home in my pod.

The night got worse. We lost the stabber and the second wolf due to a rather humerous episode. Instead of putting together a narrative, let me try and recraft the conversation between the stabber pilot (now FC) and the wolf pilot; moments before they were probed out.

Stabber pilot: "OK - scout, give me an update on any targets in the next system."
Crow pilot: "Roger that. On my way."
Stabber pilot: "We just sit tight and wait ok?"
Wolf and Caracal pilots: "Roger"

A minute pass.
Stabber pilot: "SHIT. My pie! My pie is burning!"
Wolf pilot: "Wha?"
Stabber pilot: "My pieeeeeeee!!!!!!"
Crow pilot: "Er..."
Stabber pilot: "Wolf is now FC. Going to rescue my pie! I think kitchen is on fire. AFK"
Line goes dead.
Wolf pilot: "Hello? Hello?"
Crow pilot: "Guys?"
Caracal pilot: "Must be an important piece of pie?"
Wolf pilot: "I want some pie too."
Crow pilot: "OK some targets in the next system, narrowing down."
Wolf pilot: "Check, check, check! Rapier de-cloaked close to us."
Sounds of auto canon fire.
Wolf pilot: "All ships scatter!"
Caracal pilot: "Going."

Wolf pilot realises that the stabber pilot is still afk, no doubt rescuing his dinner and decides to try and save the stabber pilot. Brave but the wrong decision. Both go down in flames. Another minute pass.
Stabber pilot (sounding relieved): "That was lucky, that pie was a ginsters pasty and they don't burn........what the hell?"
Wolf pilot: "Yeah...."
Caracal pilot: "How was the pie?"
Crow pilot: "Hope it was worth it."
Stabber pilot: "I lost a stabber -"
Wolf pilot: "and a wolf."
Stabber pilot: "For a ginsters pasty. Damn thing wasn't even burnt."

So the evening ended with a net loss of all but two ships, a failure in my books but every cloud has a silver lining and we did discover that the majority of the fleet (Bastards and Hellcats) had a fondness of pies, those pastry encrusted parcels of goodness, filled with a variety of meats from various parts of animals from all over the world.

My personal favourite is a STEAK and ALE pie, with lots of peas and chips on the side. Might have to do a poll and see what combinations other pirates have a hankering for.

Finally, some other pie related news: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/cornwall/7550563.stm - I hope Rodney (the stabber pilot) didn't have the misfortune to have such an addition to his pasty?

Back with a bounce.

"Time for a roam and blow some cobwebs out!" I said with some glee. The Alliance had returned from our jaunt in the Alliance Tournament - we did not make the next round as we didn't score enough points. Our win against KIA Alliance had helped us increase our profile and garnered us a lot of praise and notoriety. Certainly, the various email and evemail boxes are quite full and I have a long (but enjoyable) task ahead of me in sorting them out.

Oh, before I forget - those who sent in applications before the christmas break; so long as it wasn't rejected; you've been held in limbo all this time and I can only apologise. I have sent an email to each of you explaining the situation and how we best go forward. We were very busy with the alliance tournament preparation and we were trying hard to minimise any espionage and spying. Now that the Alliance Tourney is over for us; it's back to pirating. We had to say good-bye to a few pilots as they delayed their departure to assist us Bastards in preparation and training and we thank them and wish them the best of luck.

We will find you.....

With some hardware and software problems; I had trouble linking into my pod - the technicians gave me some gibberish about something needing new firmware etc. I just decided to sit back with a fine bottle of brandy, a good book and no disturbances.

However, I was able to test out the upgrades last night - leading a small assault frigate gang into a low-sec pocket. Maltrox is a gank magnet and within seconds of entering a system the communication link went wild.

"I have a hit on a dominix and warping in!"

The frigate fleet was split across three systems in order to find targets so we raced towards the gates to rejoin with Maltrox. We shouldn't have bothered.

"Crap. He was stabbed." Said Maltrox; his voice thick with disappointment.

We tried to chase but the dominix pilot wisely slunk his way around the gates and stations; with the sentry guns offering him protection. The frigate hulls would have been pulverised by them if we wanted to initiate hostilities within range of them.

The first part of the roam was over as we returned to base for a refit.

"Five minutes and we roll out. Get a bio-break, a snack or a ship refit." I said to the fleet now docking up.

Once the five minutes were up, the fleet was re-organised and zoomed out into the black and soon; we had scanned out a missioning tempest. Like a pack of rabid animals, we warped to our covert-ops and then unleashed hell. Our frigates (basic and assault variants) buzzed around the huge form of the tempest spitting our fury. The pilot was clearly bemused when we ransomed him - he accused us of using some sort of hack to prevent his ship from escaping. We laughed and asked for some isk to let him go. The ransom went well and reasonable and we each in the fleet became 10million isk richer. Some would say we should have went for more but meh; 10million is 10million!

We then moved on, the hunt continuing with a few more kills and ransoms before our return.

Another frigate roam a few days later involved me, Hera and Fenneck. Kerblammo was also with us in a double-plated Maller but he followed some jumps behind and as luck would have it; it was Blammo who found targets. He was first ambushed by a rapier than an inty and finally a 'cane. We were too far away to assist but Blammo just thought it was fun as his hastily patched together maller came apart around his ears.

Without the irrespressible Kerblammo we continued down and bumped into a massive tribal militia force; I warped towards the top planet and a caracal (not attached to the militias) - he landed on top of my rifter. I called my two companions to assist as I snapped on the warp scrambler and started to cycle up my auto canons.

I had the caracal down to 1/3 shields when Fenneck and Hera warped in with their interceptors. I then warped out my armour smoking. My two friends took the rest of the caracal apart. Chancing my luck, I went to another planet and orbitted it. This time, I attracted a wolf-class assault frigate.

Not good. The firepower of this beast is legendary. I snapped on my webber and held him there as I tried to get out it's way. I failed as his first volley took all my shields off and then bit deep into my armour. My response wasn't too shabby either; the triple 150mm auto canons speaking back with EMP.

Then the wolf pilot drew out his ace: a falcon.

The much feared EWAR recon cruiser decloaked and his powerful jammers avalanched over my puny systems. I was rendered blind and the only option was to run however, the fall off of the wolf's weapons enough to clip my port-side engines and shatter it. I spun helplessly as the wolf then helped himself to seconds and utterly destroyed my rifter.

Fenneck and Hera had come in and ran for their lives as more ships warped in; Fenneck just getting out with no armour and near hull breach in several locations.

I whipped my pod out and quickly docked up - fully intending to rejoin the fight.

It was at this time that the GalNet comms channel went utterly mad and I could see why:

'Band of Brothers Alliance had been disbanded'

All thoughts of continuing with the roam ended as I sat back down and ordered room service and a high-bandwidth news feed. The news was quite shocking and while the corporation and pilots that made up BoB were still active, the alliance (and hence sovereignity) was now, to all intents, dead. This was a massive shake-up of nullsec alliance and the power-blocs there.

It would be interesting to see how this plays out. The Goons, to ensure that there would be maximum pain gained at the expense of BoB; created a corp called Band of Brothers - thus preventing any new alliance to be created (or recreated) under that name. However, the corporations that were members of BoB could easily reform under the banner of a new alliance and then attempt to kick out the interlopers.

Anyway, we all are living in interesting times....

Frigates, frigates, frigates everywhere.....

'Frigate operation and roam. 21:00 EVE Standard Time. RoninData'

That was the message on the channel as I linked in. I glanced at the chronometer and I had 15 minutes. Checking my hangars, I had five rifter-class frigates, two wolf-class and two-jaguar class all loaded, fuelled and ready to roll. The fleet was being set up and pilots all linking in, most appeared to be wolf and jaguar and ishkur pilots.

No T-1 hulls I thought to myself and therefore opted to balance out the T2 goodness by readying the venerable T1 rifter hull. There was general excitement and anticipation from the pilots assembled. Sarge was outside, roaring about in his stiletto-class interceptor and decided to tackle a crow-class interceptor who took a shine to him. There were about seven other fleet members outside but who could not engage due to possible gate gun fire.

"Go get him Sarge!" Cheered the assembled crew.

"Slag him!"

