Frigate roam and the need for faster points.

Getting back into the saddle is important for all pirates and last night I took out a small frigate gang for a wonder. Pickings were slim that night, with Jmarr snagging a thrasher in his incursus (great kill there mate!) with Persephone in support and us losing Maltrox's rifter to an alpha-striking absolution on a gate.

We did discover a strategic cruiser running a mission and we duly dropped probes for it but the pilot was alert and spotting the probes, exited the mission area and cloaked up. The system he was in had no stations so our conclusions were sound. Not wanting to waste time we moved quickly through - the roam was only going to be for a couple of hours and mid-way through; we had a change in personnel. We lost two and gained through - all pilots slotting into allocated positions smoothly.

A disappointment was not pointing a flashy zealot on a gate. I jumped last, to ensure that we had everyone through and when I got my bearings, there was a flashy (i.e. criminal) zealot. No-one had shouted 'POINT!' and as I ordered some pilots to point it, the zealot accelerated away and warped. We chased after it and lost it. In these circumstances, pilot's initiative should have kicked in and points and webs slapped onto the zealot as soon as we all appeared. Granted am only talking less than seven seconds but instincts should have been sharper if we are to capitalise on these opportunities. So sad panda.

Am running more T1 gangs at the moment to assist the newer pilots into integrating with each other's fleets. I am also using it as an opportunity to evaluate them under moderately high-pressure conditions. We have a three-month probation period after a recruit has been accepted. During these three months they will be accessed by their peers and a decision made on their continued inclusion by a majority vote.

The month of October has seen us hit over 1B isk in ransoms already. This time without the benefit of a single Kronos ransom for 500M isk. Well done chaps, well done. Also, loot sale and split is due to distribution to the interested parties - I have sold about 3.6B isk of loot in the last eight weeks and will be splitting them up between all the pirates. Due to a couple of weeks where I was away from the game, this transaction is now running later than I would like it.

Recruitment is going very well and I have been lax in keeping recruitment statistics up to date on the forum. My recruitment officers have been doing a fine job, I do miss the fun of working with applicants, or rejecting them out of hand (!) and I trust that my guys are doing a fine job. So I just want to thank them. Also, I have not done a pirate speed-linking or participated in a blog banter in a while. CK my friend, I am sorry! However, barring any other international humanitarian disaster - I should be slowly getting back on top of these little, but vital functions.

Finally, I have just got a replacement lachesis. I love this ship, who wouldn't love the ability to point something over 50KM away? Very tempted to get some more faction scramblers and disruptors on this puppy and I would be interested in seeing some ship setups if some of my readers care to share?

80's Movie Roam

Tuesday nights will become Flashfresh's regular roaming gang operation type thing - and I will try and make it a regular event though not every week. As in the tradition of The Bastards, there has to be a theme to bind the pilots together, either some fitting restriction, ship type or some other stipulation.

Last night, it was 80s movies nights in destroyer-class ships or an equivalent. I sent out a call to the corp and allies that they had to have a destroyer class ship, fitted for gank first and foremost with points and for them to pick a signature 80's film of their choice. Some research had to be done to ensure that they have thought long and hard on the choice. It generated a lot of chat and interesting fittings and as the operation kick-off time rolled around, it looked like there would be a fleet of about a dozen ships.

Untypical of a Bastard roam, some of the pilots were assembled around Evati an hour or so before the mission was due to kick off. Happy San spotted a dominix class battle ship nosing around Evati and the proto-fleet went out to give them a typical Evati welcome. Leading the charge in her stealth bomber was Mynxee and the dominix was melted down extremely quickly. Just check out the damage from the stealth bomber. I know that recent upgrades had given this ship class a lift but this is impressive!

So, once 20:30 ticked along, the fleet was ready to go. Destination set, scout roles allocated and order of battle communicated. 'Top Gun' (1986, grossing $350million worldwide), a thrasher class destroyer rolled out of Evati, sporting several 200mm auto canons loaded with EMP ammunition. This was going to be my baby. I was joined by Scrumptious Shae in catalyst named 'Blade Runner' (1982, by Ridley Scott, one of the top 100 films of all time) while Happy San in his crow, called 'The Blues Brothers'(1980, $58million US Gross) raced off ahead as our scout. He didn't have the skills for a destroyer and was a better as our scout. A crow was much more suitable.