The two interceptors duelled each other at high speeds, zipping in and out of each other's orbits. There were puffs of flame and leaking atmosphere from both ships - the rockets and missiles from the crow eating into Sarge's thin frame while he replied with concentrated auto canon fire; peppering the Caldari ship's own hull.

"Shit, this is going to be cloooooosssssseee!" Said Sarge, and we all willed him for an extra volley or a lucky shot. There was a flash of light and Sarge's stiletto burst into pieces with his capsule whipping out.

"Good fight!" Congratulated Sarge to BlackShadow007, a well deserved reward for an enjoyable fight.

"Great. We're about to roll and I was hoping you would our scout Sarge." Observed RoninData.

This was greeted by guffaws and laughs. The time for the operation kick off was in five minutes and as customary, we were not quite ready. We still had pilots linking in and San was five minutes away moving some stuff and a few were AFK. With a sigh, RoninData postponed the op by 15 minutes. Those pilots that were ready, grumbled somewhat but amidst good natured joshing of Sarge on his loss; time passed quickly and soon a very impressive frigate gang was in place.

Floating outside like a swarm of angry wasps. Now the frigate class includes the traditional T1 frame, the assault frigate class, covert ops, electronic attack ships and the interceptor class. We were missing covert ops but we reckoned that this was superfluous to what we wanted. Now, low-sec pirating usually involves a fair amount of gate and station fighting and the assault frigate class, of which this fleet was largely comprised of, does not last very long against the automated sentry guns. So tackling prey at gates and stations was not a possibility.

One could only hope that potential prey could initiate hostilities - but this still did not allow everyone else to jump in. Only the aggrieved. The only choice available was to engage at planets, belts and complexes - and other criminals of course of which there were plenty to be seen on any given night in Metropolis. So tough choices but something that we had to live with.

"Fleet: be ready to roll in five minutes." The fleet was joined by two familiar faces: Mynxee and Shae Tiann - the latter who came in bang on time, and was ready within 10 seconds. Pretty slick these female pirates. Soon, the fleet was ready - 30 minutes past the scheduled time; a definite improvement but what hell - we're pirates!

The fleet was:

San Rintu: Kitsune-class electronic attack ship;
Kulmid: Harpy-class assault frigate;
Mr Frog: Ishkur-class assault frigate;
Shae Tiann: Ishkur-class assault frigate;
euan8: Ishkur-class assault frigate;
Khaled Urduni: Jaguar-class assault frigate;
Mynxee: Jaguar-class assault frigate;
RnProphet: Jaguar-assault frigate;
Pacifist Priest: Retribution-class assault frigate;
Jorge Belda: Vengeance-class assault frigate;
Loth'nwenar: Wolf-class assault frigate;
Maltrox: Wolf-class assault frigate;
RoninData: Wolf-class assault frigate;
Jiremjahu Menasseh: Crow-class interceptor;
Thrac: Crow-class interceptor;
VB Sarge: Stiletto-class interceptor;
flashfresh: Rifter-class frigate;

17 ships.

A hell of a lot of DPS. Very vulnerable to smart-bomb packing ships. Still stung from our loss in EOA-ZC to the smartbombing Rokh, we vowed to be more careful. RoninData gave the order:

"Fleet this is Fleet Command: Destination has been set. Scouts move out ahead. One jump. All fleet; jump."

With multiple flashes the frigates leapt into warp space and it is so thrilling in seeing your fleet, barrelling alongside you in the warp tunnel. We were deposited in a group at the first gate, scaring the hell out of a number of industrial pilots. Sarge was ahead and fed back intelligence from what he can see. He found various ships, some at POS others hidden in deep spare. Jiremjahu assisted Sarge as well, moving into side systems but most of the ships were inside deep positions. More than once, we thought the presence of a covert-ops with a scan probe would have been a boon. Three times we had ships land at the same gate; we locked them, daring them to fire first but all of them held their nerve and jumped. The gate guns, silent, watchful and brooding kept their silence.

We roamed almost all the way down to Dal before the order was given to retrace our steps. With Kulmid joining the scouts, he entered Ardar first. Maintaining his gate cloak; Kulmid performed a customary scan.

"Fleet, this is Kulmid. We have members of the 'Drunk GanG' in local. He linked the pilot names and we digested the information. These chaps had taken us down, destroying Spectre only this morning. There were a total of five potential hostile pilots in Ardar local. "I see a megathron and 'geddon on scan."

"They'll be in battle ships and probably one or two falcons, if the gang is the same as before." Replied RoninData. "This fleet of ours should kill them."

"Really?" Muttered someone - clearly not believing the power of the frigate swarm. "Small frigates against a battle ship? Two battleships?"

"Yes indeed. We're too small for them to track." Said RoninData. "We have some ecm, tracking disruptors and webs."

"But what about smart bombs? You forgot about that Rokh in EOA-ZC?" Replied the concerned pirate.

"We just have to be careful now don't we?" I replied, silently hoping that no-one was packing any smart bombs. Kulmid then cut in.

"I think they're around planet III. Am going there to have a lookee."

With that, Kulmid jumped into orbit around planet III while the rest of the fleet was clustered around the entry gate - the atmosphere heavy with anticipation. The seconds ticked by as Kulmid counted down the time until the warp tunnel collapsed and deposited him at his destination.

"Warp tunnel collapsing in 5, 4, 3, 2,-" There was a hiss of static as Kulmid dropped back into real space.

"Contact. Contact. Contact. Megathron, pointing."

That was our signal to move. Like one swarm with a collective mind; all 16 frigates activated the gate and surged in like a tide into Ardar. As one, we all aligned to Kulmid.

"Contact! Contact! Geddon and second mega! Shit!" A burst of static cut in. " - down, going down. No cap. No cap. Fucking drones -" The rest was lost in garbled static.

We warped to Kulmid - who was now in deep trouble. "- mid down, Kulmid down. Watch out for them drones!"

As the fleet arrived, we saw Kulmid whipping out of the orbit. Now it was game time and it was thanks to Kulmid. Time to get some payback. My overview shimmered with new information being fed to me by my sensors as it picked up the signatures of the three vessels in front of me.

"Fleet. Primary: Nasiliy in his megathron. Secondary: Sikh. Tiertiary: Yarrino."

"Nasiliy pointed." Said Jorge, quietly efficient.

"Nasiliy webbed."

"Tracking disruptors on."

"Here comes the drones." Warned Loth.

"Shooting them!" Fired back Priest.

"They're fucking my drones!" Wailed Shae. My overview burst into life as it filled with drones from both sides swamped my GUI. I quickly re-sorted my overview but it was getting frantic with friendly fire.

"Drones on me! Drones on me! Help me!" Yelled someone.

"Who is that?"

"It's me."

"WHO IS ME?"

And so on. There was a burst of light and the armaggedon rammed it's sub-light engines into full burn and started to power away.

"Point and web the 'geddon! He's getting away." Yelled RoninData, now concerned that there was too many points on one target.

"I want Maltrox, Priest and Shae, points on Yarrino. Frog and Euan on Nasiliy. Jirem and Sarge on Sikh."

"Roger."

"Aye-aye."

"YAAARR!"

"Contact. Contact. Contact. This is Flash. Falcon de-cloaking, 150km. Pilot is 'Helllife' in Falcon." I said, as my overview winked on with a new target. A Falcon. Feared due to it's ability to render any ship useless through the much maligned electronic warfare modules.

"This is Sarge, and I am close to falcon. Burning towards him. Locking." I knew that Sarge was over-heating his afterburner in his effort to close the gap to the danger. I warped out to a planet as it would be quicker for me to warp to Sarge or someone closer then burning the 150kms.

"Jorge here: assisting Sarge. Burning towards the falcon."

"Jirem on my way to Falcon."

"Proph en route. Warping out and back in."

"You guys are team two!" Said Ronin, thereby allowing us to better communicate through the cacophony.

"Sarge here: I have lock and point. Warp to Sarge. Falcon pointed." Then there was curse and the sound of thumping." Jammed!"

I warped to Sarge, landing only 4km from the falcon, I snapped on my warp scrambler and fired as soon as my lock resolved. I had hot primed my auto canons and webber to fire as soon as the lock finished it's fix on the falcon. My auto canons spat out EMP shells at a furious rate.

The falcon pilot had too many targets to deal with; this is what we were planning on.

"Nasiliy is going down but I lost my point. Maintain point on the mega!"

Meanwhile back at the falcon, I saw that the falcon was cycling through all targets and soon I was hit by a wave of electronic noise, shutting down my computer. Jorge was on top of the falcon as was Jirem and Proph. They too, were jammed but managed to re-acquire locks and maintain the punishment on the falcon. My tough minnie electronic apparatus recovered, relocked and I too continued to fire.

"Contact. Contact. Contact. Second falcon. Second falcon!" OK, this was getting a bit complicated however, two frigates peeled off from the battle ships and chased after the second falcon. The FC designated this flight as team three.

There was a frantic shouting on the comms server. Voice discipline, while not always the best, began to break down.

"Voice discipline! Goddamn it." I said, but I was adding to the problem as much as trying to fix it. RoninData realised what was happening, cut through the chatter.

"Fleet; listen up - confirm points on targets."

"Shae, points on Nas."

"Jorge, points on Helllife."

"Loth, points on Yarrino."

"San, second falcon jammed."

"Priest, points on Sikh."

"Flashfresh, points on Helllife," and so it continued - each pirate confirming their target and through luck; there was no need to re-task any of the pirates with new targets. All hostile ships were locked down. The second falcon, suddenly realising the hopelessness, bugged out, temporarily leaving his compatriots to their fate.

"I think we can do this. Any ship with damage?"

"Loth here: no damage."

"No damage!"

"Flashfresh here: no damage." My rifter danced around the larger Caldari-made cruiser, its ECM modules blinking as it cycled and jammed our fleet. However, the punishment it had taken from us was evident in the numerous gashes and holes in it's hull. Many holes were leaking fluids and pumping precious atmosphere out. Its handling appeared to be increasingly erratic and some modules appeared to be off-lining. Our frigates buzzed around him, spitting our fury at him.

"Keep on Helllife in his falcon!" I said, the statement being so obvious that no-one answered but the rate of fire increased with more frigate-mounted missiles, shells and lasers lancing out towards the cruiser.

Not much to fear now eh? I thought to myself with some satisfaction.

My tactical computer shrieked as it detected a jam attempt from the stricken falcon. It was trying to align and get out and was using its remaining ECM ability to punch it's way out.

"Keep points on the Falcon! Points!" I roared.

"Lost lock!" Informed Jorge. "Re-tasking."

"Me too!" The frustration in Sarge's voice was clear. Frigate hulls are too small to fit enough ECCM to counter a dedicated EW boat such as a falcon or rook. All we could hope for was to swamp the falcon pilot with too many targets - more than it can jam and hold it down long enough with the remaining ships to kill it.

Helllife, initially concentrated on jamming the frigates attacking the three battleships but it was a costly mistake; this allowed himself to be trapped by the first anti-falcon team who managed to pile into him. Only now was he using his ECM and micro warp drive to extract himself.

"Flash still has lock." I said amazed that my warp scrambler was humming away and my guns running themselves dry. It would only be a matter of time before I was jammed again.

"Helllife has been jammed." Spoke San. He was our sole EW pilot in the Kitsune, still in the thick of the fight with the second returning, falcon and he came to us in the nick of time. I could imagine the frustration of Helllife, now realising that he too was jammed for a cycle; his targeting computers all going crazy on him as it tried to make sense of the electronic equivalent of a tidal wave crashing into it.

Team two swarmed in for the kill; and we took down the falcon. Once its shield systems were blown - our munitions then pummeled the ship into useless scrap. The pilot's pod managed to instantly whip out of the system.

"Falcon one is down." I said triumphantly as I re-aligned my ship back towards the main fight.

"Second Falcon is running!" Said someone from the team three. Sure enough, the second falcon, seeing the fate of his brother decided that he would have to leave his fleet mates to their fate and managed to get out a second time.

Only the three battle ships remained, looking huge and angry but now, so vulnerable.

"Primary is Nasiliy." Repeated RoninData as team two and three's frigates returning from their anti-ECM role were quickly re-tasked. The extra damage chewed through the first megathron, it's thick armour plating being slowly stripped off in flaming sheets. We had no interest in ransoms at the moment; we wanted to kill it and live off the loot that would drop.

With the megathron webbed, scrambled, partially jammed and completely unable to track the fleet-footed frigates and no drones to call it's own. This feared beast, and indeed the other two battle ships: a second megathron and an armageddon, would be dead very soon.

"Nasiliy is going down. He's going down!" Hooted Loth. We all wanted to see if we could provide the killing blow, the coup de grace. It was Euan8, in his close-range blaster ishkur who did it. His anti-matter hybrid rounds punching deep into the guts of Nasiliy's megathron and triggering a massive explosion. Buffeting us like chaff in the wind.

"Primary is down. New primary is Sikh."

Sikh, held down tight by another flight of frigates, suffered the same, ignomious death. It's guns simply too big and slow to track our frigates as we danced around him and slowly stung him to death.

Final target was Yarrino in the golden-hued Armageddon. It's mighty large lasers, hurled laser beams the size of palace columns, uselessly into space. Already, life pods were being spat out of the battle ship as his crew sensibly started to abandon ship.

"Ransom?" Asked someone.

It's usually customary for the last pilot in a hostile gang to be ransomed. A ransom midway through a fight is sure-fire way to a quick death so the last hostile pilot to remain, may expect some leniency if he doesn't escape.

"No. Show no mercy." Replied RoninData, mindful of exacting revenge for Spectre3353's loss earlier.

The hull of the armageddon cracked and then the ship broke apart, the inside of the ship blossoming like a new-born sun. The reactor had gone critical and the ship was consumed in a mighty explosion. Yarrino, expecting this, had already primed his pod to instantly warp out and we failed to catch him. No matter.

Once the flash of the armageddon's fiery demise had disappeared from our retinas - we started to cheer. Very loudly.

We held the field and gave a heart-felt 'GF' to the departing battle ship pilots. To the victor came the spoils and loot. One of them grumbled about us blobbing them, and yes, in terms of numbers our frigates out-numbered their battle ship & recon ships by 3 - 1 but even so; if they had coordinated more closely - concentrating their drones on just one of our frigates at a time for example - they would have slowly munched through us. If a ship fit cannot counter frigate-class vessels effectively; then you're always going to be in trouble. Smart-bombs, energy neutralisers, warrior II drones and tactics are some examples of anti-frigate warfare. Still it is easier to be a master tactician after a fight.

One can only assume that their communications was as frantic and chaotic as ours was.

Still, it was fun. A lot of fun.

LOOK OUT FOR THE SMART BOMBS.........

Umm yes, with the beginning of a new era in New Eden, dubbed as 'quantum rise' by some; 'crap' by others. We noticed some changes in our environment. Certainly, the star gates are now much improved: they have been under construction for such a long time that most people had simply ignored the building sites next to the existing gates. Other changes included enhancements to the pod GUI and other bits. There were also rumours of subtle changes in the underlying code used to control capsules that slowed down our responses. All need to be evaluated over the next week or so.

I noticed on our kill boards that there was a sudden increase in the use of assault frigate class ships. Certainly, I love this ship class, especially the Minnie ones (wolf and jaguar) based on the solid rifter hull. From all accounts, our pilots were testing and re-testing this ship class across all four racial ship types and I was asked to join yet another roving gang made up of only these fleet-footed killers.

"Time to roll: five minutes." Informed Kulmid, our FC for the night. I quickly scanned down my list of ships and settled on my wolf-class assault ship. I made some changes to it and had the ammunition locked and loaded. Was in space at the right time and updated my watch lists.

The fleet was nine-strong and I was greeted by a frigate-sized swarm made up mainly of other wolf-classes; two jaguar class, one harpy and one ishkur. Shae was in her taranis, named 'Unfinished Symphony'.

So off we went, with Kulmid barking out orders to us.

"Our destination is a 'bum rush' into null sec and the EOA-ZC gate."

Off we went, roaring into the inky vacuum with constant banter and chatter on the communication net.

Kills came quickly enough with a manticore and hawk going down very quickly. An unfortunate noob was also caught by us and ransomed for all his money, all 1800 isk. This was done by Kulmid, who gracefully let the bemused pilot go to much giggles and laughs. I actually felt bad and well, karma and all that and fate soon served us an appropriate dessert.