We had four thrashers, one catalyst, one wolf, one cheetah, one incursus and one crow. Ok, not a 100% dedicated destroyer gang but close enough.

However, it was Gorgoleon in his cheetah ('First Blood', 1982 with $157million world wide gross) who spotted the first victim of the night. After brushing past a very lack lustre GIS camp in Egmar we proceeded another few jumps. Happy San was locked by a GIS falcon but ignored it and carried forward. Hanging at the back of the main fleet was Jmarr in his incursus.

"Flash, GIS merlin, falcon and brutix are following us. I think."

"Roger that Jmarr, no worries - we have some distance on them and they would be foolish to tangle with us." A thought flashed through my mind. "However, once we're in Klogori - hold gate cloak on the gate please."

There was a ripple of acknowledgements and the fleet jumped into Klogori. If the pilot was sensible, he wouldn't just blind jump after us, especially not in a battle cruiser.

However, common sense doesn't seem to be in supply amongst those space warriors and the Brutix pilot jumped in after us. We knew because we had already made a note of his name and that there was a gate fire behind us. Silly boy.

"OK - this chap is not an outlaw so only war targets need tackle. Only war targets."

Once the gate cloak had vanished, the brutix was sitting there like a big whale, it turned and tried to race back towards the gate - spitting out drones.

"Tackle. Tackle. Tackle!" I said, nudging my thrasher towards the brutix. I was about 32KM away and hit the micro warp drive.

"Point." Said Mynxee, her thrasher was aptly named 'I'mGonnaGetYouSucka' (1988, US Gross $19million) got point as did several others.

"Point." Said an unfamiliar female voice, she didn't sound like Shae or Mynxee. Then there was a huge explosion and I realised that one of two Hellcat applicants had gotten carried away and also initiated hostile actions against the brutix. The sentry guns, detecting an illegal weapons discharge, since these neutrals were not in a sanctioned war, promptly dismantled Amy Fae's thrasher.

However, against the damage dealing fury of this gang, the brutix was peeled apart. Since the fight was against a recognised war target - no-one had a global criminal countdown. We all laughed and prepared to continue moving.

"Grab the loot and let's go!" I said, the fleet whipped around and went to a safe spot. However, GIS rarely travel or fight alone and soon the merlin and the falcon were at the gate; no doubt more were on the way. Some of us went back to joist with them but the merlin and falcon jumped back through and no doubt ran back to Egmar. We had more important things to do. Ten minutes later, 'First Blood' had probed out a hurricane, again in Klogori. We all piled in and killed it with extreme prejudidice. We wanted to ransom the pod but the tackle was missing as the capsuleer expertly whipped his egg out from under our noses.

Waiting out our criminal countdowns, we saw a lot of traffic and most were towards Ardar. Eliviron, the second of the new Hellcat applicants did not have a criminal countdown and was tasked to explore the surrounding systems.

Finding nothing and with our countdowns expired we went to the next system and again, Gorg drew 'first blood' having probed out a drake and myrmidon in safe spot. I tasked Jmarr, Kamoonga and Mynxee to do the deed however while the drake was tackled, the myrmidon bolted. Wishing for a quicker kill, I ordered the rest of the fleet to jump in after the tacklers and as we landed - the myrmidon returned. No doubt shamed into flying back to rescue his friend.

"Primary is the drake. Secondary are the myrmdion's drones. Confirm your points please." I said.

"Point on drake." Replied Jmarr.

"Point on myrmidon." Said Happy. Other pirates confirmed webs and target painters.

"Target and pop the myrmidon's drones. Keep the myrmidon pointed but knock his drones out."

The myrmidon was promptly pointed and webbed while we went to work on the drake. The drake was popped but not before it managed to snag and destroy 'Blade Runner' with a well-aimed salvo. We took swift and brutal revenge and managed to snag the pod. We were going to have fun with it later. Our attention switched to the Myrmidon and we pounded the hell out of it. Fenneck was smart and targetted the drones throughout the engagement, forcing the myrm pilot to scoop his drones on a regular basis in order to save them.

The space between our ships was thick with auto canon projectiles, missiles and drones zipping between the antagonists. As the myrmidon went into structure, I wanted to grab this pod along with the drake pilot's pod we had earlier. I had no idea what I was going to do, ransoms were so routine.

"Tacklers, take points off the myrmidon, get the pod." There was a flash and my thrasher was showered by gallente battle cruiser debris. The pod zipped away amidst a lot of cursing but at least we had the other one.

"Sorry boss, I lost the first pod, I moved too far away and lost point...." Cursing at the loss of both pods, I decided we had to move on. No matter, loot was scooped and we went to a safe spot to cool things off. We also examined the kill mails and discussed the ship setups. Pushing further south we ended up in Frerstorn and tackled an Armageddon - what a treat! However, local then shot up by dozens and the order was given to bail out. It looked like a blob was pushing their way through here - possibly called in to combat us or maybe not. We couldn't take the risk. Gorg, all cloaked up and sneaky reported back that there were at least four battle, ships, seven cruisers, nine frigates, a couple of interceptors and some battle cruisers all close by. The 'geddon may or may not have been bait. We couldn't take the risk.

Of course, even if we were doing nothing, something always happens and there was a smaller fleet who were also present in the same system who initiated chat with us - blaring out greetings in local. It turns out that they were readers of our various blogs (this one, Shae's and Mynxee to name three) and we exchanged pleasantries. Of course, this would also mean that it would be doubly more fun to kill them and therefore give them a mention.

Oh we got some love in Local while roaming last night. It was highly amusing and I would like to give a shout out to: Griznatle, Jyren's Rage, Vhis Iridion, kapu4u. Some memorable lines of chat include:

z0de > I've touched Shae in rl, who wants to lick my hand?
Griznatle > Me! and lines up
flashfresh > I've done more than lick her HAND
Mynxee > ROFL
z0de > lol
Griznatle > FLASH!
Griznatle > JEBUS
Griznatle > OMG
Shae Tiann > hehe it's true.....

This group soon left, passing through Ardar and once our GCCs were up - we went this way too; with our scout and covert ops moving ahead. The presence of a vengance assault frigate, a rupture class cruiser and a golden hued 'geddon was observed and Happy tried to lure them off the station towards a planet. He danced and wiggled to entice but nothing, yet. Gorg was also there and relaying more information. Just as we decided enough was enough and that our beds were beckoning, Happy reported back that we he may have been finally successful in his bait antics and in this case, kapu4u and Jyren's Rage were coming. Two of the four chaps we had chatted to earlier.

"Vengance just landed about 45km from me. Burning towards him."

No one spoke, we just waited at the safe in the next system.

"Jmarr and Kamoonga. Warp to the Ardar gate but do not jump." Two ships peeled off from the fleet and warped to the gate.

"I am closing.....thirty kilometres, twenty-nine, twenty-eight.." Counted down Happy. A few seconds ticked by.

"Point. Point!"

"Jmarr and Kamoonga. Jump and warp to Happy. Rest of fleet, warp to Ardar gate and hold." The rest of the fleet, already aligned, jumped towards the gate, the ships almost straining to get involved in the kill.

"This is Gorg. Hostile Rupture inbound. Hostile Myrmidon inbound." The trap was sprung.

"Kamoonga, this is Flash, call primaries please."

"Roger. Primary is vengance, secondary the rupture."Jmarr bravely tackled the rupture on his own, amid a swarm of drones. We jumped in after Kamoonga and Jmarr and the main fleet dropped out of warp into the middle of the fire fight. We sincerely hoped that the 'geddon would also come in but it didn't. Still, the fight was brief and brutal with no losses on our side and with a decent haul in loot. The distinctive thick, red curling stream of energy neutralisers snaked out from the dying myrmidon but none of this could save him.

Would've been supremely funny to have gotten Griznatle but his group moved on apparently.

The operation was approaching the end and I decided to call an end.

"All ships, head back home at your own speed. Gorg and Happy are ahead of us and the path is clear."

With the acknowledgments ringing in my ears, the fleet broke up and made their own way home. Leaving myself and Kamoonga to pick up the loot. As the first elements of the fleet entered Evati, they managed to tackle a harbinger and then a cyclone. However, our strength is due to our size and numbers: going into a belt in dribs and drabs would kill us. The lure of an extra kill or two just to end the evening was too tempting for most of us and we engaged the harbinger and cyclone. I stupidly lost the thrasher (with some of the evening's loot) but we succeeded in killing the pair AND recovering the lost loot.

The pair were determined to have their revenge and they returned in battle ships that killed our battle cruisers but then we were hot dropped by a couple of carriers. Not what we had expected and we had to scatter; the abbadon we had targetted would have gone down eventually to our battle cruisers but not quick enough.