We stayed in EOA-ZC for too long, there was a myrmidon and harbinger buzzing us, tanking just long enough each time to jump back into low-sec. In AFs we could not possible kill a tanked ship under sentry fire but we should really have moved on. Instead, we hung about, circling the gate like vultures when a Rokh appeared on scan and then it warped close to the gate.

There were hoots and hollers and the assault fleet formed up, locking the shotgun-shaped ship quickly. For some reason I was 48km from the rokh and didn't get close enough when the surprise was sprung: smart bombs.

Oh, the deadly explosive pulse of these area effect weapons was devastating to the thin-skinned assault frigates, who relied on speed and their small signature radius to protect them. With smart bombs being lit off, there was no escape. We lost three ship instantly with one podding as well.

Fair play to the pilot (TheDisease?) who came in and pwned.

Now, why is the smart bomb thus called? It's not really a bomb and it's not smart either. It's more like an EMP Pulse generator. Whatever, it's pretty damn effective against frigates and drones and the like. Much humbled we ran back to get more ships; I was lucky and kept my ship and docked up to get some sleep while the rest of the crew came back out again; this time in battle cruisers and battle ships. However, it appeared that we came up empty handed.

Applications
We have welcomed some more applicants into the family and more applications continue to appear. Myself and Ard are doing our best to pile through another load of applications but we're on top of them. Many applicants do not read the instructions on the forum post. We need names on the subject line of the email you send us; otherwise we have trouble tracking all the emails.

Wolf Locked and Loaded

This is in one of The Bastards ship hangar. It just looks very scary and having x4 200mm ACs ripping into your hull at the same time too.

Love the wolf; a very hard hitting one-trick pony. Not as versatile as the jaguar or even the T1 variant, the Rifter. The wolf, amongst assault frigates, just wants to dish out the pain.

I think the above is credited to either Tibberg or San.

Musings of a Pirate - Part 8 - Pushing the envelope.

Being a pirate means you need to be very isk efficient. Am in this business to get rich at the expense of others, thus I need to fly something that is relatively cheap and easy to replace. Forget faction mods or a ship dripping in tech two goodies. However, expensive mods and rigs can give a pilot the crucial split-second advantage to win a contest, so it's always a balance. After bagging that freighter and machaerial, my luck changed appallingly.

While I view uneven odds as a given and challenge, I recently pushed my ship and my skills too far and in the last few days have lost a rifter, a wolf and a rupture.

My Rifter versus Rupture and Stiletto: Loss of Rifter but gain of a rupture.
This was an interesting hunt as my intelligence sources told me that they were both working together. The rupture and stiletto were playing the station hugging game and I decided to bring them out into a belt. With a gang of three, I jumped into Hrondredir. Surely a lone rifter was too obviously shouting 'bait' to them? The stiletto arrived and engaged me, I did not have the speed to kill him but he didn't have the damage output to make much of a difference. I informed the situation to some local pirates and waited for a response while I danced the complicated dance with Sahonen, the stiletto pilot. I was ready to take advantage of any mistake.

Then his friend in the rupture arrived.

The game was up. I switched my attention to the more dangerous threat of the rupture and the rifter gave a good account of itself but when it was down to armour, I knew that I was in trouble. I could repair the damage from the stiletto but not that and the rupture. DJ and Daplat (I think) now entered into local. The interceptor scampered off while the rupture smelling blood, managed to clip my port side engine nacelle and my rifter blew up. He stayed too long however, a flashing thorax entered into the belt and tackled the rupture. It was DJ in his thorax. Something very funny happened soon thereafter. The rupture pilot, fearing a podkill, ejected from his rupture and got away. I re-entered the belt and boarded the still smouldering rupture and piloted it away! I tasked one of my camera drones to take a picture of the still-on-fire rupture.

Details of the rifter kill.

My Wolf versus Deimos
Still chuckling from getting a 'new' rupture I docked in Gusandall. One of my contacts informed me that there was a ship inside the Angel plex. Now, normally, it is Kane Rizzel who patrols these plexes; ensuring them that it is clean of all interlopers. He wasn't around so I took the job. The wolf would be perfect, with it's formidable armament it will shred any other frigate or assault frigate into scrap. Feeling confident, I undocked and engaged the warp engines. It was a pity that I bounced off the warp gate into the plex and even worse luck that i fell into the embrace of a waiting deimos. Too big to go in, the heavy assault cruiser was sitting there with the sole purpose of snagging anyone trying to get into the complex. Fair play to him, I would do the same. My bad luck he snared me. My wolf did not last long as the hybrid blasters punched into it's frame and his five drones screaming all over it, buzz-sawing it to death. I was too close, in fact, I was inside the deimos' optimal kill-zone. Mercifully, it was over quick and here's the details for everyone's amusement.

My Rupture versus Cyclone, Crusader and Incursus
Still smarting from the loss of the wolf, I wanted revenge and Gusandall was proving to be most active. Even though the systems from Gusandall to Evati had pirate HQs and roaming gangs and solo operators; we still get many, many pilots and corporations going through it. Providing a constant source of combat but more importantly, isk. So, it was with interest that I spotted some new faces in local and undocked in my rupture (no, it wasn't the one I liberated) and proceeded to do what all pirates do: scan and get a closer, more accurate location of the prey. I picked up a cyclone, a rifter, a crusader, an incursus and another rupture. I had no idea if all the ships were in a pos or in a safe or running a mission. Not many pirates were active today, probably sleeping off the night before.

I managed to scan and pin down the crusader it to the top belt but the rupture, without sensor boosters, was woefully in-adequate for tackling the speedy interceptor.

Sitting in my scanning perch, high above the system plane, I managed to pin down the crusader a second time but no, I was too slow. I whipped into the top-most belt. Like most systems, the top belt (usually designated as 1-1) was the main area that people visited first. It's also the most obvious location for baits and traps and counter-traps.

I thought I was being smart and laying down the trap. Little did I know I was the bait and kill.

A cyclone came into the belt, plasma streaming off it's bludgeon-like hull. Excellent, I thought - time to chew into a battle cruiser then. I readied myself and locked him, reloading EMP into my auto canons. Then the crusader came back in, eagerness evident in it's hostile attack pattern and to add to my woes, a fanged incursus joined them. My ECM drones screeched out and attempted to do their work on the cyclone.

OK, not too bad but I better get some hits in I thought and I volleyed the cyclone. The cyclone replied with it's own volley, this time from it's much larger 425mm auto canons. My shields were ripped off in one salvo.

I wasn't expecting that. The cyclone pilot quite clearly knew what he was doing and I was past the point of being worried.

The Crusader was buzzing around me and the incursus was blasting at me as well. At least I wasn't jammed but the plated Ruppie couldn't cope with the DPS and the cyclone was FAST. I hit my own micro warp drive to get some distance and managed to get away from the incursus but the cyclone was on me and maintained it's range. It had a micro warp drive too.

I died very quickly.

Fair play to the other pilots but losing three ships was a blow and humbling. Hope my luck changes soon!

Lost the Wolfie and my trophies

There was an itch this morning and I had to scratch it. The itch was the desire to kill someone, anyone. I went in the wolf to do the deed. Does this make me a psychopath? Loot and riches was a distant second. All I wanted was to hunt someone down, see the mark in my gunsights and kill him.

So I roared out of Gusandall in my faithful wolf class assault frigate and did a quick local scan. Nothing around but not too surprising due to the time zone that we were in. I went into Eifer and my scanner picked up the unmistakable signature of a hurricane-class battlecruiser. I checked local and it appeared that the mark was probably 'Ovip Lokos'. A name that does ring a bell for me but wasn't too sure where. Jubes was the only other Black Flag corp member online and I fired up the comms to him.