A disappointing ending for me, when the evening was such fun.

Enemy frigates outside our door!

"We have lots of war targets outside." Informed Shae in her cloaked and hidden position above our station. After over a month of official war with GIS and their friends, where we have been successfully attacking their more expensive ships in our much cheaper T1 frigates, the enemy came back to visit us last night in similar T1 frigates. No doubt to entice us to fight and to cut down their losses. Their killboard efficiency isn't too good at the moment.

"Can you ID the ships Shae?" I asked as I quickly scrolled through the available pilots list.

"Er, incursus, incursus, rifter and griff. There's more in local than there are ships."

"So expect some cloakies, probably falcons." I observed. GIS are well known for their love of ECM. A valid tactic by the way and something we need to work on.

"Yup."

"Shouldn't matter; all pilots 'x' up to kick GIS and their frigates." The corporation communication channel, always populated and busy flashed several times and we had a small fleet of eight pilots.

We undocked and then we danced with the GIS frigates who didn't immediately engage us but tried to dock. On several occasions, buzzing us and taunting us with their close fly-bys and then docking up. It could not continue and we eventually popped three of their frigates. Through a combination of poor tactics and sloppiness on their part and good placement of ships by us. This is where the war declaration has helped us as we could engage these chaps without any interference from station guns and CONCORD.

Long live bribery!

We've learnt some more and will adjust our tactics and ships accordingly.

I lost my rifter due to a moment of absent mindedness where I locked and fired on a neutral. The gate guns, detecting an illegal weapon's discharge, dismembered my rifter in very short order. Obviously, we didn't bribe enough people!

During all this, and since we were pirates, we still managed to probe down and tackle a drake. Forcing the pilot to eject from his ship was a bonus but the pilot wasn't in a talkative mood when we offered to sell back his rigged ship.

Finally, the frigate/destroyer fleet - restless for more booty went off on a roam towards Metropolis / Heimater. We managed to ransom a rifter and killed an arbitrator and a falcon. The arbitrator pilot was very unhappy with us as we tried to first ransom his cruiser and then when his ship popped, we tackled his pod. He wasn't too happy with us.

Cooch took over the fleet as I had to dock up - there was a very odd bug where my global criminal countdown kept on resetting back to 15 minutes every five minutes. This went on for over forty minutes! Very odd and quite disturbing. The arbitrator pilot, just before he popped, threatened that his friends would find me and deal with me. Maybe this was what he had in mind?

Crime does pay
Finally crime does pay as the list below shows you the pay-out from yet another batch of loot that we have sold.

Total sales were around 1.7 billion isk and there's another load of gear being repaired, repackaged and loaded up.

One of the strengths of our pirate corp is the equitable split in all loot collected. We've developed an application that takes all kills and loot and hyperlinks them to each pilot involved, the killboard and the item values from EVE-Central. In one place, everyone can see the value of the loot drop per kill, the pilots involved as well as total value.

A very slick, almost automated loot management and isk distributing system, developed by pirates for pirates. Something that we, The Bastards are very proud of. Here's an example from the application.

The Recruitment -'Recruitment for The Bastards is now closed'.
New recruits are fitting in quite nicely but we still have a number in the queue being evaluated - it's a long process and unfortunately, mistakes during the evaluation period might result in the application being rejected. It's a bit harsh but we can't afford for someone to be a paper weight.

An update - some losses and some kills.....

The valentine's day hunt was a lot of fun and I am looking forward to more challenges. The usual noobs keep the guns warmed up nicely and the killmail inbox nice and full. However, I have been hunting further afield for more marks. Still haven't quite given up on the punisher - it can certainly tank better than the rifter but does not do as much damage per second. Basically, if I can alpha strike someone then rifter is ideal but against a cruiser or something; the punisher is probably the better choice.

I pushed the punisher towards Metropolis once more and this time solo - LC was away in 0.0 so flying on my own once more; need to pick my targets more carefully. I headed back almost to my old stomping grounds in Auga but stopped short by one system at Dal. It had only three belts and all were off the scanner - so it was deep inside the system and away from the gates. I could see three pilots in local so decided to chance it.

Approaching the belt systems I activated the scanner and found a coercer there. An Amarr destroyer. Never took one of these on so decided, what the hell. I tried to narrow him down and managed to pin the Amarr ship into a belt. I then warped in. I knew even before arriving that he was there as the signs were all there: the slightly slower loading time and the feeling you have inside your stomach.

Popping out of warp I saw Aardwolfe and immediately locked him. I scrambled him and hit the orbit at 2000m with the x3 200mm autocannons spitting fury and fire. This coercer's shields were poor and were soon stripped. I got him down to hull very quickly and was preparing to snag his pod when two other pirates appeared in local. They were from the Shi Yah Tong corporation and I smelt trouble. One of the pirates soon warped in on me as I was taking down the coercer to 10% hull. His pod popped out just as the new pirate started to target me. I knew his mate would soon warp in afterwards so I hit the warp drive and jumped out.

Next thing I knew, I saw the pirate type in local:

"2 million for you pod Aardwolfe!"

Cheaky git had stolen my pod ransom!

Shrugging, I prepared to leave the system - the pirate's mate was in a hurricane so I had made the right decision.

Aarwolfe was podded as he refused to reply to the ransom.

Anyway, I went back to Auga and the surroundings but the place was flat. Eggehelende was more fun and I played cat and mouse with a few would be pirates and pirate hunters but nothing significant and no kills. Much to my disappointment.

I decided to log and come back another day.

A few days later, with some new skills in my head; I made my way back towards Gusandall. LC was online and was recounting the BoB kills that the anti-BoB front were making. It sounded all quite exciting.

However, I wanted to kill something and in Arnstur I spied a ferox. Normally too big for me and with a six month pilot; it looked dicey but I went for it anyway. I found him ratting in a belt and landed about 3.5KM away - on came the scrambler and I pushed the punisher into a tight orbit. I made hardly a dent in his armour.

I was also scrambled too so had to fight my way out. Nope. His shields rarely went down below 75% while he gradually killed me with his drones and missiles. I should have moved further away from the ferox, drawn off the drones and killed the drones. However, my cap was running low too.

It was an ambitious attack but fun. I learnt some useful lessons.

Well that was the last of the punishers in my hangar. No more left unless I get another delivery. I am getting better at knowing how this ship works and to be honest, I should have killed his drones asap.

Back into the rifter we go and into everyone's favourite hunting grounds: Eifer.

Yes, yes - the rat got the ship kill mail though I did 99% of the damage!! Grrrrrr.

I sat at the SS and waited for the timer to run out. I did spot a few more likey targets and went for them - I actually had one in my sights but then Redblack Frietas uncloaked his force recon cruiser; much to my dismay, and I got out there asap. Redblack failed to get the rifter I was chasing too.

Anyway, once the flag was gone I came back into Gusandall. I saw a thrasher and thought...why not. I jumped into a belt but it was empty - was sure she was here. She was - and jumped in after me. I locked and scrambled here and took her shields down v quickly but this thrasher managed to get a few good hits in and repped some of her damage. I was now running low on cap and soon was out....just as me and the thrasher were into 25% hull. My webber turned off as did the afterburner. I kept on firing as did she and for a moment, the screen froze - I thought I had the killing blow but alas, it was me - her howitzer got in a good hit that pulverised my hull. With no cap to run the repper: i was dead.
Damn.

She was down to about 10% hull too! I warped out just as an EOS and Brutix came into local. I safespotted and waited. Cursing my bad luck and bad judgement. Should have turned off the disruptor once I knew the thrasher was going to fight back. That would have saved my cap and maybe given me an extra rep cycle....which is all I needed. Have learnt.

Got a thrasher but forgot my SAR!

Still smarting from the recent losses I wanted to kill someone, anyone. Eifer was always a fun place to go to and I zipped in there. A quick scan of local revealed a number of pilots but nothing on the scanner.

Jumping to the other side fo the Eifer system and the scanner sprang to life. There were thrashers, rifters and a myrmidon.

Decided a thrasher would be a good way to jump back into the swing of things and proceeded to hunt it down. A tricky one this, Mirakuglix, while new was jumping around all over the place. I finally tracked her down after three minutes of hunting and scrambled her. For a moment - when the target was locked I thought that I had a 7.5KM fitted.

The webber came on at 10KM and I put in a tight orbit as my 150mm ACs started their 'speech of hate'.

The thrasher retargetted me but I was delighted to see that this was, once again, horribly fitted with only the missile launcher causing any problems. It had howitzers on.

The ship tried to escape but the scrambler and webber held it firm.

It died.