"Jubes bro' you there? " There was a moments pause before the distinctive rumble of Jubes' voice came through.
"Hi - am here. Bit busy at the moment."
"I have a possible at IV-3, Eifer. Hurricane." I then fired off the name of the pilot to Jubes. As I aligned to the belt and got ready.
"Getting ship and will be there soon."
"Okay hurry, I don't think he will be hanging around." I hit the scanner to make sure he had not moved and no, he was still sitting around the IV-3 belt area. I hit the afterburner to get more speed and then jumped to the belt. I had a 24KM warp disruptor on and was going to sit around an orbit of 14km and keep him pointed. I landed in the belt and there was the Hurricane. It was looming and angry looking and know full well the intimidating effect the hurricane's clean, deadly lines has on opponents. Ovip Lokos did not hesitate to lock me, I was only 6km from him and whipped the assault frigate away from him, my afterburners glowing brightly. I had him pointed and was now moving into an orbit.
"Jubes: Hurricane pointed." I said and prepared to settle into an orbit. Except the hurricane was closing the distance to me. Was it a nano-cane? I was then locked and webbed. Out came his drones: hobgoblin tech 2 drones. Oh dear, I thought. This would hurt.
"Am on my way!" However, once Ovip's drones were on me, I couldn't get out. My capacitor disappeared and I was helpless. The drones ripped my wolf to fragments. I got the pod out. The engagement lasted all of 15 seconds. Jubes was on the gate and was activating it as my pod flashed out from the belt.
"Get him Jubes. Kill him! IV-3. He should be picking over my wreck now."
"On my way. Guy is dead." Answered Jubes and I full well believe my fellow pirate. As my pod raced back towards Gusandall, Jubes came back to me, his voice thick with disappointment.
"He's gone. He isn't in belt." There was a pause. "He has left local too."

Bah. Down on wolf and no kill either!

Anyway, on a separate note, I was checking my assets and inventory when i realised that I had a hidden room off the bar. I checked it and the sign on it read, 'Trophy Room'. The trophy hall is a dirty little secret of mine. I keep all the bodies of my kills in a cryo-freeze chamber. After a pod kill, my ship automatically scoops the body up into the hold and then freezes it and transport it back to this room. It is entirely automated and to be honest, I don't pay that much attention to it. No idea why I keep them here but it's a shame to dispose of them in space. For one thing, they would be a navigational hazard! There is a pilot who, for a slack handfuls of isk will 'bury' corpses around a system in an small anchored can with a suitable epitah.

Right now, I can't recall this pilots name but he definitely has a website available that one can use to search and index corpses. Nice idea and these corpse, while victims of mine, I will respect and I will see what can be done for them.

Chill brother - we'll kill them Vexors....let us finish our poker game first....

Still nursing a head-ache due to the violent re-cloning last night, I left my plush quarters in the Gusandall station and made my way to a small bar that I own on the seedier Brown-level 27. It is called, 'Independence' - a place where pod pilots and non-eggers can hang out, have a drink, chat to the exotic dancers and leave all the corporation and alliance political bull-shit behind. Besides, the door-men that I employ ensure that order is maintained even amongst the most un-ruly. Un-officially, the Independence bar is nicknamed the 'Podded Pilot' a nod to the unofficial pod kill scores scratched onto the back wall that the resident pirates here keep update with an almost religious fervor.
I greeted some of the residents: Muelac, Viper Sam, Way Charles and RedBad - there were a few others dotted around. Hustled around their drinks. Most of the regulars were in the back corner and there was a poker game being played. The air was thick with smoke and the exhausted extractor fan whirled as it tried to clean up the air.

"Fuck - these cards are shit." Muttered Viper and threw his cards on the table in disgust.
"Deal some better cards will ya WC?" Growled Muelac, not entirely happy himself. I approached and Viper pushed out a chair with his right leg.
"Yo."
"Yo." I replied and a drink appeared on the table as I sat down, from a new bar-maid called Marisa. Pretty little thing too. I settled in and looked at WayCharles. "Deal me in, next round." Redbad scrutinized his cards and threw on some more gold coins, they tinkered as they settled on the ever growing pot.
"10,000" Muelac raised an eyebrow and inhaled on a massive joint, almost as thick as my wrist. "I will see ya 10K." WayCharles also matched the bet with a nervous lick of his lips.
"Call." Hole cards were revealed and it was Redbad who chuckled as his full house, beat Muelac's three of a kind and WayCharles' two-pair. He reached over to claim his pot when there was a commotion and Corlone FinceMoar, a pilot with Hellequin Corporation came over, his excitement clear in the big grin on his face and the energy radiating off him. With almost imperceptible nods, we greeted each other. WayCharles then dealt the hole cards to the players, once the ante was put forward.
"Guys, two vexor-class cruisers in Gusandall! They've been here a while, a source told me that they're running some juicy mission. I have the pilots information too. Nice marks!" He said as he dropped two hard copies of the pilot's bio. Two veteran pilots from the Bayan-Aenedite Exxon Synergies Corporation. Never heard of them.
Corlone FinceMoar licked his lips and looked around at all of us. He frowned as we all intently looked at our two hole cards, Viper sighing loudly. I had an Ace and a King. Not bad and good for the next round.
"Guys? There are two marks in local...." Started Corlone.
"Shhhhh." Said Muelac as his meaty closed over a pile of chips and deposited it into the pot. "We're busy here."
"What?" Spluttered Corlone, quite shocked at the idea of pirates forgoing a kill. "The vexors are running missions in deep space, we need probers. They're veterans so they could be tech-2 fitted." WayCharles dealt out the flop. An ace of spades, three of hearts and a king of diamonds. Nice.
"10,000." Said Viper, quite intent on the game in hand. I raised Viper and was myself raised by Muelac and WayCharles.
"The vexors....." Said Corlone and he gave up and went left the bar. We had no intention of letting kills go but man, this game had to finish. I tapped a short-cut command that got my Wolf-class assault frigate ready. My last one was still scrap somewhere in Gusandall, Yoshi had apologised already and to be honest, it was funny. My re-cloning had got rid of my sprained ankle and I felt great if not a bit fuzzy headed. The game finally finished an hour later and I made ready to leave. I got into the wolf and was soon out into the quiet of space, the afterburner flaring as it nudged the deadly ship towards the belt clusters. A quick scan and it revealed nothing, no vexors but i wasn't too surprised. What we didn't tell Corlone was that Kane Rizzel had managed to smuggle on a positioning unit onto one of the vexors and we knew that both ships were in Auren. It was a neighbouring system. I set course and approached the gate, having requested a jump before arrival, I was instantly sling-shoted into the Auren system. Corlone was there in his crow. He wasn't moving either, a 10km holding position. A quick scan confirmed that the two vexor-class cruisers were in Auren. So what was Corlone doing here? He couldn't tackle on a low-sec gate in his crow-class interceptor?
"Corlone? You there." No reply. I tried again. "Corlone. Corlone. Do you read?"
Nothing. Christ, he hadn't decided to unjack his pod from his ship? He was a sitting duck if he was stupid enough to do this and would deserve his fate if some trigger happy pilot came through.

I moved off the gate and there was a beep from my communication unit, it was my bar back at the station and they informed me that Kane Rizzel had entered the bar. Good timing as always. I quickly opened up channel to him, my avatar appearing in the bar and chatting to Kane directly. He was only in the bar to conclude some business but he convinced himself that the two marks in Auren would be a good way to end his day. It was his work that allowed this to happen. He agreed to join up with me. I also got Muelac to join our gang. It was then that Corlone finally came back online - quite shocked that he and his ship was still in one piece. There was some interface malfunction that rendered him unable to communicate with anyone for over 15 minutes.
"Gentlemen. Situation: Two Vexors in Auren. Pilots: Riskin Mons and Orobas Wats. We have their locations. Get to the Auren gate in Gus and stand-by. Muelac, bring your 'cane."
"Roger."
"I will be bringing mine too." Said Kane as I jumped back into Gusandall and waited. Corlone in his crow then joined me on the gate. Muelac's hurricane loomed up alongside and then Kane appeared.
"Pilots, status please." I said.
"Muelac, cane, on Auren gate. Ready."
"Kane, cane, on Auren gate. Ready."
"Corlone, crow, on Auren gate. Ready."
"Flash, wolf, on Auren gate. Ready." Satisfied, I turned to Kane's avatar. "Kane - activate the homing beacon on the vexor. Give us a warp in spot please."
"Roger that." I checked the weapons and ammunition and made sure that the ammunition hoppers were full of the right types of EMP and Barrage munitions.
"Muelac and Kane, I want you two to get points on Riskin Mons. Me and Corlone will get points on Orobas Wats. Riskin Mons is primary and will get all our DPS. Clear?"
"Roger." Replied Muelac.
"Understood." Said Corlone.
"Clear."And Kane added, "Activate gate and warp to target. Now!" The gate flared as the ships jumped in. I punched the warp engines and my wolf surged ahead. The crow was behind me and one hurricane behind him.
"Shit. Shit." That was Kane cutting through the communications network. "I had my auto-pilot on and I warped to the wrong goddamn gate!" I chuckled, easy mistake I suppose.
"OK Kane, make your way to Auren asap. Muelac and I will point Riskin. Corlone, one point on Orobas Wats. Riskin is still primary. Clear?"
"Roger." Replied the pilots as we raced towards our warp in point. I pinged the scanner ahead and the vexors were dead ahead of us. Kane's hard work in locating the Vexor meant that we landed within 2km of the Vexors. There were no drones out, so we caught them hopping. I locked Riskin and hit the warp disruptor.
"Point on Riskin." I said.
"Point on Riskin." Said Muelac.
"Point on Orobas Wats." Said Corlone. So we had both ships locked tight and our guns spun up and spat out EMP rounds. The Vexor's shield went down very quickly and his armour repairer flashed up, repairing the damage we were causing on the thick hide of his ship. He fired back
with heavy blasters and clamped a nosferatu on me. No matter, minmatar ships can always fire without cap due to our use of auto-canons, weapons that still use a mechanical method of firing. Under our combined fire, Riskin died and he didn't even get a chance to throw out any drones. It looked like both vexor pilots were not communicating and did not concentrate their fire on any one of us. Their split firepower caused us little concern. They should have thrown all their drones at me and then Corlone; while trying to tank the hurricane by moving away from us. Instead they sat there and tried to go toe-to-toe. Once the expanding gas that was Riskin's vexor had dissipated, Orobas was next and he too met the same, fiery demise.

We checked the loot and we were greatly disappointed. Very basic gear and for the age of the pilots, we were greatly surprised. No tech-2 stuff either. Just some named gear and lots of wrecks - that we ended up salvaging for some nice compounds.

It was a slightly disappointing kill, we expected more from Vexors to be honest. However, a kill is a kill.

Satisfied, I returned to the station and went back to the bar. WayCharles was still there dealing himself a hand. Redbad was there also, supping a wierd looking mix of blue and purple liquid. I pulled up a chair.
"Deal me in."

Teamwork FTW!!

I might give up putting myself forward as bait. Twice I have baited for a fleet / gang and twice I got mauled because either the gang wasn't paying attention or they were positioned too many jumps away and thought I was next door.

No matter, I fly only what I can afford to lose but still, I want to be in on the kill.

There was a lot of fun today however, Tsuyoshi Takeru is a new-ish pilot interested in join Black Flag and he has been flying around with us in mixed gangs. A decent thorax pilot and one hopes he moves across into the Hurricane and Claymore class ships. We are sorely in need of more ships like this.

He helped me tackle down a couple of marks in Eifer yesterday and he was around today. Heinz was around today but had to bail. So I was moving around the local systems, chilling out and chatting to other pirates. I was in my slasher - love it 'cause it's fast and nimble. I saw an old foe (almost a friend now) in local, OriasV. He was now in Katugumur and he undocked seconds after I had docked. I sat in the docking bay getting new ammo and then, I too undocked. OriasV was outside in a Jaguar-class assault frigate. He obviously locked me but I was already in warp before he completed his cycle. I made a mental note of this and wanted to come back in a rupture to kill him.

When I docked up in Gusandall, I noticed that OriasV was there in local. I doubt very much he followed me but then again, who knows? I reckoned he was probably going to the angel complex entrance. That complex is like a magnet for many pilots so all things being equal, I reckoned he was en route there. Being a smaller 2/10 class complex, it could not accept a rupture-class ship so I downgraded to a wolf-class assault ship and undocked. Hitting the scanner, I confirmed that the Jaguar was jumping around, maybe ratting but more than likely checking out the local belts for something tasty to snack on. I warped straight to the angel complex entrance and waited.
Tsuyoshi Takeru was still in the station, prepping his thorax-class ship while I knew, just knew that OriasV was now closing in. Maybe he scanned me to the entrance and wanted to kill me or may be not, no matter - I was there waiting for him.

The fight was exciting though I was on the other side of the gate and I bumped into it a few times. He was fast with a fantastic shield tank. It was a very close thing however, I had broken his tank but I had to pulse the afterburner to ensure that I could keep the Jaguar within my optimal. To be honest, OriasV had the upper hand right at the end and had killed me a fraction before he went down.

However, it's what happened after the fight that had everyone else in the Independence channel laughing.....

Feast or Famine

++Feast++

Piracy in New Eden is feast or Famine for many: some weeks there is a bonanza of loot and ransom and then there are weeks and weeks of nothingness. The last few days has been just that. I was idling in the 'Podded Pilot' supping a drink when Jubes paged me, he was outside and hunting and killing and generally making isk from other people's misfortunes. He managed to track and kill a myrmidon outside Gusandall when his mate, 'Gonzattack' appeared in a dominix and engaged. Jubes had to disengage but I undocked and engaged his dominix with my hurricane. I also asked a friends from Omen and Hellequin to assist in his megathron and once Jubes came back, we finally killed it. The kill mail revealed that Gonzattack had strapped four 1600mm plates onto his dominix. Giving it a massive HP buffer. He tried to de-agress and dock up but we killed it. Also, Gonzattack had actually killed me before - when his corp was still with Kraftwerx, they appear to have left this alliance but they are still red to us in Black Flag. Also, the megathron that Arzal piloted reminded me a lot of Rhericlya's megathron, the ship that kicked the crap out of three canes. Read it here.

However, it looked liked we managed to ambush him and kill him. So it took a few of us and we out-ganked him. We're pirates right?

Anyway, back to the Dominix kill and the CONCORD killmail.

++Famine++

The next few hours were then boring, a loose, mixed gang went out hunting in Eifer. We dropped probes and baited and waited but nothing. Nada.

Not even a shuttle or a rookie ship.

Zip.

We traveled along well known lines of communication and nothing. After five hours of searching, we called it quits. A bit disappointed as after the Dominix kill, we were hoping for more. A famine indeed so I docked up and did something else.
++Feast++

Kraftwerx Alliance has been around Eifer and Gusandall for a while and Bad Passion corp (the last Dom kill, now an ex-Kraftwerx corp) are around. Anyway, I found myself drinking in the 'Podded Pilot' and swapping stories with other pirates at the bar. Once again, I was paged by the corp. Our intelligence sources had spotted a Kraftwerx duo coming into Eifer. We intended to welcome them. My hurricane was still in space dock after my last fight. Holes and leaks now had to be looked at. I had to be battle worthy so I picked my trusty rupture, now fitted with T2 weapons and able to pack a punch.

A fleet was scrambled that included Dogz (typhoon), Viper Sam (hurricane), Krypt (hurricane) and myself.

The duo were a drake and a thorax, easy meat but they were hugging a gate into high-sec and well, who knows what was on the otherside? It was Krypt who arrived first and was locked by the drake. Then he was locked by the thorax, I arrived along with Viper and Dogz and we locked and engaged. The fight was over quickly with the Kraftwerx Drake and Thorax being reduced to atomic dust. I even did the most damage on the drake.

Once my flag was gone, I went back to Gusandall to drop off the loot. I undocked and spotted a wolf and rifter and decided to check it out. Using the scanner, it was clear that the wolf and rifter were both in safe spots but no harm in the checking the nearest belt. So I went there and a minute later, a rifter came screaming in. I locked, scrambled, webbed and popped the rifter in a volley and a half. Checking the kill mail and then the local chat, I realised that the rifter pilot was screaming that we were blue. I checked my standings with his Corp (The Metafarmers) and no we were not blue and never have been. The Metafarmers are pirates too and have touted themselves as macro and farmer hunters. Fair enough, I have respect for Stakhanov (metafarmer CEO) and he is blue to me on a personal basis. I always leave them alone if I know they are station camping and blasting farmers to scrap. Hell, I might even join them.
However, anything in a belt gets popped. There were no farmers in the Gusandall belts, only me in the rupture so the Metafarmer rifter was a little bit out of the way and bad luck to him.
Despite this, regrettably I may have created a bit of a diplomatic issue for Viper Sam to sort out. Still, our policy is to keep our blue list as lean as possible.

Pirates! Bah.

My hurricane was finally ready and it came at a good time, as Viper called a fleet together to tackle a rokh and rupture and others he had spotted. The fleet assembled on a gate and we waited for the signal with Dogz powering in to make the tackle in belt 1-1; he reported that he engaged the rokh but that it had left for Emolgranlan. We followed in, now eager for the kill and we all jumped to the gate. The Rokh made the mistake of firing its guns at Dogz and made it impossible for him to activate the jump gate to escape due to the build up of electrical energies on his weapons interfering with the jump gate's systems.

Physics lesson over, we pummeled the rokh and then the rupture into fragments. Adam and Krypt had joined us by now but both were under sentry gun fire though that did not stop them from getting onto the kill.

++Famine++

Then came the famine. With Viper now unavailable, I reformed the fleet and answered WayCharles' call for assistance. Some VETO corp ships were around and he tracked them in his Cerberus but by the time we were ready; the ships were long gone. According to WC, these Veto ships were fast. Probably nano'ed.

The fleet by this time was quite large and we roamed for a couple of hours with little or no action. The closest action was when the fleet was on the other side of a bubbled gate camp; Prediction Pain going in first and picking targets but she was unfortunately taken out. The rest of the fleet, now blind, jumped in but we were rumbled. The camping ships had high-tailed to a POS and sat there. We destroyed the warp bubble anchored near the entry point.

We also entered E0A-ZC but found nothing there just three wrecks of rookie ships. Pickings appearing to be quite slim even for the gate campers?

So we turned the entire fleet around and decided to head to Aedald.

++Feast++

Three jumps to Aedald we caught up with the two VETO corp ships but we could not catch them, after they engaged Dogz we all jumped in but with no rapier in the group; there was no way we could catch them. The VETO guys were nano'ed and ran circles round us and we left them behind us. We can't kill what we can't catch. Where's a rapier when you need one?

The clock was ticking for me and I decided on returning to Gusandall. I made this announcement and Kane Rizzel decided he wanted to join me. So we zipped back - just as the rest of the fleet decided that they too, were going to call it a night and head home.

As I zipped a head, I landed in Aralgrund and did a quick scan. The rest of the fleet was strung out behind me over a four system train. My scan revealed something of interest: two ravens, a rokh and an onyx. The latter was a new ship type; something that I had not seen before and I really wanted a closer look. Maybe our roam tonight could end up with some nice scalps. My scanning told me that the ships were either at the IV cluster, the top three stations or the Roniko belt. I toggled on the fleet chat.
"Gentlemen, I am in Aralgrund. I see two ravens, a rokh and an onyx on scan. Stand by please." There was a chorus of approvals from the fleet and a sincere wish that I could spot them. I needed help though and some bait without tipping off the pilots. I already knew that they were all pilots from SMASH alliance.
"Send Dogz in."
"Roger that. Dogz is en-route. All ships, form up on me on gate." Said Viper, bringing together the fleet and organising them. Dogz jumped into the same system as me in his Typhoon and continued to scan and agreed that the ships were somewhere over in the IV cluster. We both jumped over and continued to scan. I checked the stations while Dogz went over towards the Roniko belt. Due to our positioning, a lot of celestial bodies were in line with each other and we had to work quickly.
I landed on the stations but it was Dogz who was fortunate.
"Contact. Contact. Hostile ravens and friends on Roniko gate. Preparing to engage."
"Roger. Black Flag fleet, this is Flash. Are you all in position?"
"Affirmative. Dogz; give us the word."
"Engaged. Warp to me. Primary is the Rokh." Replied Dogz, his reply stuttering, probably due to the tremendous energies of the weapons' exchanges now being played out around the Roniko gate.
"All ships warp to Dogz. Primary is the Rokh." Said Viper, calm and under control. "All ships load up on EMP based ammo. Those are Caldari based ships and will be shield heavy."
"Roger that Viper. Emp ammo loaded." Hissed Muelac.
"Bring 'em on!" Yelled Krypt.
I warped into Dogz, delayed because I got caught up in the station undock but arriving I saw the four hostile ships being engaged by a fleet of hurricanes.
"Xmay is Primary." I said, identifying the Rokh. It shuddered as the hurricanes and others threw EMP based ammunition at it. Meanwhile, Viper was carefully allocating targets to the other pilots, we all had primaries - ships where we would focus our fire but we also needed to split our warp scramble and disrupt points onto the other ships; ensuring that none escape.
"Muelac and Krypt: points on the 'Nye2K'. Flash and Adam, points on 'The Equinox', Kane and the rest, points on 'Percival79'. Primary is Xmay - I have points on him. Secondary is Nye2K."

Xmay's rokh was atomised with no loss of ships on our side. It went down as the fleet focused it's fire on it. Muelac took some slight damage while Dogz was into 45% armour. We started to repair Dogz as the fire power switched over to Nye2K's raven. The Raven did not last too long either as the EMP ammunition proved to be too much and it too, disappeared in a bright blossom of fire and debris. The killmail revealed that this raven had a cloaking device fitted, but it did not survive the fiery demise of the ship. The second raven, piloted by 'The Equinox' was next.
"Good kill. Primary is The Equinox and secondary is Percival79. Flash, Mue and Kane - points on the raven. Rest get points on the Onyx. Fire at will." Said Viper as we switched our attention the the remaining two ships. Dogz was the enemy's primary target but he had cap booster aplenty and we also managed to remote rep his battleship keeping it in the fight long enough for both the remaining raven and then the onyx to succumb to our fire.

We cheered as the onyx was cut into three pieces by our weapon's fire, the three pieces all spinning off into space. Kane and I even managed to pod the pilot.

The loot was excellent though the killmails revealed that a lot of decent tech 2 gear had been destroyed but that's the way the cookie crumbles, I guess.

At last, the fleet decided to head home and it was only a three jump trip. As Kane and I entered into Gusandall, both ourselves and our crews physically exhausted with the extended foray - our sensors picked up the presence of a known pilot and victim. It was At1as and possibly a friend. I killed his ishkur while he was in the Angel Plex and it appeared he might be there again. I opened up fleet chat to Kane, the only other pilot in Gusandall - the rest of the Black Flag Fleet was strung out one to three jumps behind us.

"Kane. Are you seeing what I am seeing? I think At1as is back and in an enyo. With a friend."
"Confirmed Flash. What do you think?" I knew exactly what that wiley Sebiestor pilot was thinking and my avatar grinned back at Kane.
"Shall we?"
"Hell yes. Am going out in my wolf. Race you to the entrance." Challenged Kane as he and his crew transferred quickly to his waiting assault frigate. I was a touch slow as I needed to load up on ammunition and upon undocking from Gusandall, I realised that I still had some armour damage from some previous engagement. No matter, it would be two enyo-class assault frigates versus a wolf-class and jaguar-class assault frigate. Should be an interesting mix as the Enyo's could be set up for range with tech 2 rail guns. Or indeed, they could be blaster-based Enyo's and the fight will be up close and very nasty.

"Kane: are the marks still in the 'plex?" I asked, anxious that they had not been alerted to our presence.
"Affirmative Flash. Two Enyo's waiting for us. I think they like the 'plex there!"
"Primary will be At1as. Let's kill his ass." I replied, chuckling.
"Roger that. At1as is primary." Once I was at the acceleration gate, I did a final check and activated the gate, a fraction of a second behind Kane. How come he is so much faster? Anyway, no time to ponder as our ships were whipped through into a deep Angel-held complex. The first thing that my scanners picked up were wrecks - so many that it obscured everything on my overview.
Shit I thought, I had not adjusted the overview to show ONLY enemy ships. Vital seconds were lost as I hastily flipped up a new screen. Kane was a lot more professional than me. Lucky for us. "At1as pointed." He said, I locked both Enyo's and decided to add a second point on At1as. He could be stabbed and we did not want our prize to escape. My instincts then took over: locking the second enyo and firing on the primary, adjusting orbit, pulsing the afterburner, maintaining the orbit and keeping the target in my kill zone. Kane's wolf was taking the bulk of the fire and his shields winked off and then he was into armour. The Enyo's were close to us and scoring hits so this meant they were blaster fitted and no doubt tech 2 versions with tech 2 ammo. This would hurt then, though I wasn't too sure if the enyo's had a webber. Doubtful, with only two slots - one would be some afterburner and possibly a scrambler. No, there was no webber here.
"Damnit, those enyo's hurt!" Yelled Kane, I checked the damage readout and he was being pummeled into hull by the enyos.
"Adjust your orbit Kane. They're using blasters with no webber. Move out to 5km orbit. I will move in closer and take the fire."
"Roger - primary is almost down anyway." Indeed, At1as was reading 50% armour damage and it was falling quick - a testament to Kane's immense gunnery skills. I moved close and switched orbits with Kane and since we were both using auto canons, which had far superior fall off, we continued to hit the Enyo. At1as tried to maintain his fire on Kane but now he was presented with a choice: should be continue to hit Kane, now into hull but further away or switch to me, much closer but shield tanked with 85% shield left?
The choice was a horrible one and it was even worse when the second enyo turned and warped out; leaving At1as alone with two blood-thirsty Minnie assault frigates. The enyo tried to stay in the fight but it was blasted to scrap soon enough. We missed the pod though.

The kill mail revealed some goodies on the ship and like before, this chap loves his T2 gear.

4 Jan 2008

Being a patient nub and going after an ishkur.

Sometimes patience pays off, being a nub doesn't help but patience and the ability to learn and have fun helps. I had spottted an ishkur in local and decided to try and hunt it down. The thrill of piracy for me is the ability to move and hunt down a mark as it runs from one system to another. Maybe oblivious to my intentions or completely aware of it and leading me on a merry chase. No matter, so long the mark stays in low-sec and undocked, I have the patience to hunt you down. Now, of course, the use of scan probes may have made it a *little* bit easier to scan mission runners but it takes time and patience and max'ed out skills to do so. Also, a fair amount of missions are completely off plain and impossible to scan out.

So it's back to using the scanner and my brains.

The ishkur pilot was not a rookie and knew what he was doing. He was moving between the belts and picking off choice Angel rats. The wrecks still spluttering and sparking. The ishkur was close. I flipped open the scanner and scanned again; maybe in the complex? I went there, anticipation building. Arriving at the beacon, I activated the gate and it sling shot me through into a deep system. Wrecks bumped off my Wolf-class assault frigate. Checking the wrecks, they bore the energy signatures of the ishkur. He was here and probably passed through into the next level.

I had to wait. Patience. So I sat in the first level of the complex and waited.

Nothing.

The ishkur was still around, so I warped out and sat in the safe. The ishkur hadn't moved but after 15 minutes, it shifted its position. It looked like it was back in the first complex level? Not wanting to miss this opportunity I activated the engines and bolted through the beacon gates. As my warp tunnel evaporated around me, the white square of the ishkur winked on in my overview.

Laughing, I locked him and hit my micro-warp drive to close the distance.

SHIT. My Microwarpdrive? Oh no..... I groaned to myself. I was in a complex and the mwd could not activate. The ishkur had locked me and had sent it's drones onto me and they were busy chewing into my shield. I was too far and the ishkur could control the range. His webber came on as well.

Making a decision to leave, I aligned and warped out, praying that the ishkur pilot had not activated his scrambler or did not have one. There was a pause as my engines fired up and my wolf lurched into space. I was out of the complex and a little bit embarrassed too.

I docked and switched an afterburner in and undocked. Going back to the plex, the ishkur had gone. Bah.

Cursing my own stupidity, I had to make amends. The ship was still on scanner and had not yet docked. So, once more I waited and zipped around the belts and planets hoping the ishkur pilot would make a mistake. After 15 minutes, I docked up. A taranis pilot, a pirate, tried his luck with the ishkur pilot but was beaten off. At least that is what I gathered from the chat in the local communication window. Not too sure if he had lost his ship in the process.

So once more, I was out and the hunt began once more. I was not going to let go and nor was this ishkur going to leave. I scanned and he was around but had moved over towards the V cluster. I jumped to Planet V and scanned. He was not at the belts but had once more, moved. I moved to another scanning point and I had him again. He was back towards the complex. Maybe he gave the complex time to respawn so he could go back in again?

I landed at the familiar beacon and activated it.

The device sling shot me into deep-space and there was the ishkur with a cheetah next to him. What luck! I locked both and scrambled the ishkur. The cheetah warped off. In hindsight, I should have scrambled the cheetah and attacked the ishkur; as the pilot had already proven he was eager fight.

No matter, with an afterburner glowing hotly, I closed the distance and the ishkur's webber came on and my velocity dropped. No matter, my inertia allowed me to drift close enough to my optimal that I could hit it. My x4 ACs spun it and spat out EMP rounds. The ishkur's drones screamed out towards while his neutron blasters tore into my shields.

My shields dropped quickly and I was into armour, with my tech 2 repper coming on. My cap dropped alarmingly fast. I had to maintain fire though. The drones were tech 2 hobgoblins and they tore into my armour blazingly fast. My repper kept up but my cap did not. I switched off the afterburner and had to toggle the disruptor to save more cap. With the disruptor off, there was a chance the ishkur pilot would want to leave....but I doubt it. I was into 75% armour and he was just entering his. He could smell a kill. I could smell defeat.

My cap was empty and my disruptor was in danger of switching off. I took a gamble and switched to hail. It meant ten seconds of limited damage, as only my rocket launcher would be firing but I needed the extra DPS on the ishkur's armour. At least, this ishkur did not have a nos or neut on it.

Some cap recharged and I decided not to switch on the disruptor - most people fighting would either try to leave straight away or leave close to when they're about to pop. Peeps rarely leave the fight when they appear to be winning. My armour dropped to 50% when I pulsed my small repper. A few seconds later I pulled it back to 65%. I switched off the repper. Let's look as if I am in trouble (which I was!). I had to keep him here.

Since he was using cap heavy blasters - the ishkur would be encountering cap problems himself unless it had a cap booster installed; and I knew he didn't. He had me scrambled and webbed and from his velocity, he had an afterburner. That's three medium slot items right there. The ishkur only has three medium slots.

My ACs could fire without any cap. Thank the elders that I could, since with hail and short range, the damage output from me was much more. It started to tear chunks out of the ishkur - and yes, he was repairing it and thus, depleting his cap further. I wasn't idlying but I was keeping my armour around 35-45%. Risky as hell but it was the only way I could preserve my capacitor. Also, my managing my cap and displaying serious armour damage was acting as a 'webber' and scrambler to the ishkur pilot: he was not leaving. He was hooked, even if he didn't know it.

My capacitor creapt back up past 50% as my repper pulsed once more. The ishkur, was only 3KM from me and I was scoring good hits on it. He was trying to kill my armour and his drones were buzz-sawing their way in. My repper was just keeping up. Just.

My velocity suddenly increased. This meant that the webber was off me. Means that the ishkur was now out of capacitor. Probably meant that the scrambler was off me too.

I decided that is was time to kill this ishkur.

I opened up my afterburner to increase my orbitting speed and pounded on him. The hail ripped holes into the ishkur. Yes, it was a drone monster but it could not out damage my wolf now. The ishkur did not last long after his webber turned off and in a glorious flash - was vapourized, I missed the pod though.

The fight felt like hours but in reality it was over in a little over two minutes.

My heart was pounding and his drones were still buzzing round me though they had stopped attacking me as their command link was now broken. I eagerly scooped up the drones into my hold, with the full intention of reprogramming them for my own use.

Moving over to the loot, I sent the salvage bots over to it and I was delighted in recovering a fair number of tech 2 modules. The concord email below showed me that the ishkur was completely T2 fitted and had two rigs as well. The loss to the pilot was in the region of a cool +44million isk.

I recovered the following loot: Small Nosferatu II, Light Neutron Blaster II, Warp Scrambler II, Stasis Webifier II, Damage Control II, Small Armor Repairer II, Reactor Control Unit II,
and nine Hobgoblin II drones. I think the haul came to about 12-14million isk based on local prices. Nice. Nice.

Love piracy.
